PETRONAS Drilling Crew Withdrawing From Ogaden

July 23, 2010

For those who wanted to make more money in PETRONAS by being posted to places where you have a bulleye stiched onto you shocking red coveralls, the world has become a smaller place.

Dateline 2010-07-10:

The Malaysian oil company, Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), which is prospecting for oil and gas reserves in the Ogaden basin, south eastern part of Ethiopia, is demobilizing its drilling crew, according to Ethiopian Reporter.

There is speculation that the company will pull out from Ethiopia. Previously, Petronas relinquished its concession in the Gambella basin, south-western part of Ethiopia, near the Sudanese border, after drilling two exploration wells that turned out dry. Another exploration well drilled by the company last year in the Ogaden basin in the Genale locality also turned out to be dry.

IEM Shout Out – Technical Safety Studies in O&G

July 21, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a talk on the 31st July, 2010. It’ll be at 9:30 am (makan-makan at 9:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

One key element of an offshore oil & gas field development project is to demonstrate inherently safe design principles are adopted as part of the engineer design. A safety case lifecycle approach would ensure that the potential Major Accident Events (MAE) are identified, assessed and managed through the design process in order to demonstrate that risks have been reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and within the required tolerable limits.

(The Speaker) Ms Voon Jye Yng graduated from University of Kansas, USA in 1995 with a degree in Chem Eng (Environmental). Ms Voon is the Partner for Technical Risk and Safety Engineering with Environmental Resources Management (ERM).

Get the form here.  Flyers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.

IEM Shout Out – Value Based Maintenance

July 20, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a course on the 3rd and 4th August, 2010. For a change, it will be held at Auditorium Tan Sri Prof. Chin Fung Kee, Wisma IEM, Petaling Jaya.  The course is worth 13 CPD or PDP points.

Support me by purchasing my recommendations, or buying through my Amazon store.

First off, if you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, no need to ask.

  • Corro Shield, who is hosting a visit by the IEM on 5th August, 2010 is looking for a reservoir engineer / production technologist, blaster / painter, scaffolding inspector /scaffolder. Contact them here.
  • ExxonMobil is looking for a petrophysicist. They are accepting people with an Engineering degree, so that’s why this position is in the list.
  • Murphy is looking for a drilling fluid coordinator. Can someone tell me how do you coordinate drilling fluids? Do you stand in front of the barrels and shout “Fluids, leeeeeeft face!”?  Send your applications here.
  • Talisman is looking a Snr Drilling Engineer and Senior Production Technologist. Apply here, and visit their site.
  • Technip wants to has another advert in the paper. I guess there are too many positions to name, as the positions are now listed as Engineering, Accounts & Finance, Human Resources and Secretary (I very much doubt it comes with the prefix “Company”). Visit here soon.
  • Halliburton is looking for Reliability Engineers. Write in and send their details here.

I recently discovered tha Kinokunya KLCC has a whole rack dedicated to oil & gas topics. ‘Course, I would prefer if you bought the above selection from my site, but I value your continued education more than profit. Actually, I prefer it the other way round, so purchase stuff from me.

This selection focuses on the non-engineers among you. Try out Oil & Gas Production in Nontechnical Language, The Petroleum Industry: A Nontechnical Guide, and Petroleum Refining in Nontechnical Language, Fourth Edition. I haven’t used these books before, but they seem quite good.

View from Hess

Here’s a view from the food court which is at the same level as Hess’ offices in Menara Tan & Tan (8th floorish). I think there’s a putting green just outside the camera frame…

From Bernama – PETRONAS Identifies Source Of Oil Sheen (Newfield)

July 16, 2010

Looks like Newfield is in the news … not in a good way.

From Bernama, dateline 2010-07-10:

PETRONAS has identified a damage point on a production pipeline operated by Newfield Peninsula Malaysia Inc, as the source of the oil sheen, sighted near offshore platforms off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

“Subsea investigations detected early this morning, one damage point on a production pipeline operated by Newfield Peninsula Malaysia Inc,” it said in a statement.

“Initial visual inspection results indicate the pipeline had been damaged by activities of an unidentified marine vessel unrelated to Newfield’s operations.

“Repair work on the affected pipeline is in progress,” it added.

Yesterday, Petronas took emergency measures to shut down production pipelines at the 240km offshore platforms, after a thin layer of oil sheen was sighted.

This paper will show that the Multiphase Boosting and Metering Systems facilitate a new but proven approach for development and exploration of typical fields, albeit onshore, offshore or subsea, and look into the technical aspects related to the implementation and operation of Multiphase Pumps, Multiphase Compressors as well as Multiphase Flowmeters (Vx technology).

The Speaker, Mr. Mads Hjelmeland currently holds the position of Area Sales Manager for Pumps and Subsea Systems with Framo Engineering Asia Pacific.

OGFJ – Malaysia goes deeper and further afield

July 12, 2010

Here’s an article from the Oil & Gas Financial Journal. I was one of the hundreds interviewed, but I guess I’m Too Sexy for this Sheet:

When Malaysia´s Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak unveiled its highly anticipated New Economic Model (NEM) in March 2010, he re-emphasized the importance of the oil & gas industry for Malaysia. “In oil and gas, we have one of our nation’s most visible and valued champions in PETRONAS. It has built a strong brand internationally, and I believe now we must also help drive growth here in Malaysia with even greater support for local suppliers as it grows. Beyond the core oil and gas sector, however, Malaysia’s international energy expertise can help companies in this industry and beyond expand internationally by sharing its know-how, partnering on international bids and offering support on a truly global scale. The strength of having a well-developed pool of local talent and companies which are able to compete globally gives us a lead advantage.”
