Food Presentation- Chiang Rai

June 24, 2010

I’ve been out of the country. As part of the tour, we had food at Muslim restaurants from Chiang Mai northwards (and westwards as well).

I am not sure whether this group of restaurants base their dining selection off a proto-menu, or whether this is typical local fare.

Anyone have recommendations where to go in Chiang Mai for shopping should I happen to be there again soon?

From O&G Journal – ExxonMobil to boost Tapis field production in Malaysia

June 15, 2010

I understand that the Tapis EOR CPP ITB was sent out to all parties listed under the appropriate PETRONAS SWAC code, as there wasn’t any pre-screening performed. That meant that some parties were invited to bid for a project whose bank guarantee amount was similar to their yearly income.

Taken from the Oil & Gas Journal, dateline 2010-06-10:

ExxonMobil to boost Tapis field production in Malaysia

Eric Watkins, OGJ Oil Diplomacy Editor

LOS ANGELES, June 10 — ExxonMobil Corp. said its enhanced oil recovery project at Malaysia’s Tapis field will start in 2013, with an estimated gross investment of more than $1 billion, according to a senior company executive.

“This latest contract includes commitments to implement an enhanced oil recovery project at the Tapis field and will be the first ever large-scale project of its kind in Malaysia,” said ExxonMobil senior vice-president Andrew Swiger.

“The Tapis project represents yet another major step forward to develop Malaysia’s full energy potential,” Swiger told the Asia Oil & Gas Conference.

Tapis field is one of seven mature offshore fields that ExxonMobil (78%) and state-owned Petronas (22%) have agreed to develop as part of a 25-year production-sharing contract that was finalized in June 2009.

Under the agreement, which includes provisions for the deployment of EOR and further drilling to boost output, work will be carried out on all seven fields, including Seligi, Guntong, Tapis, Semangkok, Irong Barat, Tebu, and Palas.

The Tapis oil development, which lies 190 km off Terengganu in 64 m of water, produces an extra-light, low-sulfur crude, and once served as the benchmark for pricing oil cargoes in Australia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

From UPI – Malaysia poised as next oil and gas hub?

June 13, 2010

I guess I should start hitting the books. Does anyone recommend a good text on deep water engineering? Or know a deep water engineer we can hire at cut-throat rates?

Taken from UPI, Dateline 2010-06-09:

Malaysia could become the world’s fourth deep-water oil and gas hub after Houston, Rio de Janeiro and Europe, an industry executive said.

“In terms of subsea industry, Malaysia is already a hub by itself,” Bernard Di Tullio, president and chief executive officer of Technip Group, an offshore and engineer contractor with a presence in 48 countries, told reporters Tuesday on the sidelines of the 15th Asia Oil and Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

Demand for deep-water access in Asia Pacific has been strong in the past two or three years, Di Tullio said, and Malaysia has been responding quickly in developing the sector.

Malaysian Oil Producer, Reverse Auction

June 10, 2010

From what I’ve been told, PETRONAS is starting to use reverse auctions to squeeze the best price out of Design Engineering Services contractors. I have heard that PCSB-SKO has used this technique at least thrice, and that’s without me actively investigating the matter.

The way it works is as follows: Approved service providers are told to login to an auction page at a given time. The scope of work/services being auctioned off is given a starting price, hopefully the price is higher than what the SPs think is a fair value.

When the auction starts, service providers will be allowed to input their price to execute the work, the only limitation is that it has to be lower than the incumbent price (duh). To prevent last minute sniping, I’ve been told that the auction only closes 60 minutes after the last entry.

Now, I believe Shell did this either in the UK or Australia, but there were complaints from the industry. When will the outcry come from our local players? Or is there no recourse for a intellectual discussion on the topic?

From the Star – Petronas keen on home oil fields

June 8, 2010

So, does this article explain why PETRONAS now has EVPs, similar to ExxonMobil, and how we, er they are scrambling to prevent Malaysia from becoming a net crude import nation? Oh, and how their new President is making his mark and leaving his legacy?

Take from the Star, dateline 2010-06-05:

KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (PETRONAS) will search for more oil and gas reserves in Malaysia at the expense of overseas exploration and has changed its management structure to have its executive vice-presidents in charge of key operations to shoulder more responsibility.

Domestic oil exploration would see PETRONAS drill deeper for oil and gas on the shallow waters of Malaysia but the company is also looking to increase the amount of oil it pumps out from existing wells in Malaysia.

PETRONAS will also be pouring more management time on its oil and gas business and would be looking to scale back and divest operations which it considers non-core to the crux of PETRONAS.

Pangkalan Brandan

June 6, 2010

Pangkalan Brandan has old ties to the Indonesian oil & gas industry, heck it even had a large contribution to one of the oil majors.

And why do I have photos of the place? Synergy had some business there. Obviously not to rejuvenate the abandoned, historical refinery, that’s beyond an OTS or flow assurance. Though, if they wanted to rejuvenate the place as a historical site, like the Grand Old Lady, I’m all for it.
