Shell continues to study recent gas discoveries

There have been a total of 10 gas discoveries by Shell and partners in Sarawak in the past 24 months, all of which are still under study.

According to Shell Global Solutions Malaysia, Projects and Technology managing director Simon Ong, over the past few years, Shell and its partners have made quite a few discoveries, mainly in gas offshore Sarawak – some of which are quite significant in volumes.

“We have a very active exploration program, we have one of the biggest exploration expenditure in this country about US$100 million per year, in the last last few years.

“We have made significant discoveries, both us and our partners, made a lot of discoveries, predominantly in the Sarawak side. But, we also have plans to look into Sabah,” Ong said during a press conference on the Malikai Sail Away Milestone over the weekend.

Shell’s first TLP set for Malikai field duty

Shell Malaysia has unveiled the country’s first tension-leg platform (TLP), which is set to sail to Malikai field offshore Sabah soon. The platform was designed and fabricated by Malaysians. Shell holds a 35 per cent stake in the Malikai project, with Conocophillips and Petronas Carigali owning 35 and 30 per cent, respectively. “The deepwater business is under pressure like others in the industry. Now that we have built this capability in Malaysia, we have a responsibility to sustain these skills and talent so that they stay relevant. “It will take strong collaboration and partnership to open up new frontiers and deliver value and create wealth for Malaysia, as well as the companies participating in these ventures.

Petronas employs increasing number of Sarawakians

There is an increasing number of Sarawakians being employed by Petronas in line with the company’s expansion of the upstream sector in the state.

Assistant Minister for Industrial Development (Investment and Promotion) Datuk Julaihi Narawi, said Petronas was commited to developing human capital and gave priority to the locals.

He told the State Legislative Assembly yesterday that the number of employees in the upstream sector in the state had increased by 10 per cent to 4,400 this year, compared to 4,000 in 2015.

From the 4,400 employess 71 per cent were Sarawakians, he said, adding that 313 were Sarawakians from the increased figure of 400 this year.

PFLNG SATU reaches Kanowit gas field offshore Malaysia

Petronas’ first floating LNG vessel, PFLNG SATU, has reached the Kanowit gas fieldoffshore Malaysia, the company posted on social media.

The vessel set sail from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. shipyard in Okpo, South Korea, to the Kanowit gas field, 180 km (112 mi) offshore Sarawak on May 14.

“After [a] 2,120 nautical mi (2,439 mi /3,925 km) journey to ‪Malaysia, on the 30 May 2016, the ‪‎PFLNG 1 has finally reached its destination,” Petronas posted.

The vessel measures 365 m (1,198 ft) in length, 60 m (197 ft) in width, and 33 m (108 ft) in height. It is designed to operate in water depths between 70 m and 200 m (230 ft and 656 ft) and has a processing capacity of 1.2 million metric tons of LNG per year.

Labuan is ideal for O&G decommissioning works

The island, renowned in the past for oil and gas sector fabrication, maintenance, logistical support and storage works, is ideal as a base for decommissioning works.

However, for such project management, there are less than five locals who have the actual experience in managing decommissioning projects subject to the Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO).

Although cutting tools, marine spread and engineering teams are available locally, the police will not approve explosives as the best option for decommissioning, leaving only abrasive water jetting and diamond wire cutting as the preferred choices.

Ir. Dr Dasline Sinta, CEO and principal consultant of Dream Catcher Energy Sdn Bhd, said about 300 platforms in Malaysia are located in water depths of eight to 138 metres.

In his presentation at the 5th Sabah Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition titled “Decommissioning of offshore oil and gas facilities in Sabah and Sarawak”, he said based on field life estimation, about 15 platforms could be decommissioned soon.

Sabah lacks oil-gas sector skills: Don

And after all the effort to make Sabah a spin-off of Malaysia’s Oil & Gas Hub.

Despite Sabah having abundant oil and gas (O&G) resources, there is a lack of skilled technical Sabahan manpower in the O&G industry.

This situation was highlighted by Professor Ir. Dr Rosalam Sarbatly (pic), the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in his presentation “Challenges and opportunities in developing the skill and talented human capital in oil and gas sector in Sabah” at the 5th Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition recently.

Dr Rosalam is also the executive director for UMS Oil & Gas Sdn Bhd (UOil).

“This is compounded by a lack of interest among many local students in science, technology engineering and mathematics, particularly from rural areas,” Dr Rosalam explained, pinning his hopes on rural area students, as more urban students tend to opt for prestigious professions like architecture, medicine, law, accountancy and others.
