From the Star: Talisman Scholar Visits Offshore

December 3, 2009

Taken from the Star, dateline 2009-11-29

WORKING on an oil rig isn’t something many would relish, but Gan Hui Ling, 23, enjoyed her stay and made full use of her offshore experience.

Spending a week aboard the Bunga Raya Platform – located in the overlapping maritime zone of Malaysia and Vietnam – the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Bioprocess Chemical Engineering final-year student familiarised herself with the processes and equipment aboard the rig.

Though thankful that she wasn’t claustrophobic, Hui Ling’s only gripe was the rig’s limited space, which raised some accommodation problems.

Hui Ling says that the scholarship award gives her more motivation for her final year.

Her one week on the rig was part of her internship with Talisman Malaysia Limited, the national division of the oil and gas company from Calgary, Canada.

We hope that this inspires more lady engineers to break into oil and gas. Read ‘accomodation problems’ as ‘a four bunk room had to be emptied for one lady’, or have they changed policies offshore already?

Saturday Star 2009-11-28 – Job Opportunities

December 2, 2009

First off, if you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, you are definitely Cylon fodder.

  • My sources: Hess is looking for Senior Mechanical Engineers. Bribe me, and I’ll deign to look at your CVs. Put me in another tax bracket, and I may forward your CVs on.
  • Synergy is looking for safety engineers. Visit the Synergy websites (Jakarta and KL) for contact details.
  • Talisman is looking fora Mechanical & Piping Eng. Apply here, and visit their site.
  • Lundin advertises again! Yes, I purposely put these two items next to each other. If you’re an old time like me, you appreciate the irony. They are looking for a Drilling Manager and 2 Drilling Engineers. What, they plan to give the engineers two sharp sticks, and be quick about it?  Apply here, and visit their site.

I really can’t recommend any food places this week. I’m in Miri, and nothing local catches my attention. For those knowing me, it would mean the places I’ve eaten till now must really be blah. C’mon people, send me your contact details and take me (and my family) out for dinner!

News – Award of Malikai to MMC-Amec

November 29, 2009

I know that this is old news, but I didn’t want to be chased by lawyers and phrases such as non-disclosure, confidentiality undertaking, and so forth. The news has already broken here.

Congratulations to MMC-Amec for winning the Shell Malikai FEED contract. I wish you all the best, and hope that any spillover will come my way. Cheques to Synergy Oil & Gas Engineering Sdn Bhd, please.

From The Star: Exxon and Coca-Cola to invest in Malaysia

November 28, 2009

Dateline 2009-11-14:

SINGAPORE: Two American companies are expected to make substantial investments in the local beverage and gas sectors soon.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said petroleum firm ExxonMobil Corporation had expressed its intention to venture into high CO2 content gas extraction while beverage giant Coca-Cola wanted to build a new modern plant in Malaysia.

Hah, here’s a funny one. ExxonMobil will be extracting CO2. Coca-Cola products are carbonated, which means they require a CO2 source in the future. What is that upcoming CO2 extraction source, I wonder?

I predict the next Coca-Cola plant will be in Kertih. What say you? “Beverage and gas sectors’ indeed.

BTW, I’ll be in Miri next week. Any more eating place suggestions?

From Upstreamonline.com: PETRONAS founder heads royalty probe

November 27, 2009

Taken from upstreamonline.com, deadline Wed 25th Nov (original article source here):

The founding chairman of PETRONAS, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has agreed to head a Parliamentary Caucus mooted by Malaysian opposition coalition Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to redistribute oil royalties from the federal government to the state authorities.

PR leader Anwar Ibrahim said Razaleigh had accepted the invitation in the Parliament this morning.

The Caucus aims to draft amendments to the Petroleum Development Act to ensure that oil-producing states — including opposition-controlled Kelantan — receive royalties in line with the philosophy that constituted the Act in 1974, the Malaysian Insider reported.

And if you want Ku Li’s views, here’s a sample taken from his blog.

Me? I’ll enter politics when corruption makes it worth my while.

The SOGE Story – HMI Web Training

November 26, 2009

I think this training course is on Honeywell’s HMI Web system, though with the multitude of courses we give our engineers and the rate they are improving, I’m losing track. Contact the Technical Director if you need Synergy’s services.

Heck, you NEED our services, you just don’t know it yet.

Shout Out – Talk on Ecotowns for Asia

November 20, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on 24th November, 2009. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

This talk will cover such topics as, what is sustainability and why it is important, what advances are being made, what types of technology are now available in the market and will present a proposal on how to integrate this technology in a holistic manner in the form of Eco-Towns for Asia.

I definitely agree, we need to have communities that don’t mess up the environment. And if they do, hey it’s your trash, you will sleep in it, play in it, eat in in, don’t ship it to where it becomes someone else’s problem (SEP if you follow the HHGTTG).

The above will be presented by Mr. Joe Eades, the Managing Director for Ispahan Engineering Pte Ltd, (www.ispahan.com) an engineering company specialized in engineering for the process industries, and Ispahan Solutions which provides Enterprise and Engineering Document Management software solutions for the engineering and construction industry.

Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building identified as ‘Puteri Nursing College.’

The SOGE Story – Food, Glorious Food

November 17, 2009

Once in a while, we have a makan-makan session in the office. The staff aren’t shown, because watching them eat may be a bit… unsettling.
