Saturday Star 2008-10-18 – Job Opportunities

Another week, another scan of the Saturday Star newspaper. Here’s a list of job ads in the paper:

  • PETRONAS (all capitals, please) is recruiting. The online ad version of The Star isn’t clear, but I think there’s an Open Day from the 24th-26th Oct, 2008 at the JW Marriot, KL. I wonder why they didn’t do it next door at the Mandarin. Too expensive? Anyhow, they are looking for people with at least 7 years experience, which leads on the the next ad.
  • Synergy Oil and Gas Engineering is recruiting fresh chemical engineering graduates, or those with around 1 year experience. CVs may be sent to enquiry@synergykl.com.my.
  • The Kuwait Oil Company is looking people. You can visit the job website and send your application here and here. The engineering positions they offer are for process, reservoir, petroleum, drilling, planning, cotnracts, maintenance, material, cost estimation, safety and enviromental. In a nutshell, ask and you will find an opening.
  • QP is looking for a lot of people. You can visit the QP website. Did I tell you that QP’s SWB (salary, wages, benefits) package is something to be sneezed at?

  • RasGas is looking for a rotating eqt and mechanical integrity specialist. . Snr Integrity, Snr Mech, Snr Programmatic, Snr Elect/Power, Measurement Specialist (Way hay!), Snr Rot Eqt, Snr. I&Control, Analyser Eng Specialist. CVs to be submitted here. I believe RasGas is a JV, one of the partners being ExxonMobil.

Petrol Prices Drop in Malaysia

Petrol Price Down 15 Sen A Litre Wednesday, Says Abdullah

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) — The RON97 petrol price has been lowered by 15 sen to RM2.30 a litre, RON92 less 10 sen to RM2.20 and diesel sheds 20 sen to RM2.20 from tomorrow, announced Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The downward revision followed marked drop in world oil prices of late, the prime minister said in a statement Tuesday.

Crude oil prices have dwindled from a record high of US$147 per barrel in July to US$82 currently.

Abdullah said the government decided to expedite reduction of petrol and diesel retail prices to enable the people to enjoy lower fuel prices immediately.

This is the third time the government had lowered petrol and diesel prices, with the earlier adjustment being on Aug 23 and Sept 24.

The government had on June 4 announced petrol price hike by 78 sen, up 41 percent, to RM2.70 from RM1.92 a litre following spiralling world crude oil prices

Good Safety Engineering

Us in the oil and gas industry always say that safety is paramount. We have catchphrases to impress this into the work culture:

  • ‘No one gets hurts’
  • ‘Nothing is so important that it cannot be done safely.’

Engineers work hard to ensure that there are design safeguards in place:

  • Perform specific reviews to identify and minimise safety hazards (HAZOP, HAZID, QRA)
  • Hire a safety engineer to champion safety causes.
  • Physically restrict flows such that downstream systems cannot be overpressurized (restriction orifices)

If a risk can’t be eliminated by design, then procedures are put in place and enforced to reduce the risk to the people and assets:

  • Work Permit Systems.
  • Safety Training.
  • Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO).

The photo below shows a design feature I like that has been incorporated into a water cooler. Note the knob on the hot water dispenser button. The knob has to be rotated before you can press the button. This reduces the risk that a child could scald themselves if they get it in their minds to experiment with the unit.

Why not put the knob on all the buttons, you may ask? Well, that is the realm of risk analysis, and cost-benefit studies. The convenience of dispensing tepid or cold water outweighs the risk of a messy puddle cause by a young experimentalist.

Another thing this brings to mind is an analysis of applicable features. Would you require this (presumably more expensive) feature if the water dispenser is in an office environment?

Oh, if you decide to buy the above brand, please give me a cut 🙂

Engineering Forums – What you do you use?

I was curious as to what online engineering forums Malaysian engineers use to seek information. Okay, I am assuming you have Internet access in your office. First off, I hope that you use my blog and topics to start discussion threads (and maybe I make a buck or two if you find useful stuff).

Oil and Gas: Taking a Toll on America’s Workers?

Here’s a link to the Driller’s article, ‘In the oil patch, a rising death rate’?

I wonder what the death rate is around here in Malaysia? Deaths that I do know about are:

  • Chopper accident of the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the pilot was killed.
  • Explosive decompression of a fuel gas filter separator in the South China Sea, an operator was killed.
  • Second hand information: a drilling rig operator was killed in the midst of operations.

These events can still happen even with the best of intentions, and with our mindset of ‘safety first, above all’. Maybe you should hang around with old timers, and they can tell you of stories offshore. We don’t have the events at the scale of Piper Alpha, but the danger is always there.
