Here’s a new food place, run by a friend of mine. One6 kopitiamhas a mini-library inside the shop, my kind of place. Now, if it had the latest editions of O’reilly books… Think I’ll be stopping over there every time I get in on a late flight from KLIA, as it’s on the way home.

IEM Shout Out – Maximise Water Reuse / Recycle

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on 5th August. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

Rapid industrial growth has contributed to serious water pollution in the world; hence, effective measures are needed to reduce industrial water use and discharge. Water reuse and recycle are commonly accepted as the most promising solutions to the water problems faced by the world-wide community. However, only recently has a systematic design strategy for maximum water recovery in the process plants is being established. In this regard, process integration techniques have been the main focus towards the development of this systematic design strategy. In this talk, novel process integration techniques based on pinch analysis technique will be shown on how to design a water network in a systematic way.

The above will be presented by Engr. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dominic Foo. who is an Associate Professor with the University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus.

From the Star – Merapoh to build RM36bil oil refinery in Kedah

Country’s biggest such facility to take shape in Yan by 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Merapoh Resources Corp Sdn Bhd aims to complete the building of a US$10bil (RM35.7bil) oil refinery in Yan, Kedah, which will be the biggest in the country, by 2013 or early 2014, said executive chairman Md Nazri Ramli.

“We have appointed South Korea’s SK Group, which owns one of the world’s largest oil refineries and the third largest industrial group in South Korea, to do the engineering and construction of the project and the maintenance of the refinery,” he said at an agreement signing ceremony for the project here yesterday.

In another development, Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the proposed US$7bil 300km oil pipeline project from Yan, Kedah to Bachok, Kelantan, was under review but didn’t give the reason for the review.

We hope that the refinery will start up when fuel consumption is on the rise.

IEM Shout Out – Drilling Engineering Overview

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting the above seminar on the 5th August.

Drilling Engineering Overview shall present the audience with the knowledge and arts of drilling wells, especially in Malaysia. It shall be presented in a way that is comprehensible to the engineers who are with or without the oil and gas background. The objectives of the seminar are to provide exposure to audiences the drilling practices and issues as well as to assert the audience with an appreciation of a Drilling Engineer’s work scope.

The seminar will be led by En. Razak Yakob. He has been in the oil and gas industry for 13 years working for companies such as ExxonMobil, Halliburton, and Talisman Energy. As a consultant, he has worked in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Algeria and others.

IEM Shout Out – Course on Design Considerations in Static Equipment Application

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Tech Division (sorry, one of my tech divisions) is hosting a course on the above topic. It’s at ILSAS, on the 27-28 July, 2009.

The course can be broken down into 2 parts:

Weld symbols, brittle fracture, fatigue and ductile fracture.

  • Basic understanding of welding symbols according to AWS, BSEN, behavior of welded structure in service, factors affecting brittle, fatigue and ductile, features of fracture

Design consideration for static, pressure vessel and aluminium structure.

  • Basic understanding of design principles, properties of aluminum

The above will be presented by Mr. Ian Partridge, Principal Project Leader, Equipment Risk Consulting, Structural Integrity Technology Group

Blend of Old Skool and New Tech

I had to send my Star Destroyer (aka car) in for servicing. I use my usual shop in USJ, where the head mechanic / director is an old  hand at servicing SDs of my vintage. Turns out that the problem was more complex than he thought, so he had to use a diagnostics  computer tool to interrogate the innards of my machine.

Turns out he’s not to versed with the OEM diagnostic tool, so I spent a fair bit of two evenings playing around with the tool (which had the potential of bricking my SD). I thought it was a nice mix of techie experience, and me doing my part to enhance by using something with an LCD on it.

Turns out the error was the effect of two different root causes, which he found by swapping parts round with his own personal SD. Not something you can easily do with a DCS, huh?
