PETROANS picks (not Khir) Toyo for revamp project at Malaysia gas processing complex

January 2, 2013

Dateline 2012-12-18:

Japan-based Toyo Engineering has been awarded a contract by Malaysia’s Petronas for the rejuvenation and revamp project of the No. 4 gas processing plant located in Kerteh, Terengganu, the firms said on Tuesday.

The plant will have a capacity of 250 million cubic feet/day, according to project officials.

Toyo is slated to provide engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning with a turnkey contract for expanding the plant’s life by another 20 years.

Toyo cited an extensive track record for Petronas projects at Kerteh, including basic design work for prior revamp projects of gas processing plants No. 1 and No. 2.

Waiting to Enter Plant

The cool thing about Kerteh that if you bundle all your stuff into a car, your standby location to enter a plant can have a great view of the South China Sea.

Optimal – A Fully PETRONAS Company

September 9, 2009

I can’t find this news on any Malaysian news site. I first read about it in the TCE:

TO further ease its debts, Dow Chemical has agreed to sell its stake in Optimal to Malaysian partner Petronas for $660m.

I pulled an extract from Project Finance International (subscribers only):

Dow has recently sold its entire stake in Malaysia-based Optimal Group of Companies to Petroliam Nasional (PETRONAS).

From Optimal’s history page, there are only two investors, UCC (now part of DOW) and PETRONAS.

I remember when Optimal was sucking up the Kerteh workforce with higher pay and better compensation. They opened up an international school in Kerteh, to cater for the (highly paid) expats who came in for the first 2 years. They also closed the school when the expats left, so you know it wasn’t meant as a service to local staff, even those who could afford it.

So, does this mean that the current Optimal salary, wages and benefits (SWB) will be in line with the rest of PETRONAS? Is there going to be an exodus of talent from Optimal to … don’t think there are other high-paying jobs around the KIPP (Kawasan Industry Petroliam PETRONAS), so we’ll see another exodus overseas.

The SOGE Story – Visiting Clients

June 12, 2009

As I travel round visiting potential and ongoing clients, I am heartened to see that some of them give back something to the Malaysian engineering community. Here’s a sign I found in Kerteh, Terengganu.

Thank you, MECIP in supporting the IEM. If you would like to continue supporting SOGE, even better.

Kerteh Work Opportunities – Shipment Inspector

January 31, 2009

Deadline:  The service proposal for the above has to be in by the 5th Feb, 2009 (Kerteh gets Friday and Saturday off), so you need to respond by the 4th, the earlier the better.

That’s inspectors for crude oil and condensate quality surveys, not for policing. What my contact is looking for are:

  1. Inspectors
  2. Marine Cargo Surveyors
  3. Trainers
  4. Inspector Supervisors

Marine Cargo Surveyors, Trainers and Inspector Supervisors and shall hold International Federation of Inspection Agencies (IFIA) Certification or equivalent. Any non-compliance shall require prior approval from client.

If you have suitable qualifications, for a donation I’ll point you the right way, and submit your qualifications to my contact.

Me? I get vertigo at about 2 meters, never mind 20.

Firefly to … Kerteh!

January 16, 2009

Happy days are here again, we have commercial flights to the petrochem centre of the East Coast, Kerteh.

Extracting from the Star, January 10th 2009:

PETALING JAYA: Budget airline Firefly will now fly to Kerteh in Terengganu twice daily from Subang.

Firefly managing director Eddy Leong said in a statement that the route was the company’s way of committing itself to providing alternative and affordable travel for all Malaysians.

“In addition, the Kerteh route will add convenience to leisure travellers. Well known tourism spots such as Kijal and Cherating are just a few minutes drive from Kerteh.”

Leong said Kerteh would be the airline’s second destination in Terengganu after the state capital.

Here is the preliminary announcement about Firefly’s service. FY 2003(a) departs Kerteh at 0750, FY2007(a) departs Kerteh at 1820. I sure hope the flight stewardesses are nicer than the ones on the MHS charter flight.

Now all Synergy needs is more work down there…

Nostalgia – TCOT and OSC, Kerteh

July 13, 2008

Ah, the new signage for the Terengganu Crude Oil Terminal (TCOT) and Onshore Slug Catcher (OSC) are up.

TCOT – Officially handed over to PCSB

July 5, 2008

Okay, sue me for repeating a previous article.

To quote an extract from a notice I saw:

Today, July 1, 2008, the operatorship of the Terengganu Crude Oil Terminal, Onshore Slugcatcher and condensate facilities was officially handed over to PETRONAS Carigali. The transfer of operatorship of these onshore facilities to PETRONAS Carigali is part of the terms of the Main Principles Agreement of the 2008 PSC that was signed by ExxonMobil, PETRONAS and PETRONAS Carigali last March 26.

Go visit Kerteh and visit the sites.

The Kerteh Subang Commute

June 22, 2008

Did you know that if you were Petronas or EMEPMI staff, you can take advantage of a chartered flight between Subang and Kerteh? It shaves off hours from the usual KLIA-Kuantan-Kerteh route. It leaves Kerteh at 7:00, leaves Subang at 8:30. The afternoon flight leaves Kerteh at 4:30, and leaves Subang at 6:00. As a former colleague of mine says, it’s travelling during gentleman hours.

No inflight movie, and no refreshments. The reading material is a bit thin, something about exits. Did I mention that 2 people sit abreast? You do get a personel safety briefing by the flight captain.

A commercial flight used to travel between Kerteh and Subang, Pelangi Air. Rumour has it that it went down due to mismanagement.

So, a business opportunity. Maybe work with Awana Genting for packages, and promote Pulau Tenggol. Actually, don’t promote Tenggol, I want to keep the diving crowd to the ‘need to know’ basis.

Malaysia – Cost of Natural Gas Price Increase

June 10, 2008

What’s been obvious to consumers in Malaysia is the ‘release’ of petrol (bahan bakar motor as they say in Indonesia), causing the pump cost to rise to RM2.70/l from RM1.92/l.

What I haven’t seen so much of is comments on the rise of gas prices. Here’s a summary:

  • Power producers – RM14.31/MMBTU from RM6.40/MMBTU (120% increase)
  • Industrial users, low consumers – RM24.54 from 9.40 (160%)
  • Industrial users, high consumers – RM32.56 from 11.32 (190%)

Natural gas is used as a raw material for many modern products. So, we can be sure that all chemical industries will hit the rakyat with a price increase which is independent for rising fuel costs.

I wonder how this will effect the Kawasan Industri Petroliam PETRONAS (KIPP) out there in Kerteh? Most of the plants there depend on gas feedstock, for example Petlin, Optimal,  Ethylene Malaysia, and the various companies listed below (I would link to the PETRONAS page, but it’s one of those funky frame pages). I guess a round of repricing, efficiency, retreating to core businesses, and mergers is in order.
