IEM Shout Out – Talk on “Managing HSE Challenges in Oil & Gas Industry”

My technical division will be hosting a talk seminar on the 17th August, 2016. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir.Lee Chang Quan. Safety practitioners, fill up the seats, please.

In view of the hazards and risks associated with production, transportation, and handling of hydrocarbon, companies in the oil and gas industry have always given the pledge to have the subject of Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) as the top business priority. People may get injured or killed, and environment may be damaged. It is evident from the history that, if the hazards and risks are not managed properly, catastrophic disaster could happen, as in the case of Piper Alpha, Bhopal, or the recent one at Macondo.

Managing HSE has remained a top challenge though. In the time of market volatility since year 2015, many oil and gas companies have taken serious measures to control cost so as to survive the turbulence. It is in this time of cost pressure that the pledge of maintaining HSE as the top business priority will be tested.  This talk will look into the key HSE challenges faced in the oil and gas industry, and share on how these challenges could be managed, especially in times of turbulence.

 

Ir. Lee Chang Quan started his career as a mechanical engineer with a design engineering firm, and moved on to join a national oil company. His experience in the oil and gas industry includes engineering, procurement, installation and construction activities in plant modification and rejuvenation projects. He has led a few feasibility studies, engineering management work and managing brownfield projects. Later, he moved on to undertake operational excellence and improvement roles at business level. He is now the Health, Safety and Environment Manager with one of PETRONAS subsidiaries, formulating HSE strategies and implementation plan. He is a trained internal auditor, involving in Tier 1, 2, 3 HSE Assurance Programs. He is an active trainer in HSE programs. Occasionally, he delivers adjunct lecture to university students in the subject of mechanical engineering and safety.

Ir. Lee Chang Quan graduated from University Teknologi Malaysia with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has a Master Degree in Business Administration from University of Nottingham. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP®). He is also a committee member of the Oil, Gas and Mining Technical Division of IEM.

IEM Shout Out – Visit to Selinsing Gold Mine

This is a shout out for the IEM. My technical division will be hosting a trip to Selinsing Gold Mine, Kuala Lipis, Pahang on the 20th August, 2016. You will be anointed with 4 CPD / PDP hours.

Selinsing has a long mining history. Mining commenced prior to 1888 and has operated intermittently through to 1966. Underground and open cut mining, together with tailings treatment has produced an estimated 85,000 ounces of gold during this period. Fast forward to present day between 2003 and 2005, treatment of the tailings using heap leach extraction produced 6,624 ounces. In October 2008, a new gold treatment plant was built resulting in the first gold poured from the gravity circuit 12 months later. July 2009 saw open pit mining started at the location and began hauling ore material to the ROM pad for production and by February 2010 the projects’ own carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit commenced commissioning.

IEM Shout Out – Talk Handling Sand Issues In The Upstream Oil & Gas Production

My technical division will be hosting a talk seminar on the 18th August, 2016. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Ir. Dr. Eow John Son.

The presence of sands and solids in wellhead production lines are likely to cause erosion and blockage issues in the subsequent downstream equipment at oil & gas production platforms. As a consequence, dangerous incidents, such as the failures of flowlines, production vessels and control valves, have a higher risk of occurring. Moreover, oily sands discharged into the sea are also an environmental concern.

The objective of the Talk is to introduce the participants to the sand removal technologies, such as wellhead de-sanders, produced water desanding hydrocyclones, sand fluidizers, and sand cleaning systems, which are commonly used in the upstream oil & gas production platforms. Moreover, these sand removal and cleaning systems need to be designed and operated correctly to ensure optimized separation performance.

Ir. Dr. Eow John Son is Principal Engineer & Trainer with EDES Technology Sdn Bhd. He is also a Professional Engineer (BEM), and a Chartered Engineer (Engineering Council, UK). He obtained his PhD (in electrostatic water-oil separation) from the UK, and has published many technical papers in international journals and conferences. Having spent many years in multinational companies, and having worked in the UK, Singapore, Japan and Malaysia, John is well-versed in the oil & gas processes and production technologies, such as Wellhead Desander, Produced Water Treatment, Sand Separation & Management, Crude Oil Treatment, and Gas Processing for the upstream oil & gas Industry. He has worked from Technical and Commercial Proposal Stage to Detailed Engineering Stage to Commissioning Stage to Production Troubleshooting for oil & gas processes. John has conducted technical training and consultancy work for engineers and operators at Saudi Aramco, PETRONAS, Sarawak SHELL, GAIL India, etc. He is also an Assistant Professor at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

IEM Shout Out – Introduction to Oil and Gas Industry – An Engineering Design Perspective

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 17th August, 2016. It is worth 6 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Mohammad Adnan Sujan.

This course aims to share basic fundamental design and development knowledges in the Oil and Gas industry. It exposes the participants to the design methodology and general concepts in the engineering and construction side of the industry.

It starts off with an understanding of oil and gas formation, characteristic and reservoir fundamentals. Then it touches upon the topics of surveying and drilling activities. Next, it explains the concept of oil and gas offshore complex and its specific offshore structures. Brief explanations of the offshore platform types and designs that exist in offshore areas are soon followed.

Separation process is also included to explain the separating method involved for the crude oil stabilization prior to storage or export. Different types of separation process equipment are shown for clarity. Basic design drawings and document deliverables required for each engineering discipline are then explained for the process and the engineering design development.

The module will continue with a project management topic, which will present participants with the important of project management, project phases, project management control & execution documents and project management challenges a& risks. The module will conclude with the electrical equipment hazardous area classification and ingress protection rating for oil and gas installation requirements.

Ir. Mohammad Adnan Sujan, P.E. – is a graduate from Drexel University Philadelphia USA in Electrical Engineering, (BSc 1998 and MSc 2001).  He has 15 years of working experience in the engineering industry, covering the onshore, offshore and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) designs. He has involved in a wide ranging activities, from technical proposal to detailed design, and even construction, installation & testing. He has worked on a number of projects globally; these include Brazil, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Syria, USA, Trinidad and Vietnam.

Shout Out – Talk on “Enhanced Oil Recovery in Malaysia – Challenges”

My technical division will be hosting a talk on the 18th May, 2016. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The talk will be presented by Ir. Razak Yakob. Please come, or I’ll be beaten up in a dark alley.

In order to sustain the local production EOR is one of the major agenda in our Economic Transformation Program.  It is one of the 13 Entry Points Project that supports the Oil, Gas and Energy NKEA (National Key Economic Areas).  Even with the high recovery factor, EOR is still a very challenging program to be implemented in Malaysia due to the offshore environment, formation characteristics, high investment cost, and expertise availability.  This talk shall focus on sharing the knowledge of what EOR is and the challenges of implementing it in Malaysia.

Ir. Razak Yakob was the Well Delivery Manager for the Enhanced Oil Recovery Centre (EORC) in 2012/2013. He was also the Senior Drilling Engineer for a Risk Service Contract Project in 2014/2015.  Razak has been in the oil and gas industry for 19 years working for companies such as ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Talisman Energy, Petronas Carigali and EQ Petroleum/Uzma Engineering.

His core expertise is in Drilling Engineering with the working experiences spanning from development and exploration, technical support, training, competency development, finance and consultancy. As an independent consultant, he has worked in many parts of the world. He was a graduate of Colorado School of Mines in the United States with a degree majoring in Petroleum Engineering and a minor in Mechanical Design.

My Technical Division will be arranging a Trip to visit Aker on the 5th May, 2016. It is worth some CPD points (don’t know why the page says 0).

Aker Solutions is a global provider of products, systems and services to the oil and gas industry. Their engineering design and technology bring discoveries into production and maximize recovery from each petroleum field. They employ approximately 15,000 people in 20 countries. Aker Solutions portfolio of oilfield stretches all the way from the reservoir to the wellstream processing systems generating marketable and valuable hydrocarbon products.

The Aker Solutions Manufacturing Centre in Port Klang assemble oil and gas production equipments and systems. Some of the items that have been manufactured are topsides process packages, subsea structures, subsea christmas tree, subsea control module, subsea wellheads, and drilling and production risers. In this visit, visitors will be able to learn how the manufacturing centre is operated and maintained.
