IAEA team to review Malaysia’s nuclear energy infrastructure

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts will be in the country next week to conduct the first Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR), says Malaysia Nuclear Power Corp (MNPC) CEO Mohd Zamzam Jaafar.

He said the 12 experts, mostly from the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, would review Malaysia’s state of preparedness for nuclear energy development, from Oct 10 to 17.

“Malaysia is almost there (for nuclear energy development) but there are still certain things that need to be done,” he said, adding they included the tabling of a nuclear energy bill and identifying a site for the nuclear energy programme.

Mohd Zamzam told a media briefing here yesterday that the outcome of Malaysia’s INIR review would be out by year-end, and was optimistic it would be a positive review.

He said Malaysia had also submitted its self-assesment to IAEA, with all the necessary documents, in May this year.

On nuclear programme awareness in Malaysia, Mohd Zamzam said most Malaysians had negative impression when they hear the word ‘nuclear’.

“MNPC will conduct education programmes to spread information on nuclear energy for power generation,” he said, adding that, currently, nuclear energy in Malaysia was only used in the medical and agricultural sectors.

MNPC, he said, forecast that Malaysia would only be able to have its own nuclear programme for energy generating purposes after 2030.

Bondholders in quandary as oil prices drop

Were there O&G unit trusts issued during the good times?

As the drop in oil prices leaves more companies in the industry starving for cash, bondholders and lenders are beginning to feel the pain.

And bondholders are seeking action to ensure they do not lose out.

According to a Bloomberg report, a group of bondholders last week issued a notice of acceleration on SD125 million of bonds sold by Malaysian oil services company Perisai Petroleum Teknologi Bhd.

Also last week, dozens of bondholders gathered outside a trustee’s office in Singapore to deliver a demand for immediate payment on S$100 million of notes issued by shipping trust Rickmers Maritime.

Bloomberg said Perisai didn’t reply to two e-mails seeking comment on its plan to defer its bond repayment by four months, which was rejected by bondholders on Monday.

Perisai’s 6.875 per cent notes were at 55 cents.

“Yes, it’s our responsibility that we bought the bonds but the company can’t just brush us aside,” bondholder Cheng Fong Kiew was quoted as saying after rejecting the plan.

Syed Azman: T’ganu should emulate S’wak

A Terengganu lawmaker, inspired by Sarawak’s push for a larger share of oil and gas royalties, is embarking on a signature drive to get his state a better deal for its resources.

Speaking to FMT, Batu Burok Assemblyman Syed Azman Ahmad said Terengganu needed to emulate Sarawak and beckon the Federal Government and Petronas to the discussion table.

Sarawak’s push for greater state rights, especially those pertaining to oil and gas, has been a cornerstone of Adenan Satem’s tenure as Chief Minister of the state.

Syed Azman said Terengganu had been shortchanged since 2000, when the five per cent oil royalty it used to get was withdrawn and replaced with the so-called “wang ehsan” provided by Putrajaya.

McDermott, TH Heavy Engineering dissolve partnership

Houston-based McDermott International and Malaysian fabrication firm TH Heavy Engineering (THHE) will end their Malaysian joint ventures Berlian McDermott (BMD) and THHE Fabricators (THF), the pair announced on Friday (23 September), citing local market conditions.

The proposal will see both THHE and McDermott trade interests in the joint ventures to the other. For example, THHE will transfer its 30% interest in BMD to McDermott, while McDermott will transfer its 30% stake in THF to THHE. Each transfer was valued at US$17.33 million (MYR 71.73 million).

Malaysia as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has enjoyed a longstanding and mutually beneficial partnership with the agency in the application of peaceful uses of nuclear technology for socio-economic development.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Nancy Shukri said IAEA played a vital role in promotion of peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology in helping member states closer to achieving developmental goals and priorities.

“As a member of IAEA since 1969, Malaysia is intensifying its role and contribution to global peace, security and development from being a recipient country to sharing its expertise and experiences with other countries,” she said while attending the 60th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Overview of Centrifugal Pump Basic Principles: The Theory and Application 2016-11

My technical division will be hosting a talk seminar on the 12th Novembe , 2016. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Hassanazhari Ahdi.

OVERVIEW OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMP BASIC PRINCIPLES: THE THEORY AND APPLICATION shall provide the audience with the knowledge and principles of pump design, sizing, selection and performance analysis. The talk will explore the overview of basic theory and the application of the pump in the industry. The talk will be beneficial to engineers dealing with pump and will be presented in a way that is comprehensible to the engineers who are with or without the oil and gas background. The objectives of the talk are to provide exposure to the audiences on understanding of fundamental design of centrifugal pump and impact on its application.

Centrifugal pump in the oil and gas industry is a ‘must equipment’ on every plant/site and talk will answer questions that many people have, such as how important this equipment onboard, understanding the requirement and criticality of the pump within the whole system and matching those to the correct pump selection. Some highlights of the talk are back to fundamental of mathematical modeling of the centrifugal pump on various aspects of its parameters, type and material selection. These are the major factors in ensuring the selected pump match the required performance as well as the ensuring the reliability of the pump.

Ir. Hassanazhari Ahdi has been in the oil and gas industry for 25 years working for companies such as Technip, TPVN, KPOC and SDE. His core expertise is in design works, erection, testing, hook-up and commissioning.  Currently, he is an independent consultant providing consultancy for various design office. He was a graduate of University of Malaya with a degree in Mechanical and Masters in Engineering from UTM. He has served many major Oil and Gas Company local and abroad such as PETRONAS, SHELL, EXXON-MOBIL, QATAR PETROLEUM, QATAR MEARSK OIL, TOTAL, CONOCO-PHILIPSs and CUU LONG.

His experience covers several major onshore/offshore of turnkey project started from proposal, FEED, detailed design, erection, pre-commissioning/commissioning until handover to operation. Projects involved such as Polyethylene Plant, PVC Plant, Cabot Semi-Scale plant, BP-Amoco PTA Plant, MOQ BG-BA Platform, KPOC Platform etc. Beside green field his experience covers brown field too on retrofitting, debottlenecking of offshore platform and onshore plant.

He has delivered lecture for Executive Diploma student at UTM covering mechanical discipline which syllabus tailored to specific application to oil and gas industries.

MOGSEC offers good platform for O&G firms to showcase products, services

If you parse the sentence incorrectly, you wonder why Sharifah is called the First Lady. Is her husband Mr. President now?

Since it was first held in 2012, the Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Exhibition and Conference (MOGSEC) has become a prominent showcase for the local oil and gas (O&G) industry.

Jointly organised by Malaysian Oil and Gas Services Council (MOGSC) and Malaysian Exhibition Services Sdn Bhd, the third edition of the exhibition this year promises another excellent platform for local products and services providers to showcase their capabilities.

The event will also demonstrate the country’s strategic position as a hub for O&G services.

MOGSC first lady president Sharifah Zaida Nurlisha said MOGSEC 2016 is an excellent platform for those in the industry to update themselves on technological front as it will showcase local and home-based expertise, products and services from service providers in the oil, gas and energy industries.

Marketing Rounds – Write Up from an Intern

I got one of my interns to write up their experiences with IGL. The following is posted verbatim:

I believe that everything that happens in our life, happens for a good reason. After applying for a few companies and not getting a positive reply, I received an email from Ir.Razmahwata who is the director of IGL Services Sdn Bhd. I was thrilled and thankful that I have finally secured a place for my internship. Many of my friends discouraged me from joining a small company since we will get a smaller allowance..haha..:) But for me personally, internship is not about earning money, it’s about earning valuable experiences. Therefore, I accepted Ir.Razmahwata’s offer. Just like many other students, I was really nervous thinking whether I will be able to adapt to the real working environment. However, the moment I entered my office, I was welcomed by Ir.Razmahwata with a pleasant smile followed by my other colleagues. I took around a week to adapt my new atmosphere. I learnt how to work under stress, multitask, the importance of communication skills, responsibility but I also learnt that the most important criteria for a successful person is the right attitude. Right attitude is extremely important not only because it will make people really comfortable being around us but it also enables us to learn new things in life easily.

Being an intern in IGL Service Sdn Bhd has been a great experience for me. This is because the employees were really friendly with each and other and they were always willing to help each and other even when they are busy. I was really impressed with each one of them who were always willing to guide me and correct me when I am wrong. Moreover, Ir.Razmahwata has been a great inspiration to me. The desire to become a successful engineer grew stronger after talking to him and listening to his advice. Furthermore, all IGL Service Sdn Bhd employees consider themselves as a part of a big family. This has made my internship in IGL Service Sdn Bhd more fun and interactive. I will definitely miss being an intern in IGL Services Sdn Bhd because it has given me so many beautiful memories to be cherished for a lifelong.

Even though saying thank you is not enough to describe my gratitude towards IGL Services Sdn Bhd, I would still  want to thank Ir.Razmahwata for accepting me as an intern in the company and guiding me and thank you very much to all my colleagues who accepted me as a part of IGL family. IGL Services Sdn Bhd has made my internship experience really valuable and great.
