Saturday Star 2009-11-21 – Job Opportunities

November 23, 2009

Is it me, or was there no recruitment section in The Star? There’s nothing on the ebrowse site. Anyone get a hardcopy of the paper? If so, can you mail it to me 🙂 I ‘ll cover the domestic mailing costs. Or steal it from the batch of returned papers outside your local 7-11.

  • Synergy is looking for safety engineers. Visit the Synergy websites (Jakarta and KL) for contact details.

This week’s food recommendation is Aero Caterering Sdn Bhd based in MAS Complex A SAAS Airport (Subang International Airport for us old timers). They supplied the food for my MRSM Muar ’84 batch reunion dinner on Saturday night. I don’t think they have a food outlet, but try them out for some Minang food.

Esso Open Day 2009

November 21, 2009

As always, ExxonMobil Exploration & Production Malaysia Inc (EPMI) does things on a grand scale. Say 3 months planning and preparing, about 2 backup contingency plans, reviews up to the highest levels of management, culminating in a smooth execution, impressed clients and vendors, and promotions all round.

Shout Out – Talk on Intellectual Property

November 14, 2009

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on 16th November, 2009. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

In the course of their work, engineers may have to face many issues related to Intellectual Property (IP) rights. They may even have generated their own IP that requires protection. In this talk, the main speaker, Mr. Rozlan Khuen will dwell with issues such as the definition of IP, need to protect IP and how to determine if someone is infringing someone else’s e IP.

If you work for a big multinational, I suggest if you have a brilliant idea, work on it in your own time, outside office hours, away from the office. ‘Course, if you have a money making idea, your owner… I mean employer will say that you were inspired by the work the slave driver… I mean company provided, hence they own your gluteus maximus, and any money derived thereof. The speaker can prove me wrong, though.

The above will be presented by Mr. Ng Khuen Wee (Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya and a MBA Graduate from the University of Malaya where he majored in International Business and Corporate Finance) and Ir. Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman (Associate Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department, University of Malaya. He started his career with Dowell Schlumberger and moved around as a process engineer with Golden Hope and later with Nestle until 1993 where he joined University of Malaya as a lecturer).

Fliers for the above and other events may be obtained here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here. It’s the building identified as ‘Puteri Nursing College.’

From the Star – Petronas awards two offshore contracts

November 12, 2009

From the Star, dateline 2009-10-27 (I’ve been away, okay?):

PETALING JAYA: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) awarded two production sharing contracts (PSCs) for Block SB309 and Block SB310 offshore Sabah with an estimated minimum financial commitment of US$75mil and US$117mil respectively yesterday.

In a statement, Petronas said the PSCs were awarded to a partnership between its exploration and production arm Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and Talisman Energy Inc’s wholly owned subsidiary, Talisman Malaysia Ltd.

Talisman Energy is a global, diversified, upstream oil and gas company headquartered in Canada.

Under the terms of the PSCs, Talisman Malaysia, with participating interest of 70% in each block, will operate both blocks.

Here’s something to follow up in the year, ooh maybe 2012 (3 years exploration rights, I assume).

And why does everyone spell PETRONAS with lower case? Non-O&G reporters…

Bintulu – Roughing it

November 12, 2009

Ah, during my recent trip to Bintulu, we asked for a Royal Suite at the New World Suites, but no, we can only get a Junior Suite. Sigh… Have a look, and tell me whether this meets your business travel standards.

The SOGE Office – Full to the Brim

November 10, 2009

Another Photosynth view of the office. We’re getting a bit more fuller, and I suppose we have enough money to pay for the rent and the lights. We’d like some more work during these trying times.
