IEM Shout Out – Advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) In Engineering Application

April 12, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a course on the 25th and 26th April, 2011. It will be held at TUS room, Wisma IEM, Petaling Jaya.  The course is worth 13 CPD or PDP points.

Non Destructive Testing (NDT) methods determine the welding integrity of materials and its characteristics without doing any harm to the materials. The course gives an overview of the more advanced NDT methods commonly used in industry, the principles behind them, their applications and advantages. These NDT methods are :

  1. Phased array ultrasonic
  2. Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD)
  3. Computer Radiography
  4. Auto Ultrasonic Testing (AUT)

Please register here. You can download the registration form here.

A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building labelled ‘Putri Nursing College.’

I appeal to readers, come on and send yourselves and staff to these courses. I need the support.

I didn’t see any adverts for engineers this week. What gives? Ranhill Worley filled to the gills? Aren’t new engineers required in the Middle East?

From The Star – Late gas disruption notice upsets firms

April 10, 2011

Can anyone explain why there was a “late notice” to PETRONAS’s customers?

Dateline 2011-03-25:

The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) says Petronas’ natural gas upstream facilities shutdown will lead to several manufacturing companies having to reduce their gas consumption significantly from March 30 to April 12 and April 29 to May 10.

While FMM said the significant reduction of gas supply to both the power sector and manufacturers was unavoidable due to the necessity in carrying out major maintenance work at the upstream facilities, the late notification has caused anxiety among manufacturers and uncertainty for companies that have orders to meet.

Shout Out – Talk on Energy Efficiency using Hydrocarbon as Green Refrigerant

April 7, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a talk on the 12th March, 2011. It’ll be at 5:30 pm  (makan-makan at 5:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

There are several benefits of using hydrocarbon as refrigerant. Utilizing environmentally-friendly refrigerants and clean agents exceeding Malaysia’s commitment to the Montreal & Kyoto will earn the user 2 points under The Green Building Index scores. More importantly user will benefit from reduction in the energy demand by improvement of chiller performance and in a long run a longer compressor life.

The talk will explain on the concept of hydrocarbon refrigerant, the application of the system with some case studies using Hychill Hydrocarbon Refrigerants. The speaker will clarify the myth surrounding the refrigerants and the benefits that the industry will get by using Hydrocarbon as the refrigerant.

Ir. Al-Khairi Mohd Daud, PEng, M.I.E.M, C.Eng. MBA has nearly 20 years of experience in engineering projects, reliability and maintenance management with multinational companies in cement, oil and gas, oleo chemicals, petrochemicals and specialized building facilities including high technology research facilities, hospital and factory. Currently he is the principal consultant for Faqeh Management.

From Bernama – Optimisation Important for Profitability in Oil & Gas

March 25, 2011

Dateline 2011-03-16:

The employment of optimising techniques and technologies that are cost efficient to safeguard profitability is crucial in the oil and gas sector, in particular with regard to the risk service contract (RSC).

he employment of optimising techniques and technologies that are cost-efficient to safeguard profitability is crucial in the oil and gas sector, in particular with regard to the risk service contract (RSC).

The RSC is essentially a contract that significantly increases an operator’s risks of exposure, said ARC Media Global Pte Ltd in a statement today, in conjunction with the Production Optimisation Week Asia in Kuala Lumpur from July 25-29.

In this case, the awardees or the consortium bears almost all the operating risks and is not paid in the event that the project or system fails, ARC Media Global explained.

The optimising of production becomes more pertinent with the RSC to develop the Berantai field as Petronas imposes strict key performance indicators on deliverability, production and costs, it pointed out.

Petronas awarded a RSC to a consortium comprising Kencana Petroleum Bhd, SapuraCrest Petroleum Bhd and foreign partner Petrofac.

Shout Out – Talk on Managing Knowledge In Engineering Premised Organization

March 22, 2011

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be hosting a talk on the 25th March, 2011. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

Knowledge Management (KM) has evolved to become a work functional discipline since the Nineties. It is about strategies and practices that an organization can gainfully use to identify, create, represent, distribute, and/or effect adoption of insights and experiences. These insights and experiences are actually knowledge that are both embodied within manning individuals and inherent within work processes of the organization.

Encik Agil Atan is a self-employed mechanical engineer who had retired after 32 years of service with PETRONAS. His past work experience include planning, designing, engineering, procurement, inspection, construction, pre-commissioning, post-commissioning audit, and engineering maintenance of chemical and process plants including those relating to mechanical installation, rotary equipment, and piping. He has held positions as executive mechanical engineer, project engineer, project manager, and general manager. En. Agil has wide knowledge of and work exposure in managing engineering-based information and had been the head of Knowledge Management at the PETRONAS Group Technology Solutions Division prior to retirement.
