There was a MOGEC/MOGSC Intercompany Futsal Tournament last Saturday. Below are some shots I took.

From The Star – Caught in a Middle Income Trap
February 17, 2010I’m posting this article, dateline 2010-02-07, because there was a specific paragraph on the oil & gas industry:
…
PETRONAS is known worldwide for being a successful national petroleum company. PETRONAS has done really well for the country in terms of generating oil and gas revenue from both Malaysian and non-Malaysian fileds. Unfortunately, unlike the E &E sector, upstream oil and gas production has not resulted in the emergence of a corresponding vibrant downstream oil & gas subsector.

From Arab News – Oilman Con Scam
February 16, 2010Taken from Arab News, dateline 2010-02-12:
Con men target job seekers in new cyber scam
JEDDAH: Fraudsters are using the Internet to tempt job seekers in the Gulf with false offers of work in Malaysia.
Those who fall for the trick are asked to pay around $1,500 in administration costs, which the con artists pocket before breaking off contact with their victims.
The gangs typically e-mail their targets with a package consisting of a substantial monthly salary, fully furnished accommodation and free medical and travel insurance, among others.
“These gangs have chosen Malaysia because it is an economically vibrant country where people would love to work,” said one would-be victim of the scam, who chose to remain anonymous. He said the swindlers obtained his personal data from the Internet and sent him an e-mail offering him a good job at a big offshore oil company in Malaysia
It’s nice to know that Malaysia still has value among the scammers of the world, though I haven’t seen a 419 scam with a Malaysian originating address, though.
Saturday Star 2010-02-13 – Job Opportunities
February 15, 2010I was browsing through the Reporter online lately, and out of curiosity, I looked up the lecture schedules of NatSci and ChemEng. Lo and behold, the timetable (and in some cases the lecturer) has not changed since I last stepped into the halls in 1995.

Taken from Bernama – MDC wins PSC
February 14, 2010Taken from Bernama, dateline 2010-02-12:

From Brunei fm – Johor to be Oil & Gas Hub
February 11, 2010Here’s a new source of information, Brunei fm, dateline 2010-02-03:
JOHOR BAHARU, MALAYSIA, Feb 3 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Plans by the southern Malaysian state of Johor to become the western Pacific region’s leading oil and gas hub by 2025 will receive a major boost with the opening of a speciality steel pipe manufacturing plant in the state this weekend.
The 250 million Ringgit (one USD = about 3.4 Ringgit) investment by Erndtebrucker Eisenwerk GmbH & Co KG (EEW) of Germany, is the first of several major new investments in the state’s oil and gas sector.
Anyone visit Johor often?
From Pipeline International – Trans Oriental
February 10, 2010Ah, some interesting tech news, dateline 2010-02-03:
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Trans-Oriental Gas Pipeline (TOGP) has been signed between Distinct Objective Sdn Bhd (DOSB), Asia Consortium Petroleum Engineering and Gas, Messrs Enmac Sekutu Sdn Bhd, China’s Panyu Chu Kong Steel Pipe Co and Dongah Tec of Korea.
Under the agreement, approximately 4,000 km of subsea natural gas pipeline, extending from Malaysia to South Korea, will be constructed.
DOSB will build a 2,500 km section of pipeline running from offshore Pahang, Malaysia to north Vietnam.
I take that back, some interesting political news. From offshore Pahang… wonder where our PM hails from, think it was coastline province of one state on the east coast.
IEM Shout Out – Electrical Reliability Mindset in The Petrochem, O&Gas Plant Industries
February 8, 2010This is a shout out for the IEM. A Technical Division will hosting the above talk on the 9th February, 2010. It’ll be at 6:00 pm (makan-makan at 5:30) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.
The full title of the talk is An Evening Talk, “Introduction of Electrical Reliability Mindset to The Petrochemical, Oil, and Gas Plant Industries”. The speaker, MR. JIM WARDHAUGH graduated from University of Liverpool, is a Chartered Engineer, and spent about 10 years in utilities then about 30 years with Shell. He has demonstrated success in senior management and hands-on positions in many different roles (projects, construction, maintenance, technical, inspection, warehousing, transport, quality, and training) in a number of different countries; in each a step-change improvement in performance was achieved.
Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building identified as ‘Puteri Nursing College.’
