IEM Shout Out – Technical Safety Studies in O&G

July 21, 2010

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting a talk on the 31st July, 2010. It’ll be at 9:30 am (makan-makan at 9:00). You still gotta climb those steps at Wisma IEM.

One key element of an offshore oil & gas field development project is to demonstrate inherently safe design principles are adopted as part of the engineer design. A safety case lifecycle approach would ensure that the potential Major Accident Events (MAE) are identified, assessed and managed through the design process in order to demonstrate that risks have been reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and within the required tolerable limits.

(The Speaker) Ms Voon Jye Yng graduated from University of Kansas, USA in 1995 with a degree in Chem Eng (Environmental). Ms Voon is the Partner for Technical Risk and Safety Engineering with Environmental Resources Management (ERM).

The SOGE Story – Out and About in Miri

December 5, 2009

I’ve been in Miri for a week, attempting to address 97 HAZOP nodes in 5 days. As you can imagine, I couldn’t hit that target, though I did manage 60+ nodes.

Here are some photos of the Saberkas pasar malam. Yes, the theme is food.

Bintulu Onshore Gas Terminal

August 8, 2009

Synergy was invited to facilitate a HAZOP at Murphy’s Gas Plant (MGP) or Bintulu Onshore Gas Terminal (BOGT), I don’t know which is the formal name. The HAZOP went on smoothly enough, and I hope that the client was satisfied with execution and conclusions of the exercise, and invites us to facilitate their future risk assessment sessions.

New HAZOP Tool

November 27, 2008

I facilitated a HAZOP for Uzma on Sunday, 23rd November, 2008, in Kerteh Terengganu (yes, I was doing it under the Poyry ticket).

Anyhow, I found that the following tool is extremely useful in:

  • pointing out items on the projection screen.
  • Demonstrating heights and lengths.
  • Just feels cool.

I suggest using one about 4 1/2″ long, an inch thick.
