Malaysia’s probable and proven petroleum reserves at 6.9 billion barrels, about 61% in Sarawak, says Azalina

Malaysia’s probable and proven reserves of petroleum, which is indicated as its 2P reserves, totalled 6.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), of which 4.2 billion boe are in Sarawak, followed by 1.3 billion boe in Sabah.

Generally, 2P reserves have a more than 50% chance of being technically and economically possible to be produced.

The country’s petroleum reserves could last 15 years based on the reserves life index calculation, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

PTTEP appraising Malaysian discovery, eyes cluster development

Thailand’s national upstream company PTTEP has spudded the latest in a string of keenly watched exploration and appraisal wells offshore Malaysia where it is hoping to continue its success of late with the drill bit, firming up more hydrocarbons for a proposed cluster development.

Borr Drilling’s rig Gunnlod is drilling the Sirung-2 appraisal well located on Block SK 405B offshore Sarawak, East Malaysia.

The successful Sirung-1 wildcat that was spudded in January 2021 discovered both oil and gas.

Petronas has awarded Ping Petroleum two production sharing contracts (PSCs) for discovered oil and gas resources in Malaysia marking the company’s debut in its home country.

The first PSC is for the development and production of oil and gas resources in the Meranti cluster located 80 km offshore Kuala Terengganu. Ping Petroleum is the operator of the Meranti Cluster with 60% participating interest, while Duta Marine holds the remaining 40%.

Malaysia’s state-owned Petronas has awarded three oil and gas production-sharing contracts under its 2022 bidding round, as it looks to maximise the value of the country’s oil and gas resources.

The contracts, awarded under the Malaysia Bid Round (MBR) 2022, are for three clusters of discovered resource opportunities, Petronas said on 17 January. The A and Baram Junior clusters are located off the coast of Sarawak, Malaysia’s biggest oil-producing state, while the Meranti cluster is offshore peninsular Malaysia.

A former construction executive at Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB) has claimed trial at two separate Sessions Courts here to 43 counts of receiving bribes and money laundering amounting to more than RM6.1mil.

At the first court, 36-year-old Mohd Amal M. Razalan pleaded not guilty after 37 charges were read out before Sessions Court judge Rozina Ayob here on Wednesday (Jan 4).

It took about an hour for the court interpreter to read the charges under Section 16(a) (A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.


PTTEP finds more gas offshore Sarawak

PTTEP HK Offshore has discovered sweet gas off Sarawak with the Paprika-1 well in Block SK410B.

Drilling started last July, with the well reaching a total depth of 3,348 m after encountering gas pay in clastic reservoirs.

The company and partners KUFPEC and Petronas Carigali previously proved gas in the Lang Lebah structure on the same block.
