Tales from the Engineering Floor – Government, Please Take my Money

May 28, 2009

Synergy‘s registered with the Custom Department as an entity collecting service tax. So, we want pay service tax this month (May, 2009), as to be good corporate citizens.

We review the payment instructions, which are different on the website and on the printed sheet. The website states that the Department will only accept the following methods of payment:

  • cash;
  • postal or money orders;
  • cheques or bank drafts

Now, what is annoying is that the hard copy instruction say that if we are to submit a cheque, a bank guarantee is required. Not quite believing this, we went down to the offices (which for us is located way in Kelang), where we are stopped from submitting our service tax payment because the check did not come with a bank guarantee.

Exsqueeze me? We are trying to pay the Customs Department, but they refuse to take our Company cheque because it is not gauranteed? Where’s the logic in that? If the cheque bounces, it will cause more trouble to us then to them.

  • Ah, here’s one for all those graduates out there. Ensco Gerudi is looking for a trainee. Send an email here or snail mail to Ensco Gerudi (M) Snd Bhd, 5th Floor, Bangunan Angkasa Raya, Jalan Ampang, 50450 KL (attn: Ravi Amsadi, Administration Manager).

  • Talisman in looking for a Piping / Mech Engineer. Apply here, and visit their site.

Wow, looks like the O&G industry is picking up, though most of these job are for the senior engineer.

Sigh, since I have moved with Synergy out of KL, will you patronise Chee Meng in my memory? Or invite me to meetings around Bukit Bintang at lunchtime? Is he doing packet specials?

First Time – Firefly to Kerteh

May 22, 2009

This week, I took my first flight on a Firefly flight to Kerteh. Not bad, I left on the 6:30am (red eye!) from Subang and returned on the 6:20pm. Managed to get a whole day’s worth of work in there.

One amusing thing I saw was when we were deboarding the aircraft. The stewardess solidly plants herself halfway down the aisle, and allows the rear seating passagers to debark via the back door (there is no front exit) before letting the front seating passengers depart. I guess they are afraid of tipping over the plane if the front passengers left the plane first?

Also, cargo is stored between the cockpit and the passeger aisle. Again, weighing down the front of the plane to prevent tip tipping back.

The flight schedule follows the former MHS charted flight, with 2 flights a day, and no flights Friday, Saturday or Sunday, though rumour has it that this will change soon.

I’d get Firefly to tie up with the local Kerteh hotels, and package the flight and hotel ala Berjaya.

Also, when they going to sponsor Kampung Kuantan?

From the Star – RM3.54m for CTI fund

May 16, 2009

Dateline 2009-05-16 (story link here):

MANADO: Malaysia will contribute US$1mil (RM3.54mil) to the Coral Triangle Initiative which aims to save the marine life in the region’s seas, dubbed the “Amazon of the oceans.”
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that although Malaysia was only a small part of the Coral Triangle, it supported regional programmes to protect, preserve and sustainably exploit its marine resources.
“We also support Indonesia’s offer to host the CTI secretariat,” he told Malaysian reporters covering the CTI Summit in the North Sulawesi capital yesterday.

Wind Turbines on Perhentian Island – Update

Remember those wind turbines I mentioned last year? Unfortunately, they have stopped working. Someone please tell me that this was a commercial venture, and didn’t use my marine park entrance fee.
