First off, if you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, no need to ask. I take it the industry’s booming again, looking at the number of ads in today’s paper.

Visit www.shell.com/careers and select Job Search & Apply → Job Search for Professionals → Region → Asia → Malaysia. The ad asks you to quote reference DVT035C, but you know you should quote ‘razmahwata.wordpress.com’.

Going back to the basics of chemical engineering, here are some texts I referred to, in an attempt to grasp the fundamentals of chem eng back in my Part I and Part II days. Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering, An Introduction to Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer: With Applications in Chemical and Mechanical Process Engineering (out of print, written by one of my lecturers). Introductory texts to Gas Processing would be John M Campbell’s Gas Conditioning and Processing V. 1: The Basic Principles, Gas Conditioning and Processing V. 2: The Equipment Modules, which you get if you attend the course.

- No jobs of note were advertised last Saturday. Only job worth applying for is as admin staff at Synergy. We are also looking for someone with the ability and personality to fill up the position as a permanent member of the family.

Reflecting the quality and number of interview sessions last week, my recommendation for this week is Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook, Eighth Edition (Chemical Engineers Handbook). I don’t really mind if you buy it from Universiti Malaya (y’know, the uni I couldn’t get in ’cause my grades weren’t good enough) Pekanbuku.

fodder.
- Synergy is looking for lead safety engineers, safety specialists, junior and lead process engineers and technical writers. We’re on an expansion drive, people! Visit the Synergy website for contact details. For leads, you need 5 years plus experience in the oil & gas industry. For safety specialist applicants, you need to be well versed in HAZOP, HAZID, QRA, FERA and Formal Safety Assessment. Ah, heck. If you have more than 5 years experience in O&G, apply. If you have less than 5, send a donation to the offshore account, and still get abuse. For juniors, go pick up a copy of Cambridge’s ChemEng syallabus, and go study like the Tripods (all of them) are tomorrow.
- RasGas is looking for Field Operators, Operation Maintainer, Technician, Shift Process Operators. CVs to be submitted here. You can phone the local recruiters at +603 2078 1918. I believe RasGas is a JV, one of the partners being ExxonMobil.
No food recommendations this week, as I haven’t gone anywhere new. I really need to buck up on doing marketing rounds.
If you’re looking for a book recommendation, I heartily recommend Daemon
. It’s an exciting introduction to the way the new techno-thriller genre is going. Well, not new, everyone’s heard of William Gibson and Neuromancer
, but think of this as moving techno-thrillers from military and spycraft to the ‘Net, IP addresses and MMORPG. I can’t wait for the second part of the duology
to come out.

As you can probably tell, I was on leave last week. Food was catered for at Ayu Mayang Resort, Redang, Terengganu. How was the weather out there? Put it this way, no swimming was allowed, no boats could beach outside the big ferry jetty, and people were surfing outside the resort. Yes, it was kinda rough, people, though I still managed to get 2 dives in, bordering on suicidal.

In our continuing saga to improve the skills and products available to our clients, I was sent to attend a training course entitled ‘TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Program – Yokogawa course provider for the Safety Training’, from 26th – 29th January, 2010. The course climaxes with a 4 hour exam, upon which a pass mark (> 75%) enables me to call myself a ‘TÜV FS Engineer’. Needless to say, I walked out of the exam at about the 1 1/2 hour mark, reckoning that staring at the paper for another 3 hours won’t improve matters much.

- I see PETRONAS has a walk-in interview session on the 23 & 24 January 2010 at the KL Convention Centre (remind me not to go to in that weekend). They have postions for executives/ engineers/ technical coaches & technical professionals. You need at least a BEng and 8 (eight) years related experience. Don’t come crying to me if they reject you because you only have 5 years. Hah, they want you to bring their latest resume (no CVs), to passport photos, NRIC, academic qualifications and last 3 pay slips (of course, everyone will bring in ‘adjusted’ slips if they had any sense).
- Muhibbah Petrochemical Engineering is looking for senior QA / QC, project planning and control engineer. You can send your resume in here.
- Turboservices is looking for a opns & maint technician. Send email here.
- Petrosains is looking for people as well, I guess.
No food recommendations this week. I’ll be in Kerteh InshaAllah this Wed, so I guess it’s Sundram banana leaf rice for lunch. Sigh, how I miss Pak Ali’s nasi biryani…
