About half of new gas resources to be kept as feedstock, says Sarawak CM

About 40℅ to 50% of new findings of gas resources in Sarawak must be retained as feedstock for gas- related industries in the state, Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said today.

He said this was to ensure Sarawak had sufficient gas feedstock to drive downstream activities of the natural gas industries in Sarawak, particularly the petrochemical industries.

Abang Johari announced this during the launch of Sarawak’s first methanol plant – Sarawak Petchem – at Tanjung Kidurong in Bintulu here, today.

Sapura-OMV venture expects East Malaysian gas field output by year-end

A joint venture between Malaysia’s Sapura Energy and Austrian energy group OMV will achieve first production at an East Malaysian gas field in the fourth quarter of the year, the business said on Friday.

SapuraOMV, the joint venture, holds a 40 percent stake in the SK408 block, while a unit of Malaysian state energy company Petronas and a subsidiary of Shell hold 30 percent each.

Peak production from the block will be achieved by 2023, SapuraOMV’s chief executive, Muhammad Zamri Jusof, told reporters.

Malaysia’s PrefChem offers gasoil cargo for September

Malaysia’s Pengerang Refining and Petrochemical (PrefChem), a joint venture between Petronas and Saudi Aramco, has offered 300,000 barrels of gasoil for a mid-September loading, two industry sources said on Wednesday.

The cargo would load Sept. 12-14, the Singapore-based sources said, with the tender closing on Wednesday.

This is one of the first gasoil cargoes coming out of PrefChem, trade sources said, after the refinery restarted a crude distillation unit (CDU) last month.

In Sabah, doubts linger as Putrajaya’s MA63 review accused of being one-sided affair

Sabahans remain unconvinced of Putrajaya’s sincerity in reviewing the Malaysia Agreement 1963, with concerns that the terms of the review being a one-sided affair.

Noting that discussions are still ongoing, political observers say that it is imperative that talks prioritise the 40 per cent return of revenue from the state, and deal with the thorny issue of oil and gas ownership.

Petronas’ role in the larger economy

PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is set to announce its second-quarter (2Q) financial results soon. The performance of Malaysia’s most profitable company will be watched eagerly by the market and its sole shareholder — the government.

As the state-owned energy company is the nerve centre of the country’s oil and gas sector, Petronas’ financial performance is critical to the wider economy. It is after all the most successful company based on revenues, profits and other financials. It is also celebrating its 45th birthday this year.

Indicators suggest Petronas’ listed downstream businesses would influence its overall profit, despite the average global oil price not tumbling to the dismal levels of January 2016.

Its upstream business, which accounts for about 55% of the group’s revenue, had been averaging at US$65 (RM273) a barrel level for the Brent contract from April to June this year, compared to above US$70 in the corresponding period last year.

Exit Malaysia, GPS urged after data on Sarawak oil and gas reserves denied

Petronas has no right to keep the Sarawak government in the dark about the amount of oil and gas reserves in Sarawak, Parti Bumi Kenyalang president Voon Lee Shan said.

He said this following Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg’s claim that Petronas had refused to disclose any data or information on the state’s oil and gas reserve to the state government.

Perak natural gas project to be completed mid-2020

About 77 percent of Perak’s natural gas pipeline project, which stretches for 140 km from Ayer Tawar, Manjung to Lembah Kinta has been completed, and is expected to be ready by the middle of next year.

Gas Malaysia Bhd chief executive officer Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap said so far, six factories in Perak had benefited from the project.

“We hope to get up to 40 industry customers. The most important thing is the completion of the project,” he told a press conference during a visit to Nihon Canpack (M) Sdn Bhd’s factory here, today.

My technical division (and others) will be hosting a visit on the 2nd November, 2019.

Lynas Corporation Ltd is an Australian Stock Exchange 200 listed company. Its strategy is to create a reliable, fully integrated source of Rare Earths from mine through to market, and to become the benchmark for the security of supply and environmental standards in the global Rare Earths industry. Rare Earths are moderately abundant group of 15 metallic elements known as the Lanthanide series. Sabah’s gas, oil boost the GDP

Production from natural gas fields mostly off East Malaysia and the East Coast of West Malaysia is boosting the country’s GDP into the second quarter of 2019.
Stronger mining output came mainly from higher natural gas production which rose 13pc year-on-year in June, 2019, being the end point of the first quarter of 2019 (+7.6pc year-on-year in May).
This compensated for the poor output in crude oil which dropped -3.7pc year-on-year in June, (-2pc year-on-year in May).
Natural gas output has been in the positive since March while mining crude oil production has been in the negative growth trajectory since January 2019.
