OGFJ – Malaysia goes deeper and further afield

July 12, 2010

Here’s an article from the Oil & Gas Financial Journal. I was one of the hundreds interviewed, but I guess I’m Too Sexy for this Sheet:

When Malaysia´s Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak unveiled its highly anticipated New Economic Model (NEM) in March 2010, he re-emphasized the importance of the oil & gas industry for Malaysia. “In oil and gas, we have one of our nation’s most visible and valued champions in PETRONAS. It has built a strong brand internationally, and I believe now we must also help drive growth here in Malaysia with even greater support for local suppliers as it grows. Beyond the core oil and gas sector, however, Malaysia’s international energy expertise can help companies in this industry and beyond expand internationally by sharing its know-how, partnering on international bids and offering support on a truly global scale. The strength of having a well-developed pool of local talent and companies which are able to compete globally gives us a lead advantage.”

You can’t like recreational mathematics and not know about Martin Gardner, who passed away on May 22nd, 2010. I was reintroduced to him via the book Alex’s Adventures in Numberland. Above are collections of his work. Go and buy everything he has published on maths, and send me a set gratis.

IEM Shout Out – Control in Biomedical Engineering

July 9, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a talk on the 12th July, 2010. It’ll be at 5:30 pm (makan-makan at 5:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

As the use of anesthetics in operation is to loss of sensation even by painful stimulation, here a question arose is what is sufficient dosage of anesthetics for a patient during a surgery? Because an overdose of anaesthetic can result in brain injury from asphyxiation, cardiovascular injury which can cause heart attack or stroke, tracheal damage, and wrongful death.

Closed loop system for patient under general anesthesia and diabetes type I patient is designed. The controller design in biomedical using model-based and model-free technique is discussed. Model-based optimal closed loop clinical trial for general anesthesia is discussed.

The speaker, Dr. Syafiie has a doctorate degree from the University of Valladolid, Spain in area of system engineering and automatic control. He did post doctoral research at department of electrical energy, system and automation collaborated with department of anesthesia and university hospital at Ghent University, Belgium. His project was development and clinical validation of a MIMO model-based predictive closed-loop system to guide patient-individualized ICU sedation.

Dr. S Syafiie has published several articles in area of model-free and model based control engineering and image processing. His current post is senior lecturer at department of chemical and environmental engineering at university putra malaysia.

Food Recommendation – Bangkok Restaurant

July 7, 2010

Here’s a little known gem in Bandar Baru Kerteh. The place is so popular you can’t walk in to get a lunch place, it’s typically booked solid. Take dinner there if you want to sample the delights, and try speaking Thai if you want to get off the menu items.

Did I mention the place is halal? I mean the food is halal, not that the building foundation… you get the idea.

The approximate location is here.

Murphy is looking for a subsea engineering manager. Send your applications here.

Hmm, short list this week.

As for reading recommendations, I think the Millennium Trilogy would be your best bet. I didn’t realise that the author passed away in 2004, with the first English translation of his book being published posthumously. For those who don’t know which books I’m referring to:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Vintage)

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage)

PETRONAS unfair to Sabah?

June 25, 2010

First, the important stuff. Today is the one year anniversary demise of the King of Pop. C’mon KL, let’s roll down those car windows, and here his hits blast out across the streets! And a bit of moonwalking as well.

Back to our scheduled broadcast. A former chief minister speaks out against PETRONAS. He’s asking for a Sabahan to be appointed to the Board to look out for Sabah’s interests. Don’t know about you, but doesn’t a board of a company look out for its own interests? You would assume that Sabah will be a big contributor in the future, so if the Board was reasonably competent (and the PETRONAS senior executive team reasonably… reasonable?) Sabah’s future in the PETRONAS scheme of things is already taken care off.

Dateline 2010-06-24, though I don’t know how credible the e-newspaper is.

Kota Kinabalu: The best means of ensuring that Sabah’s interests are not ignored in Petronas’ dealings is to have a Sabahan appointed to its Board, said former Chief Minister Datuk Harris Salleh.

“It is believed that no Sabahan has been appointed by Petronas as a Board Member since its inception,” he said in a statement, Wednesday.

He said it was more timely now as “I understand Sabah is at the start of an oil boom after a string of successful discoveries of deep water fields”.

He believed the State’s deepwater projects like Kikeh, Gumusut/Kakap, Ubahcrest, Pisangan, Malikai Sumandak, Ambalak, etc, would propel Sabah to be the biggest producer of crude oil in Malaysia.

He said the projections are that Sabah is expected to produce 500,000 to 600,000 barrels per day compared to the current national production of only 700,000 barrels per day.

“This is not inclusive of (ex-Petronas Chairman) Tengku Razaleigh’s claim of a huge oil deposit found off Sabah, the biggest in South East Asia capable of producing one million barrels per day,” he said.

With the massive expected production from Sabah and from its operations since 1975, Harris presumed the State would be fully engaged in the industry, with major oil and gas infrastructures, downstream industries and activities.

I want an Orang Noghri (or Sumatran) to be appointed to the Board, to ensure adat pepatih is fairly represented in legal dealings.
