From Bernama – Anifah Takes PETRONAS to Task

May 7, 2011

Out of curiosity, is there some resurgence of East Malaysia citizens who wish to partake in the nation’s development closer to home?

Dateline 2011-04-30:

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman took Petronas to task Saturday, saying that the national oil corporation did not give opportunities to the Bumiputera community in Sabah.

He said the only thing to show that Petronas was open to working with local companies was a memorandum of understanding (MOU) it signed with the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM) with regard to its oil and gas project in Kimanis.

Even then, it was not good enough as the MOU was not legally binding and therefore not enforceable, he said when opening the DPMM Sabah chapter’s 13th annual general meeting here Saturday.

Anifah noted that Petronas, upon embarking on the multi-billion ringgit project, had sidelined local companies and engaged concessionaries from outside Sabah.

Shout Out – Talk on Computational Fluid Dynamics in the Oil and Gas Industry

April 19, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a talk on the 23rd March, 2011. It’ll be at 9:30 am  (makan-makan at 9:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

This talk intends to raise awareness of participants on the increasing importance of CFD in the oil and gas industry. This is achieved by sharing real life examples of CFD applications in Malaysia and how it helped companies in understanding process and equipment issues and assisted them in making sound engineering decisions.

Examples include applying CFD:

• to find a working design for a conceptual design of a novel slug catcher on an FPSO

• to debottleneck an oil-water tilted plate separator

• to investigate severe metal thinning in a crude oil pipeline

• to understand the effects of subsea pipeline leaks on the surrounding environment

• to understand thermal plume behaviour on an FPSO

Ir. Rafael Shamsudin started his professional career with Protek Engineers Sdn Bhd as Process Engineer after completing his BSc in Chemical Engineering from University of Southwestern Louisiana, USA. He joined Babcock K-W Sdn Bhd later on, but soon after he decided to venture into his own business, establishing Dinaz Engineering Sdn Bhd in 1997, providing generic process engineering design capabilities particularly for oil and gas industry.

Zamir Rashid graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering in 2003 and a MSc in Thermal Power and Fluids Engineering in 2004 from UMIST Manchester. He started off his career as a CFD analyst in Lotus Engineering in Norwich, UK on a 2-year graduate training programme before coming back to Malaysia where he joined CAD-IT Consultants Sdn. Bhd., the sole representatives to ANSYS Inc, as the technical sales engineer for ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS CFX CFD software. During this time, Zamir conducted various training courses and supported CFD users in Malaysia, from various industries (such as Automotive, Aerospace, Semiconductor, and Oil and Gas) as well as from academic institutions (such as Uniten, UKM, UM, UPM, UTM and UTP). He is currently the Simulations Manager at Integrated Process Solutions Sdn. Bhd., a local Oil and Gas consultant providing process design services. Zamir is currently completing his MBA from Manchester Business School on a part time long distance basis, and is due to graduate in 2012. He loves cars and has a passion for motorsport.

From The NST – RON97 (went) up by 20 sen

April 16, 2011

Dateline 2011-04-01:

The price of RON97 petrol will go up by 20 sen to RM2.70 per litre effective midnight tonight, according to the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM).

PDAM deputy president Datuk Zulkifli Mokti said the increase was due to the rise in the price of crude oil to US114 per drum this week from US105.

“This is due to the crisis in the Middle East,” he said when contacted by Bernama tonight.

Zulkifli said the price was likely to increase in the future due to the situation in the Middle East which he added could prolong.

On Jan 31, the price of RON97, which was floated according to the prevailing oil market price, rose by 10 sen to RM2.50 per litre.

RON95 petrol remains at RM1.90 per litre.

IEM Shout Out – Visit to Selinsing Gold Mine

April 13, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My technical division will be hosting a trip to Selinsing Gold Mine, Kuala Lipis, Pahang on the 30th April, 2011. You will be anointed with 2 CPD / PDP hours.

Selinsing has a long mining history. Mining commenced prior to 1888 and has operated intermittently through to 1966. Underground and open cut mining, together with tailings treatment has produced an estimated 85,000 ounces of gold during this period. Fast forward to present day between 2003 and 2005, treatment of the tailings using heap leach extraction produced 6,624 ounces. In October 2008, a new gold treatment plant was built resulting in the first gold poured from the gravity circuit 12 months later. July 2009 saw open pit mining started at the location and began hauling ore material to the ROM pad for production and by February 2010 the projects’ own carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit commenced commissioning.

..

Tentative schedule:

  • 07.30am Bus departs from IEM, PJ
  • 10.30am Arrive at Selinsing
  • 10.30am – 11.00am Safety induction and project briefing
  • 11.00am – 11.45am Mill tour
  • 11.45am – 12.30pm Property and Mine Tour
  • 12.30pm – 2.00pm Lunch, Photography session and End of Visit
