Petrofac Awarded US$220 million Refurbishment Project in Malaysia

June 26, 2012

I was wondering when the report will come out, as to how you get a fire in a supposedly depressurised, offline platform.

Dateline 2012-05-22:

Petrofac Facilities Management Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd (Petrofac), part of the Petrofac Group, has been awarded a US$220 million contract by PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of PETRONAS, the Malaysian national oil company, for the refurbishment of the Bekok-C platform, located in Block PM9 in the south-eastern part of the Malay basin. The project will be executed on an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) alliance basis and is valued at US$220 million.

Bekok-C is a manned platform serving as a gas processing and compression hub exporting gas from the Guntong, Tiong and Bekok fields of Block PM9 in addition to production of crude oil and gas from its own wells. Under the terms of the refurbishment project Petrofac will provide EPCIC services to the platform with the overall project expected to be completed in around 15 months.

C’mon. Buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. I need the money to pay for my new camera. Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me.

If you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, no need to ask.

  • I’m looking for a senior process engineer, 7+ years experience. Send your cv here . Also looking for process safety persons, lead piping designer, lead instrument engineer, and other seniors you think will catch my eye.
  • SapuraKencana has a multi-page ad (half page here, 2 pages there, another page towards the arse end of the supplement). Send your cv here. They should pay more attention, I am getting an error message upon visiting their site “Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.” Beats the 404 message, I guess.
  • MMC Oil & Gas Engineering Sdn Bhd is looking for people. Send your cv here. I happen to know they are not registered as a Engineering Consultancy Practice under every discipline they provide services for, yet they have a multi-disciplinary registration with PETRONAS. How does that work?
  • I see Petrofac is looking for engineers. They are ‘at the heart of oil & gas operations’. If you want to be in the left atrium,  send your cv here.
  • Hey hey, I see that Labuan Shipyard & Engineering are advertising.  Send your cv here, or snail mail at Human Resource Manager, Labuan Shipyard & Engineering Sdn. Bhd., km 9, Jalan Ranca-Ranca, P.O. Box 81210, 87031 Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia.

Shout Out – One Day Workshop on Industrial Wastewater Analysis

June 25, 2012

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a seminar on the 9th July, 2012. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 7 CPD hours.

The fluctuation of effluent quality is always a challenge for industrial wastewater treatment. Wastewater analysis conducted by competent personnel is very important to provide accurate characteristics of the effluent so that the actual condition of the treatment efficiency can be evaluated effectively. In practice, precise and consistent measurement is sometimes difficult to obtain and is mainly due to the lack of knowledge and experience in analysis for most cases.

The workshop on “Industrial Wastewater Analysis” is aimed to help in capacity building and to build confidence in industrial wastewater monitoring and analysis. Technicians, engineers, chemists, scientists and researchers who work in water and wastewater related areas are greatly welcome. The objective of this workshop is to provide knowledge, introductory training and basic skills on industrial wastewater analysis through lectures and discussion. Some simple hands-on demonstration will be arranged during the workshop.

Ir. Assoc. Prof. Dr Chong Mei Fong obtained her BEng (Chemical) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and her PhD at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). She received several “Sanggar Sanjung” awards for publications with journals of high impact factor. She joined The University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus as an Assistant Professor to start her professional career. In 2009, she worked as a visiting scholar to Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU), Taiwan. In the same year, the WaterInno Award gold medal was conferred on her for her outstanding works on wastewater treatment.

A mountain of a project: the Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipeline

June 20, 2012

Dateline 2012-06-1701:

In order to develop the rich natural gas fields beneath the South China Sea, offshore Malaysia, Petronas proposed the Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipeline. However, construction of the project has by no means been a small feat, with construction contractor Punj Lloyd overcoming undulating mountains, dense rainforests, and unrelenting wet weather.

Petronas’ plans to develop the gas fields offshore Sabah involves construction of the proposed Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) at Kimanis, which is scheduled for completion in 2013. Once operational, the terminal will be able to receive, store, and export up to 300,000 bbl/d of crude oil, as well as receive, process, compress, and transport up to 1.25 Bcf/d of gas produced from the Gumusut/Kakap, Kinabalu Deep and East, Kebabangan, and Malikai fields.

The 512 km, 36 inch diameter Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) will transport 750 MMcf/d of gas from the SOGT to the Petronas LNG Complex at Bintulu, Sarawak. It is being constructed using API 5L X70 steel grade pipe, with a thickness range of 14, 17, and 20 mm, and will have a design pressure of 96 bar.

In 2008, Petronas awarded Punj Lloyd an engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning contract for the SSGP, which includes:

  • Cathodic protection
  • A launcher station at Kimanis
  • A compressor station at Bintulu
  • Metering stations at both Kimanis and Bintulu
  • Intermediate pigging stations at Lawas, Long Lama, and Bintulu
  • 22 block valve stations
  • Six future tap-off points along the pipeline.

2012 capex to go to pipeline

June 19, 2012

Dateline 2012-05-21:

Gas Malaysia Bhd, which expects to raise RM734.45 million from its initial public offering (IPO) on June 11, will spend about RM130 million to RM140 million this year to expand its natural gas pipeline network.

Its managing director Datuk Muhamad Noor Hamid said the capital expenditure (capex) will be used to build a 70km to 90km natural gas pipeline in addition to its existing 1,800km network in Peninsular Malaysia. A couple of this pipeline will be built to connect new areas such as Padang Terap (Kedah) and Chuping (Perlis).

“For subsequent years, the capex will taper down to RM40 million to RM30 million per year,” he told a news conference after the launch of its prospectus on Friday.
