Associations engage Petronas to safeguard industry’s future

June 12, 2020

And the didn’t invite MOGEC. Where art thou?

Dateline 2020-05-21, NST:

Three associations representing the interests of the Malaysian oil and gas industry recently revealed they had engaged with Petronas to mitigate and address the current dire situation and circumstances affecting the industry.

Brought about by an unprecedented downturn due to the geopolitics of big oil producing countries, which has been amplified by the threat and spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the associations — The Malaysian Oil & Gas Services Council (MOGSC), Malaysia Offshore Support Vessels (OSV) Owners’ Association (MOSVA), and the Malaysian Offshore Contractors Association (MOCA) — had a video conference meeting with the top leadership of Petronas last month.

During the meeting, the three associations representing over 500 companies and a workforce of 60,000, shared with Petronas the state of the industry and the challenges the companies were facing.

IEM Shout Out – 2019-01 Technical Visit to Pengerang

December 31, 2018

My technical division will be hosting a visit on the 28th January, 2019. Aaand, it’s with MOGEC, y’all all.

IC is PETRONAS’ largest investment in Malaysia, located in Pengerang, Johor and forming part of Johor state’s ambitious Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (PIPC). The PIC project is designed to produce premium differentiated petrochemicals; meeting domestic demand for petroleum products and the Malaysian government’s future legislative requirements on the implementation of Euro 5. With an investment of USD27 billion, PIC supports the Government’s overall Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and will position Malaysia to capitalize on the growing need for energy and commodity petrochemical products in Asia in the next 20 years.  This will spur the growth of Malaysia’s Oil and Gas downstream sector pushing Malaysia into a new frontier of technology and economic development.

Shout Out – HAZOP Training 2016/08

July 19, 2016

My organization (not IEM this time) has a course on HAZOP on the 16th August, 2016. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at (wait for it) Hilton PJ. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates. And it’s a big room, so I need to fill the seats.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:

  • Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
  • Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
  • Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
  • Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
  • Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
  • Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
  • Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

Wata has 19 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, in both design and operations.
