Exxon – Poster Booboo
October 13, 2009ExxonMobil Malaysia is usually top notch when it comes to posters, presentations and all other pictorial forms of communication. That why this poster amuses me so much:
Let’s see now, on average I travel 60km a day, yet using the recommended grade of motor oil, I can gain up to 250 miles (400 km) per day. Why isn’t my tank overflowing with the 340km worth of petrol I can gain per day? Or is this based on someone who travels 20,000 km per day?

ESPs in Malaysia – Finally
October 7, 2009As I go on my marketing rounds, I went and visited Dato’ R. We went quaffing and dungeon crawling … nope wrong blog. I gotta stop playing Nethack.
Anyhow, he shared with me that he and his team has installed electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) in a Malaysian operations environment. The units are installed using CTUs as opposed to drilling rigs (to the workover engineers among you, can you explain why this is important?). The ESPs are Western Submersible Pumps.
Gaslift now has competion. Some of the ESP advantages I can think of are:
- less compression capacity is required, as the volume of recirculated gas is reduced.
- Improved controllability: flowrate only depends on pump perfomance curves, rather than say, compressor availability.
- Mature Tech: someone count how many ESPs are in Acheh.
Though I think that use of ESPs indicate that Malaysian fields are acknowledged to be on the decline.

From the Star – SapuraCrest JV gets RM600mil job

KUALA LUMPUR: Sapuracrest Petroleum Bhd’s joint venture company, SapuraAcergy Sdn Bhd has secured a US$170mil (RM600mil) contract from Apache Energy Ltd for the transportation and installation of offshore facilities in Australia.
SapuraAcergy is a joint venture company equally owned by SapuraCrest and Acergy S.A.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, SapuraCrest said the contract, which was part of the Devil Creek development project involves transporting and installing about 91 km of 16-inch rigid pipeline including a shallow water beach approach, subsea tie-ins and stabilisation works together with a wellhead platform of 1,700 metric tonne four leg jacket and a 450 metric tonne topside processing module.

IEM Shout Out – Emerging Technologies to Monetize Small Natural Gas Resources
September 27, 2009This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on Saturday 10th October, 2009. It’ll be at 9:00 am (makan-makan at 11:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.
The number of large natural gas fields for mankind’s exploitation is reducing as we go into the future. Future natural gas fields are relatively smaller, scattered in various geographical locations and contains higher acidic components. As the world’s energy demand continues, there is an urgent need to develop emerging technologies to monetize small natural gas resources around the globe which could not be economically carried out now.
The above will be presented by Dr. Ir. Chan Tuck Leong, is a Chemical Engineer graduated from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He is currently the Head of Gas Technology in the gas business of the national oil company. His responsibility covers assessment of emerging gas monetization technology for commercialization and exploitation of small gas reserves.

The SOGE Story – Member of MOGSC
September 25, 2009I have started getting emails related to MOGSC activities, so I presume that Synergy is a paid-up, card carrying, flag waving member of MOGSC. I haven’t seen any benefit yet, except probably a ‘Huh?’ when our name was circulated for approval. I wonder if there are 3rd degree members, 33rd degree members, aprons and rolled up trousers involved (sorry, just finished reading the Lost Symbol).
Looking forward to the Hari Raya do at MPC. Another photo opportunity. Just call me paparazzi of the oil and gas industry.
I submitted SOGE’s membership for MOGEC the same day as the MOGSC application. Maybe we’re not good enough for them…

From Bernama – SBM wins USD1.2B Contract

Oil and gas services company SBM Malaysia Sdn Bhd has won a contract worth US$1.2 billion to supply a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel.
The contract was awarded by its holding company, Amsterdam-listed SBM offshore on behalf of U.S. listed Noble Energy Inc, which is developing offshore oil and gas projects in Block one of the Aseng field in Equatorial Guinea, which is located in Central Africa.

The FPSO Aseng will be capable of processing 80,000 barrels of oil per day and will have water and gas injection capabilities, Replumaz told a media briefing, here Tuesday.
I wonder if I can get a sniff of this work.
