IEM Shout Out – 2017-11 Two Day Course on Integrating Operational Perspective for Cohesive Design of Plant And Building Facilities

My technical division will be hosting a 2 day course on the 25th and 26th October 2017. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Danaraj Chandrasegaran and Ir. Al-Khairi Mohd Daud.

Systematic approaches are elaborated in this course during early design phase to create better solutions and reducing modification works throughout the facilities life. This two-day course is designed to help you develop skills that will enhance your engineering delivery to your project and improving the human part of it.

As a great deal of class time will be spent in a variety of interactive formats, active participation is essential

Ir. Danaraj Chandrasegaran P.Eng MIEM CEng MIMechE. He is a Chartered Engineer and has honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Technology Malaysia. He also holds a MEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Malaya. He also presently a committee member with The Institution of Engineers Malaysia and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (UK) Malaysia Chapter.

Since starting his career as a Mechanical Engineer, Ir. Danaraj has had a varied service; both in front line project execution as well as in technical, training, and management functions. His career has a diverse outlook on project execution ranging from building construction, marine, mining and energy industry; as a mechanical engineer. He has worked on several large-scale projects worldwide such as Shell Malikai TLP and Barzan Offshore Project. In addition, had delivered many projects successfully collaborating with vendors and subcontractors alike.

Ir. Al-Khairi Mohd Daud P.Eng, PEM, C Eng, CPSI, MIEM, MMEPA, MMSQH, REEM has nearly 25 years of engineering experience in both project and maintenance of various plants and facilities such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants, petrochemical and oleo chemical plants, manufacturing, high end R&D and medical centre facilities. Amongst his accomplishment was the development, testing & commissioning and operation of InventQjaya Sdn Bhd, an advance research facilities in Cyberjaya and Prince Court Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (PCMC) a 300-bed hospital owned by PETRONAS. Due to this experience, Ir Al-Khairi has been appointed as certified surveyor and trainer with Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH). He has contributed to the drafting of MSQH standard 5th Edition 2016. He is also being appointed to Medical Device Authority (MDA) competencies expert panels, authorized engineer and trainer on Medical Gas Piping System (MGPS). In energy efficiency, Ir Al-Khairi is the country expert for ASEAN Energy Management Accreditation Scheme (AEMAS) where he is the chief assessor and trainer for the program. He is also a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) with NRPA, USA.

Ir Al-Khairi is a member with Institute of Asset Management, UK. He is the past Chairman for Oil, Gas & Mining Technical Division and a member of Building Services Technical Division for the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). He is the Chief Consultant for Faqeh Management, a company that he formed to provide asset, facilities and energy management. He has conducted various facilities and energy audit for airports, offices buildings, healthcare facilities, manufacturing, process plants. He is also involved as data center planner and assessors.

The dilemma of fuel dealers

Dateline 2017-06-30, Sinchew:

Following the introduction of weekly ceiling fuel pricing mechanism, coupled with the continuously falling retail prices — the fifth straight fall this week — many petrol dealers in the country are suffering losses, and they hope the government will do something to help them out of the current doldrums.

There are a total of 3,500 gas stations in the country, but since the government abolished fuel subsidies and implemented the weekly floating pricing policy, many of them begin to encounter difficulty in sustaining their businesses.

From what we know, since the monthly ceiling fuel pricing mechanism was introduced in 2014, some 30 to 40 petrol stations have wound up their businesses. With the implementation of weekly pricing, more are expected to go under. Some 80 petrol stations have already closed down during the last two years and the dealers are worried more will do so if fuel prices keep dropping.

Among the reasons for the closures are minimum wage scheme, rising energy cost, 1% credit card fee, low commissions and falling oil prices.

Oil supply and demand has been out of balance for some time now for a number of reasons, including some major domestic oil users switching to a heavier reliance on natural gas, and increases in oil production in some regions. IEM Shout Out – 2017-08 Precision Engineering For Higher Value-Added Industrial Products

My technical division will be hosting a half day seminar on the 5th August, 2017. It is worth 3 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Professor R. C. T. Lee.

In this seminar, we shall first emphasize the importance of industry to economy of a nation.  We will then point out that Taiwan is facing tough challenging from China and we must upgrade our industry to the “precision industry”.  By precision industry, we mean products in such an industry are of high specification.   In other words, ordinary turn key industries will not survive in Taiwan at all.  But, to reach the sophisticated state, we must build a solid foundation on basic industrial technologies.  These technologies include mixing and dispersing, separation and purification, machine design, electronic circuit design, material science, grinding technology, soldering technology, software, control and so on.  We will present many cases to show how these basic industrial technologies help us produce industrial products with high added values.

Professor R. C. T. Lee obtained his B. S. degree in electrical engineering from the National Taiwan University in 1961, M. S, degree in electrical engineering from University of California at Berkeley in 1963 and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering and computer science, also from U. C. Berkeley in 1967.  He worked in National Institutes of Health and Naval Research Laboratory in U.S.A. from 1967 to 1975. He returned to Taiwan in 1975 and was appointed a professor in the National Tsing Hua University.  Later, he was the President of Providence University as well as the President of National Chi-nan University.  Professor Lee formally retired in 2007.  Then he served as a senior adviser of the President for seven years.  He managed to persuade the Taiwanese government to pay attention to the basic industrial technologies, founded the Taiwan Society for Precision Engineering in 2014 and served as the chairman of the society for two years.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-07 Talk On Implementation of conceive-design-implement-operate (CDIO TM) framework for Chemical Engineering challenges

My technical division will be hosting a talk on the 26th July, 2017. It is worth 2 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The talk will be presented by Ir. Dr. Chong.

The conceive – design – implement – operate (CDIOTM) framework is implemented by educators to generate graduates, who are able to tackle complex engineering challenges. A set of 12 standards define this framework and how to implement it are useful for chemical engineers. Chemical engineers from the industry will be able to develop sustainable solutions using the structured framework. Several chemical engineering innovative projects are completed using the CDIOTM framework will be shared during the talk.

Medical Gas Piping System (MGPS) is required to deliver medical gasses supply to patients and surgical tools in hospitals. The medical gasses include oxygen, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, Entonox, medical vacuum, anesthetic gas scavenging system, medical and surgical air. Since the gasses are delivered direct to patients the quality and reliability of the system is very important to ensure the live of the patients and the safety of the facilities.

Ir. Dr. Chong obtained his BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) in 2007 and  PhD in Engineering from University of Nottingham. He also is a Chartered Engineer in UK and a Professional Engineer of Board of Engineers, Malaysia. He received President Award of Excellent from IEM for four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. He also bagged the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award as ‘Taylor’s Most Cited Academic 2015’. His scholarly activities encompass leading research projects, spearheading academic collaboration with leading academic institution both in Malaysia and in the world. In his brief academic career, he published more than 50  international journals, conferences papers, technical bulletin/proceedings and book chapters. He is one of the CDIOTM leaders in Asia Region. His academic research interest is in the area of drying technology, energy, health and engineering education.
