Veteran newsman tells Putrajaya to keep away from Petronas

September 28, 2014

We’ve had doctors leading the rakyat, why not the fifth estate?

Dateline 2014-07-14, MSN News:

A veteran newsman has cautioned Putrajaya against interfering with Petronas following the oil major’s success in moving up the ranks of the Fortune 500 list.

Datuk A. Kadir Jasin (pic), the former New Straits Times group editor-in-chief, said he hoped that Petronas, which ranked 69 on the list, would continue to be successful without any interference from the government.

“Our hope is that Petronas will continue to be successful without damaging interference from the government while dividends paid out to Putrajaya (RM27 billion last year) would be put to good use without wastage and leakages,” he wrote in his blog today.

From the New Straits Times – Kelantan to get RM20M in March

January 28, 2010

Taken from the New Straits Times, dateline 2010-01-27:

KOTA BAHARU: Kelantan will receive RM20 million as compassionate fund due under an oil and gas production arrangement in March.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the decision was made after discussions with the national oil corporation, Petronas, recently.

“It involves revenue from oil and gas production in the South Earth Platform, Block PM301, close to Kelantan waters. The RM20 million is five per cent of the total revenue from the block since May 2008,” he told reporters after opening a forum on the compassionate fund, here last night.

More than 5,000 people attended the forum.

Mustapa, who is also chairman of the Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee, said the Kelantan government”s claim for RM11 billion in oil royalty was extreme as the oil production was not that high.

From the NST – PETRONAS Promises to Spend

June 17, 2009

Dateline 2009-06-13, taken from the New Straits Times:

Hassan: No cutback in PETRONAS spending:

Petroliam National Bhd (PETRONAS) has not reduced any spending in the oil & gas sector, pledging a commitment of some RM35 billion for the exploration and production activities this year.

I think that PETRONAS might have held back a wee  bit on local crude brownfield debottlenecking and production enhancement projects since the beginning of this year, but that’s me. I actually missed their booth at this year’s OGA, and I sincerely apologise.

From the NST – OSK’s Crude Price Prediction

June 14, 2009

Dateline 2009-06-13, taken from the New Straits Times:

OSK expects oil to stabilise at US60.

OSK Research Sdn Bhd expects crude oil price to stabilise at US$60 (RM120) per barrel in the immediate term as there is no reason to justify the continuous price rise.

NST - OSK Oil Price Prediction

NST - OSK Oil Price Prediction

I’m all for oil to stabilise in the USD60-80 price range. That will allow pre-price crash projects to restart while not having a significant impact on gas prices, though I do hope that there will be an impetus to invest in energy saving innovations. Anyone know how to bring down the price of the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid?

Petrol Prices Drop in Malaysia

December 3, 2008

From the New Straits Times Online (change of loyalty here)

JOHOR BARU: Pump petrol prices will be further lowered before Hari Raya Aidiladha next week, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said yesterday.
He, however, declined to reveal the exact quantum of the price reduction, only saying that it would not be greater than the previous reduction of 15 sen per litre.

Shahrir was speaking at the closing of a business development seminar for traders and small enterprises at a hotel here.

The minister said there was a possibility that the price of diesel would be higher than that of petrol after the price revision.

“Now, we are facing an extraordinary situation, where diesel may be priced higher than petrol at the pump, and that’s the reason for the continued 43 sen subsidy for diesel as the price of diesel has become almost at par with petrol,” he said.

I’m curious when exactly gas prices will start following market prices.
