As part of the historic record of the creation of Synergy Oil & Gas Engineering Sdn. Bhd., I have created some Photosynth views of the office here and here.

From The Star – IPP & Gas Prices

January 22, 2009

Those of you who are old enough to remember the original Sony Walkman or SimSci’s ProII would remember when starting up an Independent Power Producer (IPP) was the equivalent of being on top of a Ponzi scheme.

Seems like 2009 is the year history repeats itself. Here’s the article deadline 2009-01-15:

This is because payments to the IPP’s make up 45% of  [Tenaga National Berhad’s] cost and fuel cost 15% … TNB has paid IPPs over RM9bil in the last financial year.

I can almost swear Jabba thought this one up.

January 21, 2009

Those of you who complain that it’s difficult to get jobs in the oil & gas industry, you should go talk to Perisai Petroleum.

The following is an extract from The Star, dateline 2008-01-15:

Perisai Petroleum Teknologi Bhd MD Nagendran Nadarajah is upbeat about staying focused on services for deepwater and small/marginal oilfields.

Excerpt from The Star – Dayang Enterprises

January 20, 2009

Those of you who complain that it’s difficult to get jobs in the oil & gas industry, you should go talk to Dayang Enterprise.

The following is an extract from The Star, dateline 2008-01-15:

Upstream oil and gas service provider Dayang Enterprise’s outstanding order book has expanded to RM500mil compared with RM300mil during its IPO last April 2008.

Saturday Star 2009-01-17 – Job Opportunities

It’s also looking for admin execs who can run the invoicing / payroll / accounting as well as be office managers. We DO have a physical office, y’know.
  • Carigali Hess is looking for a Head of Mech Eng, Snr Rot Eqt Eng and Snr Instr Eng. Send you CVs before 31st Jan 2009 to job@carigalihess.com, or snail mail to HR & Admin Section, Carigali Hess Operating Company Sdn Bhd, Level 68, Tower 2, PETRONAS Twin Towers, KLCC 50088 KL.

Sigh, since I have moved with Synergy out of KL, will you patronise Chee Meng in my memory? Or invite me to meetings around Bukit Bintang at lunchtime?

Gas Price Review

January 18, 2009

Taken from The Star, Dateline 2008-01-15:

The (Malaysian) Cabinet has agreed for the price of gas sold to the energy sector to be reviewed earlier than the scheduled revision in June.

But, during the last gas price review, when the price of gas went supposed to go up, nothing happened. Must be that laissez faire mechanism called political economics (my grouse for the the day).

Safety vs. Profits – Civilian Life

January 17, 2009

In the oil and gas industry, we claim that safety is paramount, more important than profits or cost. An oil and gas engineer will:

  • Design a fail safe asset.
  • For existing assets, additional safety equipment may be installed if the standards of safety have changed, or as low as reasonable practicable (ALARP) requirements have changed.
  • If hardware can’t be designed or installed, we introduce procedures that staff can follow to minimise risk. Not the best solution, but a solution none the less.

In the real world, safety might have a different priority. I took the following photos at Cosmo’s World Theme Park, Berjaya Time Square, Malaysia. Emergency doors are installed, in case a quick emergency exit is required. However, I guess that they have had problems in the past, where ‘customers’ come in through the door and bypass the paying facilities. You gotta wonder, how exactly does this door function?

To their credit, if you did have to exit via this door, you find this little item next to it, kinda like the old style adventure games:

get-out-of-emergency-key

I for one probably won’t find the key in a real emergency. I wonder if their fire drills are witness and approved by Bomba.

Firefly to … Kerteh!

January 16, 2009

Happy days are here again, we have commercial flights to the petrochem centre of the East Coast, Kerteh.

Extracting from the Star, January 10th 2009:

PETALING JAYA: Budget airline Firefly will now fly to Kerteh in Terengganu twice daily from Subang.

Firefly managing director Eddy Leong said in a statement that the route was the company’s way of committing itself to providing alternative and affordable travel for all Malaysians.

“In addition, the Kerteh route will add convenience to leisure travellers. Well known tourism spots such as Kijal and Cherating are just a few minutes drive from Kerteh.”

Leong said Kerteh would be the airline’s second destination in Terengganu after the state capital.

Here is the preliminary announcement about Firefly’s service. FY 2003(a) departs Kerteh at 0750, FY2007(a) departs Kerteh at 1820. I sure hope the flight stewardesses are nicer than the ones on the MHS charter flight.

Now all Synergy needs is more work down there…
