TH Heavy Engineering Berhad, an offshore oil and gas facilities fabricator, clarified Tuesday that the firm is not aware of the one year extension given by Japan’s JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration (Malaysia) Ltd. to complete the floating, production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit for the Layang field in Block SK10 offshore Sarawak, Malaysia as reported May 28 by a local media, it said in a filing on Bursa Malaysia.

Malaysia gas find for Sapura

There’s a big difference between ‘gas find’ and ‘finds gas’, which I read upon first glance, and triggered an aggressive response.

Dateline 2016-05-31, OE:

SapuraKencana Energy discovered gas in two of the three wells drilled in 2015 within the SK408 block contract area, offshore Malaysia in Sarawak.

The first well Jerun-1 is approximately 5km north of the 2014 Bakong gas discovery. Based on analysis of electric log, pressure and sample data, Jerun-1 has an interpreted gross gas column of about 800m in the primary target reservoir and is a multi-Tcf gas discovery.

Jeremin-1, about 15km west of the F9 gas field encountered a 104m gross gas column, but Putat-1, 20km north of the Cili Padi gas field was confirmed as a dry hole. All wells have been safely plugged and abandoned.

SapuraKencana said Jerun-1 and Jeremin-1 together with the earlier five discoveries within Block SK408 are close to existing infrastructure supplying gas to one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu, Sarawak.

SapuraKencana as operator holds 40% working interest in the project, and partners PETRONAS and Sarawak Shell hold the remaining interest of 30% each.

IEM Shout Out – Introduction to Oil and Gas Industry – An Engineering Design Perspective

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 17th August, 2016. It is worth 6 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Mohammad Adnan Sujan.

This course aims to share basic fundamental design and development knowledges in the Oil and Gas industry. It exposes the participants to the design methodology and general concepts in the engineering and construction side of the industry.

It starts off with an understanding of oil and gas formation, characteristic and reservoir fundamentals. Then it touches upon the topics of surveying and drilling activities. Next, it explains the concept of oil and gas offshore complex and its specific offshore structures. Brief explanations of the offshore platform types and designs that exist in offshore areas are soon followed.

Separation process is also included to explain the separating method involved for the crude oil stabilization prior to storage or export. Different types of separation process equipment are shown for clarity. Basic design drawings and document deliverables required for each engineering discipline are then explained for the process and the engineering design development.

The module will continue with a project management topic, which will present participants with the important of project management, project phases, project management control & execution documents and project management challenges a& risks. The module will conclude with the electrical equipment hazardous area classification and ingress protection rating for oil and gas installation requirements.

Ir. Mohammad Adnan Sujan, P.E. – is a graduate from Drexel University Philadelphia USA in Electrical Engineering, (BSc 1998 and MSc 2001).  He has 15 years of working experience in the engineering industry, covering the onshore, offshore and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) designs. He has involved in a wide ranging activities, from technical proposal to detailed design, and even construction, installation & testing. He has worked on a number of projects globally; these include Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Syria, USA, Trinidad and Vietnam.

Adjustments necessary: Shell

The current tough oil price environment hit many oil and gas companies hard, including oil giant Shell Holdings Bhd, forcing them to find new balance in order to sustain its business in the State and elsewhere.

Sabah Shell Malaysia General Manager Ian Lim said due to the low price of Brent crude oil, the entire industry had had to make adjustments including deferring or stopping projects and restructuring to achieve lower costs.

“Indeed, like many, Shell is preparing for a lower for longer scenario. Here in Sabah, our challenges are, firstly, we are operating mature assets with increasing unit operating costs in an operating low oil price environment.

“Secondly, our deep water assets are prolific but they are also complex and have challenging operating environments due to the much deeper water depths,” he said during his keynote address at the 5th Sabah Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition here.

Nevertheless, Lim said, Shell is committed to staying in business for the long term in the State and this will require a new balance that focuses on growing its deep water business, being more competitive and efficient and nurturing local talents.

Petronas: Nothing to Russian talks

More grist for the rumor mill. Yes, those Russian are lying. And yes, hold your PETRONAS stocks.

Malaysian energy company Petronas said it was not the target of a sale of its assets or any of its stakes to counterparts in the Russian energy sector.

The Malaysian company referred to Russian reports suggesting it may dispose of some of its interests.

“We wish to clarify that Petronas has not been and is currently not in discussions with any Russian party for the abovementioned purpose,” the company said in a statement.

Last week, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said markets in the Asia-Pacific may see an increase in exports of natural resources from Russia. He said talks between Russian energy company Zarubezhneft and Petronas were part of that effort.

Get set for competitive prices thanks to Gas Supply Bill 2016

Consumers in Malaysia are set to enjoy competitive pricing and efficient services in gas supply, thanks to the Gas Supply (Amendment) Bill 2016 passed by the Dewan Rakyat today.

The amendment is set to enhance competition with the participation of third parties in the gas supply industry by implementing Third Party Access (TPA).

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, in winding up debate on the bill, said the gas supply industry is currently monopolised by existing industry players such as Petronas Gas Bhd and Gas Malaysia Bhd.

“Currently, the only party which supplies gas through pipeline transmission is Petronas, the nation’s natural gas producer which sells gas to other parties such as Gas Malaysia Bhd.

UPDATE 1-Malaysia’s Petronas warns of further oil price impact as profit hit

Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Bhd warned that lower oil prices will continue to hurt its earnings on Wednesday after its first quarter profit fell by 60 percent.

The state-owned company has been hit hard by a tumble in oil prices that has forced it to slash costs and reduce dividends to the government. It detailed plans this year to cut spending by up to 50 billion ringgit ($12 billion) over the next four years.

“Concerns on moderate demand outlook and persistent oversupply will continue to pressure crude oil prices,” Petronas said. “Petronas expects performance to be affected by the volatility of oil prices and foreign exchange rate.”

PFLNG Satu sails to Malaysia

PETRONAS’ first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) facility, PFLNG Satu has set sail to the Kanowit gas field, offshore Sarawak, making its 2120 nautical mile journey to Malaysia.

At 365m long and 132,000-tonne, PFLNG Satu was towed from the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering shipyard in Okpo, South Korea, for the offshore phase of the project.

Once moored at the Kanowit gas field, it will proceed with the installation, hook-up and commissioning of the facility.

PETRONAS’ advisor of global LNG project delivery and technology, Datuk Abdullah Karim said the sail away marked a significant milestone in PETRONAS’ bold decision to deliver a game changer in the global LNG business, as it paves the way for opportunities to monetize the greater availability of stranded gas reserves.
