IEM Shout Out – Steam Boiler Course and Scenario Thinking

July 4, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 7th July. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

It is a truism that the future is unpredictable. However, its development can be better anticipated through developing and using scenarios. Scenarios are stories about different and plausible futures that can be created using the powerful scenario thinking and planning tools. They assist the decision makers and business planners to be more anticipative and adaptive to the changes and critical uncertainties impacting their businesses as they navigate the future.

The above will be presented by Victor Foo, and has been jointly organised by the Society of Institution of Engineers Australia

Also, my Tech Division is hosting a steam boiler operations & maintenance course as well. It’s at ILSAS, on the 7-8 July, 2009.

  • Chapter 1 – Factories and Machinery Act, 1967
  • Chapter 2 – Introduction to Steam Boilers
  • Chapter 3 – Boiler Operations and Trouble-shootings
  • Chapter 4 – Boiler Water Treatments
  • Chapter 5 – An Introduction to Combustion
  • Chapter 6 – Boiler Maintenance and Repairs
  • Chapter 7 – Non-Destructive Testing and Basic of Metallurgy
  • Chapter 8 – Steam Boiler Failures

The above will be presented by Ir. Mohd Normarzuki Ya’acob.

Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here.

From The Star – Tapis Price Adjustment

July 2, 2009

Petroliam National Bhd (PETRONAS) raised a price-adjustment factor in it Tapis crude oil to 60 cents a barrel in June … last month, the price component was 40 cents a barrel.

Interesting to note that peninsular malaysia crude is stil called Tapis crude, though Tapis is no longer a major contributor to crude output. Maybe we should call it rojak crude.

Saturday Star 2009-06-27 – Job Opportunities

June 29, 2009

Another week, another scan of the Saturday Star newspaper. Here’s a list of job ads in the paper:

  • First off, Synergy is looking for 5 lead safety engineers and 3 lead process engineers. Visit the Synergy website for contact details. And safety specialists. Ah, heck. If you have more than 5 years experience in O&G, apply. If you have less than 5, send a donation to the offshore account, and still get abuse.
  • Nippon Oil Exploration (lovingly known as NOEX) is looking for a contract engineer and project engineer. If you want to apply, snail mail to Human Resource Section NIPPON OIL EXPLORATION (MALAYSIA) LTD., Lot 116B, 3rd Floor, Wisma Interhill, Miri Waterfront Commercial Centre, 98000 Miri, Sarawak.
  • Total is looking for a Sales Engineer (Industrial). Send details to hr@totaloil.com.my

Sigh, since I have moved with Synergy out of KL, will you patronise Chee Meng in my memory? Or invite me to meetings around Bukit Bintang at lunchtime? Is he doing packet specials?

Maybe I should change loyalty to Pakeeza, which is a bit closer to the office.

From The Star – PETRONAS to cut Costs

June 28, 2009

Dateline 2009-06-26:

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) is seeking to slash its expenditure by 30% from the amount it spent in its 2006 fiscal year.

“There must be shared misery. We must have a hard look at costs,” said president and CEO Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Merican.

I’m getting mixed messages. The previous week’s articles said that O&G market is getting back on its feet. And then PETRONAS cuts expenditure (and the companies at their knees). And for growing companies like mine, how we gonna pay for milk and diapers?

From the Star – Oil Play Back in Favour

June 26, 2009

Dateline 2009-06-20:

…Most oil and gas players do not have direct exposure to oil prices. The industry has a wide range of business models, and most of the local players provide services to Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) and other oil majors, comprising of PETRONAS’ production sharing contractors (PSCs) such as Murphy Oil, Shell and ExxonMobil.

And I see Uzma’s boss, Datuk Kamarul Redzuan Muhamed, is quoted in the article, which you can get from their site.

From The Star – Downturn Crimps Industry Investments

June 25, 2009

Dateline 2009-06-20:

Given that the demand for energy can only rise and that crude oil will still make up the largest portion of the energy mix of the future, governments and energy companies will have their work cut out for them in satisfying the huge appetite for fuel and power amid growing concerns over sustainability issues.

However, the global economic recession has slowed investments in the oil and gas industry, with double-digit drops in percentage terms in the upstream conventional fuel renewable energy segment  compared to 2008, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

June 23, 2009

I suggest you don’t hang around inside a shirt once you spill battery acid on it.

Also, don’t hang around in a car boot which has split battery acid.

No engineers were harmed in the making of these photos.
