Appraisal drilling starts offshore Malaysia at Balai Cluster

BC Petroleum Sdn Bhd has begun the pre-development phase appraisal drilling on the Balai Cluster risk service contract offshore Malaysia.

The first well, Bentara 2 in Bentara field is underway with a planned TD of 2,750 m (9,022 ft).

The Balai Cluster RSC consists of four fields: Balai, Bentara, West Acis, and Spaoh. The pre-development phase is expected to be completed by Q2 2013.

On successful completion of the pre-development phase and agreement on the economic viability of the fields, BCP will submit a field development plan.

Good times ahead for SapuraKencana: HwangDBS

SapuraKencana Petroleum Bhd, which will be busy tendering for jobs by Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) these few months, is set to secure new fabrication and marginal field contracts in the second half of this year, HwangDBS Vickers Research Sdn Bhd said.

“Contracts in the pipeline include the Pan Malaysia hook-up commissioning jobs worth RM10 billion and Petronas’ inspection, repair and maintenance contract, which may be worth up to RM800 million, as well as fabrication projects at the Samarang, Dulang and Bokor platforms worth over RM3 billion,” the research firm said in a report yesterday.

“(Additionally,) Petronas is expected to award two risk service contracts for the Tembikai and Cenang marginal fields near Block PM314 off the peninsula and the award of these contracts, possibly by the fourth quarter of 2012, could be a catalyst,” said HwangDBS.

HwangDBS believes that SapuraKencana is a top contender to bag major contracts from Petronas as it is the only player in the country that offers the full spectrum of services across the oil and gas (O&G) value chain.

Kelantan state exco Husam Musa has claimed that plans are afoot to build pipes to channel oil resources extracted from Bunga Kamelia zone in Kelantan to Kemaman in Terengganu.

Husam said starting next year, national oil giant Petronas would land gas in Terengganu, after extracting it from Block PM301 in Bunga Kamelia zone, which falls under Kelantan’s territory.

IEM Shout Out – Talk on Green Energy Potential in the Palm Oil Industry

This is a shout out for the IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division (know as CETD to friends) will be having a talk on Saturday, 6th October, 2011.

The Palm Oil industry in Malaysia had attracted much negative publicity mostly from European NGOs on the issue of sustainability. As part of the measure to mitigate this issue, the Malaysian Government is encouraging the Palm Oil industry to reduce its carbon footprint.

Therefore all Mills in Malaysia are encouraged to convert the palm oil mill effluent into biogas by 2020. Conventional biogas technology had been around for more than 20 years but with the world’s energy prices going higher and with the Malaysian Government’s Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) program, there is a need to develop higher efficiency Biogas system.

Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors is a fairly new development around the world and recently these anaerobic membrane bioreactors (An-MBR) had been used for the first time in the world for treating palm oil wastewater. As a result, more difficult processes such as thermophilic digestion with An-MBR system can become a reality and it had resulted in superior biogas yield. Through the latest technology, the green energy from the Mill can be harvested and potentially converted into other form of fuel.

As for the speaker:

Mr. B. P. Chow is a Chemical Engineering graduate from the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) as well as a Chartered Engineer. Presently he is the Deputy Chairman of IChemE Malaysia and the Managing Director of Aquakimia Sdn. Bhd. He had more than 34 years of working experience primarily in the Palm Oil, Water & Wastewater business. He had been instrumental in bringing the Kubota Membrane Bioreactor technology from Japan to use local engineering to adapt it for the Palm Oil Industry

Oil-rich Sabah still the poorest

The oil royalty re-negotiations which both Sabah and Sarawak chief ministers have suddenly agreed to would have to take into account history and the actual numbers earned by Petronas and the federal government.

It is vital that the leaders go into these discussions with Putrajaya knowing the true facts of the agreement and the events leading up to how both states were “coerced” into signing the agreements.

If I recall correctly, Sarawak commenced its oil production in the early 1900s. Sabah has been producing oil for 30 years now.

Gas Malaysia: 80% of gas taken up, additional volume to be delivered via extended pipeline

Gas Malaysia Bhd has officially secured contracts for more than 80% of the additional natural gas volume that is coming on stream next year.

Gas Malaysia managing director Datuk Muhammad Noor Hamid said most of the 40 million standard cu ft per day (mmscfd) increased allocation by Petronas next year had been allocated for new customers and existing ones that were undertaking expansion of their facilities.

“The volume of gas is just waiting to be delivered via our extended pipeline. Some of the pipelines are in the midst of construction while some are in the design process. The target is to make sure we complete these pipelines as quickly as possible so that when the gas become available by Jan 1, we can deliver it to our customers,” he told StarBiz.

Labuan-based ASB Eyes O&G Sector In Sabah

Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd, a Sabah Government subsidiary, is eyeing opportunities in Sabah’s oil and gas industry particularly in Sipitang.

Chief Executive Officer Datuk Harris Tan said the business expansion to the Sabah mainland is in line with ASB’s diversification plan to become a major player in a highly competitive industry.

He said ASB is moving in the right direction to cater to the region’s increasingly active oil and gas industry.

“The company also has the capability and competency to support vessels such as fast crew boats, anchor handling tugs and multi-purpose vessels.

“Not only that, ASB has all the requirements to contribute to Malaysia’s aspiration to be a deepwater hub in this region.

WGC 2012: showcasing the global gas industry

Every three years the World Gas Conference, hosted by the International Gas Union, is held to share findings from the previous research triennium and bring world leaders, executives and specialists together. The 25th World Gas Conference was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 5–9 June 2012, with the theme Gas: Sustaining Future Global Growth.

Since 1931 the International Gas Union (IGU) has promoted the technical and economic progress of the gas industry all over the world and is regarded as the most influential independent non-profit organisation serving as spokesman for the global gas industry.

The conference presented a staggering collection of ideas, experience and networking and was attended by 5,300 people from 90 countries, representing over 95 per cent of the global gas market. In addition over 13,800 people came to the exhibition to visit 220 exhibiting companies. Walking through the exhibition gave you a taste of each company’s capabilities and projects, amongst the largest in the world, as well as their national customs.
