Gas pipeline may be entry point for illegals

May 17, 2015

Oi, it’s my idea to stuff things into transborder pipelines to allow for, ahem, liberalised, GST-free trade:

Dateline 2015-04-10, Bornoe Post:

The Sabah Sarawak gas pipeline route could be another way illegal immigrants are entering Sarawak from Sabah via Miri, said state Immigration director Datu Robert Lian.

The pipeline links Kimanis, Beaufort and Sipitang, Sabah to Lawas, Baram and Bintulu. Robert said he would get villagers in the area to report the movements of those who are not locals near their kampungs or longhouses.

He said Miri Airport could also be another entry point as rural air service flights from Lawas are not subject to immigration checks.

“Our Immigration officers stationed at Miri Airport are now beefing up checks on passengers from Lawas to Miri and Miri back to Lawas at Miri Airport to ensure that there are no loopholes for illegals to come to Miri,” he told a press conference on Wednesday.

Labuan ‘has potential’ to become O&G hub in the region

December 1, 2012

Dateline 2012-11-14:

Labuan has the potential to become a major oil and gas (O&G) hub with its strategic location, being adjacent to international shipping lanes and its close proximity to deepwater O&G fields offshore Sabah.

Industry players note that Labuan’s proximity to Sipitang and Kimanis in Sabah, where close to RM8 billion in value of downstream facilities are being constructed, is seen as another one of its advantages.

Industry officials also note that Labuan has two major facilities crucial to the O&G activities – the Labuan Shipyard & Engineering Sdn Bhd (LSE) and Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd (ASB).

From Bernama – Musa Hails Petronas’ Focus On Sabah O&G Firms

November 17, 2011

Do you get the impression that us small folks in the Peninsular will be marginalized?

Dateline 2011-11-03:

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman today expressed his appreciation to Petronas chief executive officer Datuk Shamsul Azhar Abbas for his sincere efforts to ensure business opportunities are given to local contractors in the oil and gas industry.

He said this was evident from Petronas’ commitment to award contracts worth RM600 million to Sabah firms in the Sabah Ammonia-Urea Plant (Samur) in Sipitang.

Musa said apart from this, investments worth billions of ringgit in downstream projects would create huge multiplier effects and offer diverse opportunities to locals.
