Pahang, an oil producing state?

October 9, 2012

Dateline 2012-09-17:

Recently it was announced that the Umno-led government would form a special commission to review oil royaties to the east coast states.

Two issues struck me – the Terengganu ‘sham’, and two, how did Pahang end up as an oil state?

Terengganu has received its payment on the quiet side. The money is vested in the hands of the local kingpin and Terengganu Menteri Besar, Ahmad Said.

So the inclusion of Terengganu is just window dressing, a ‘sham’.

When Idris Jusoh was MB, the federal government insulted the Terengganu people imputing they don’t know how to manage the oil money by allowing ‘Patrick Lim’ to decide where the money should be applied.

Pengerang rides on oil and gas boom

October 7, 2012

Dateline 2012-09-16:

PENGERANG, once a sleepy corner of Johor, is fast turning into a boom town for petroleum investors as the government steps up efforts to turn Malaysia into a regional oil and gas hub, rivalling Singapore.

Located south of Desaru, on the southeastern tip of Johor facing Singapore, Pengerang became the British army’s “Waterloo” in 1936 when they paid the price for underestimating their biggest nemesis then — the Japanese army.

The Japanese captured Malaya without firing a single shot from the Pengerang battery (a fort where weapons such as guns and cannon were stationed) when they surprised the British by landing in Kota Baru instead of Singapore. (The battery was part of the “Singapore fortress”, aimed at defending Singapore from a sea attack.)

Pertamina wants higher natural gas price from Petronas

October 2, 2012

Dateline 2012-09-15:

Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) says it is in talks with Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional (Petronas) and Petro Vietnam Exploration and Production (PVEP) to raise the price of natural gas from its oil and gas block in Malaysia.

PHE, a subsidiary of state-run oil and gas firm PT Pertamina, started the talks after it realized its concession for the SK-305 block also contained natural gas that it could not sell at what it thought was a good price.

PHE president director Salis S. Aprilian said on Thursday that Pertamina and PVEP agreed to negotiate a gas price that was more economic and competitive.

Y’know, a while back they actually included how much tax was waived. I think the amount is the same as or more than the subside.

Maybe the powers that be decided that showing that information is an oops? Get the relevant act here.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Green Energy Potential in the Palm Oil Industry

September 29, 2012

This is a shout out for the IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division (know as CETD to friends) will be having a talk on Saturday, 6th October, 2011.

The Palm Oil industry in Malaysia had attracted much negative publicity mostly from European NGOs on the issue of sustainability. As part of the measure to mitigate this issue, the Malaysian Government is encouraging the Palm Oil industry to reduce its carbon footprint.

Therefore all Mills in Malaysia are encouraged to convert the palm oil mill effluent into biogas by 2020. Conventional biogas technology had been around for more than 20 years but with the world’s energy prices going higher and with the Malaysian Government’s Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) program, there is a need to develop higher efficiency Biogas system.

Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors is a fairly new development around the world and recently these anaerobic membrane bioreactors (An-MBR) had been used for the first time in the world for treating palm oil wastewater. As a result, more difficult processes such as thermophilic digestion with An-MBR system can become a reality and it had resulted in superior biogas yield. Through the latest technology, the green energy from the Mill can be harvested and potentially converted into other form of fuel.

As for the speaker:

Mr. B. P. Chow is a Chemical Engineering graduate from the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) as well as a Chartered Engineer. Presently he is the Deputy Chairman of IChemE Malaysia and the Managing Director of Aquakimia Sdn. Bhd. He had more than 34 years of working experience primarily in the Palm Oil, Water & Wastewater business. He had been instrumental in bringing the Kubota Membrane Bioreactor technology from Japan to use local engineering to adapt it for the Palm Oil Industry

Water pinch sounds interesting. Please come along, and partake of the food (both intellectual and physical).
