IEM Shout Out – Strategic Management Thinking Process

May 6, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a talk on the 9th May by Ir. Benjamin Ng Chong Jin. It’ll be at 9:00 am (makan-makan at 8:30) at Wisma IEM. That’s right people, as part of the new health drive you are required to walk up 3 flights of stairs to get your 2 CPD points.

This talk draws attention to the fuel diversification in a power market (e.g. Malaysia) and the different fuels which determine the fuel specific electricity tariff. The talk aims to shed lights on how a regulated market’s electricity tariff is being computed with respect to the different type of power plant technologies from oil-fired power plant to combined-cycle power plant to coal-fired power plant. Each power plant technology has its advantages in supporting the electricity grid and also its drawbacks. This will be elaborated in the talk.

Ir. Benjamin Ng Chong Jin is the Loss Prevention Consultant at FM Global Insurance specializing in power generation market. He has been involved in numerous power plants development from conceptualizing, financial modeling, tendering and design evaluation when he was in one of the IPP’s in Malaysia. He has been technically trained in a reputable Gas Turbine manufacturer and has good commissioning experiences. Ir. Benjamin Ng holds a Bachelor (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2003. He is also a Professional Engineer (Mechanical) registered with BEM, a Corporate Member of IEM and a certified accountant with ACCA.

Register for the event here, and download the flyer here.

Shout Out – One-Day Seminar On Drilling Engineering

May 5, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a seminar on the 19th May, 2015. It’ll start at 9:00 and is worth 6.5 CPD hours, presented by Ir. Razak Yakob.

Ir. (you gotta stress the Ir.) Hj. (even worse, you gotta spell it out) Razak Yakob has been in the oil and gas industry for 19 years working for companies such as ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Talisman Energy, Petronas Carigali and EnQuest/Uzma Engineering. His core expertise is in Drilling Engineering with the working experience spans from development and exploration, technical support, training, finance and consultancy. As a consultant, he has worked in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Algeria and others. Currently, he is an independent consultant. He was a graduate of Colorado School of Mines in the United States with a degree majoring in Petroleum Engineering and a minor in Mechanical Design.

Drilling discipline in the oil and gas industry tends to be seen as the hard-core engineering and operations in the hostile environment that many potential engineers avoid tapping into. This one-day overview course shall try to answer some of the questions that many people have, such as how is the drilling operations conducted, what is it like to be a drilling engineer and those jargons – what are they talking about? The design process explanation shall take you from the Conceptual Design, Detailed Design and Final Design stages. Some highlights of the course are designing the well trajectory, directional design, casing design, drilling fluids formulation, cementing formulation, perforation, securing and completing the well to ensure that production (oil & gas) reaches the surface safely. This course has been offered by IEM annually since 2008.

Register here or download the form here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.

IEM Shout Out – Conversion of Organic Wastes and Unused Biomass to Valuable Materials and Energy Using Sub-Critical Water

April 29, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division (know as CETD to friends) will be having a talk on Wed afternoon, 6th May, 2015, by Dr. Hiroyuki Yoshida .

Dr. Hiroyuki Yoshida obtained B. Eng. Degree in 1969 and Dr. Eng. in 1977 in Chemical Engineering from Osaka Prefecture University, Japan. He worked for this University from 1974 to 2013. He became a professor in 1995. From 2013, he has been working for Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UPM as a contract professor.

Sub-Critical water is high temperature and high pressure water but lower than those of critical points (647 K, 22.1 MPa). It shows three typical characteristics. Firstly, sub-critical water (sub-CW) has a great hydrolysis power at around 520 K and organic solids quickly decompose into low-molecular-weight valuable materials. Secondly, sub-CW works as a strong solvent and can extract oil almost perfectly at once. Thirdly, when the temperature is higher than about 600 K, hydrolysis power becomes small and pyrolysis power becomes great. The pyrolysis reaction can convert organics to liquid oil (alternative heavy crude oil) and/or solid char.

Tales from the Engineering Floor – Cheesecake Diagram

April 29, 2015

In the safety scam, there are things such as a layers of protection diagram:

The idea is that a cause or hazard leads to a consequence only if all the layers fail. This is visually shown in a Swiss cheese diagram:

This is the Cheesecake diagram:

Though, some items are the same:

  1. There are layers
  2. If one layer is defective, it may not affect the overall facility
  3. If all layers are defective, go get your money back.
  4. Don’t do technical safety while hungry.

Which do you prefer?

IEM Shout Out – Half Day Course on Incorporating CDIO (TM) framework through Project based learning (PBL)

April 28, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be having a course on 13th May, presented by Ir Assoc. Prof. Dr. Satesh Namasivayam . It’ll be at 9am at Wisma IEM.

Ready to engineer. So it is said. But what is engineer and how do you engineer? What are the barriers to engineer and what are the key factors necessary to educate engineer? How to think like an engineer? Incorporating CDIOTM framework through Project based learning (PBL) can be one of the solutions. The CDIOTM initiative has been developing as more collaborators from all over the globe are taking this initiative as a base for their educational institutions adopting what so-called the “active learning” policy which includes, but not limited to, a complete system of a well-designed syllabus covering the skills and characteristics of graduating engineers.

Throughout CDIOTM phases, the learning process has changed from passive-note taking to more active-project-based education. This half-day workshop is designed with three (3) objectives as follows

  • Introduce participants to Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate initiative
  • Integrate CDIO initiative in curriculum to address complex, value added engineering products, processes, systems in modern and team-based environment;
  • Review the know-how of conceiving, designing, implementing and operating complex engineering systems of appropriate complexity.

Ir Assoc Prof Dr. Satesh Namasivayam BEng (1st Class Hons) PhD (London) FIMechE MIEM CEng PEng CIT (HRDF) is a Chartered and Professional Mechanical Engineer, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Deputy Dean from the School of Engineering at Taylor’s University, Malaysia.
