September 30, 2012IEM Shout Out – Talk on Green Energy Potential in the Palm Oil Industry
September 29, 2012This is a shout out for the IEM. The Chemical Engineering Technical Division (know as CETD to friends) will be having a talk on Saturday, 6th October, 2011.
The Palm Oil industry in Malaysia had attracted much negative publicity mostly from European NGOs on the issue of sustainability. As part of the measure to mitigate this issue, the Malaysian Government is encouraging the Palm Oil industry to reduce its carbon footprint.
Therefore all Mills in Malaysia are encouraged to convert the palm oil mill effluent into biogas by 2020. Conventional biogas technology had been around for more than 20 years but with the world’s energy prices going higher and with the Malaysian Government’s Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) program, there is a need to develop higher efficiency Biogas system.
Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors is a fairly new development around the world and recently these anaerobic membrane bioreactors (An-MBR) had been used for the first time in the world for treating palm oil wastewater. As a result, more difficult processes such as thermophilic digestion with An-MBR system can become a reality and it had resulted in superior biogas yield. Through the latest technology, the green energy from the Mill can be harvested and potentially converted into other form of fuel.
As for the speaker:
Mr. B. P. Chow is a Chemical Engineering graduate from the University of Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) as well as a Chartered Engineer. Presently he is the Deputy Chairman of IChemE Malaysia and the Managing Director of Aquakimia Sdn. Bhd. He had more than 34 years of working experience primarily in the Palm Oil, Water & Wastewater business. He had been instrumental in bringing the Kubota Membrane Bioreactor technology from Japan to use local engineering to adapt it for the Palm Oil Industry
Water pinch sounds interesting. Please come along, and partake of the food (both intellectual and physical).

APH a test of foreign ownership of local assets
September 28, 2012Dateline 2012-09-14:
THE Asia Petroleum Hub (APH) fiasco is proving to be a huge problem for the government where foreign ownership of local assets is concerned.
Ports, telecommunications spectrum, airlines and, in some cases, banks are considered critical assets in Malaysia as in other countries and should therefore be in the control of local companies.
A switch in ownership to foreigners, if not handled well, can have serious repercussions for the government. For a case in point, look at the infamous sale of telecommunications company Shin Corp to Singapore’s Temasek Holdings, which cost the then Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra his job.
Be that as it may, Asia Petroleum Hub Sdn Bhd (APH) does not fall into the critical asset category. In 2005, the Ministry of Transport gave the company the rights to develop a petroleum hub and bunkering facilities on an island off the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP). In return, APH was to get a 30-year lease to operate the facilities.

Malaysia plans to lure storage operators
September 27, 2012Dateline 2012-09-14:
Malaysia is throwing down the gauntlet to Singapore in its bid to emerge as Asia’s go-to commodity trading hub, according to the Financial Times (FT).
The move, according to the paper’s Singapore-based Asia correspondent Jeremy Grant in an article published on Wednesday, is being spearheaded by a unit in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s office as part of an ambitious push to position the country as South-East Asia’s centre for oil, gas and petrochemicals.
The FT quoted Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corp (MPRC) executive director Syahrilazli Mahammad as saying Malaysia was embarking on an aggressive plan to attract oil-storage operators by offering zero tax rates as an incentive for companies to build millions of barrels of storage capacity in Johor.

Gumusut deepwater field starts to pump oil
September 26, 2012Really?
Dateline 2012-09-13:
Malaysia has started pumping oil from the Gumusut deepwater oilfield offshore Sabah, with an initial output of 10,000 barrels per day (bpd), sources familiar with the matter said.
Gumusut, operated by Royal Dutch Shell and discovered in March 2004, is expected help Malaysia reverse its declining output and boost the country’s oil revenue, but its start up has been dogged by construction delays.
Crude output at Gumusut, located off the eastern state of Sabah in Block J, was expected to reach 25,000 bpd by the end of this year, said the sources, who declined to be identified due to company policy on speaking to the media.

Insight: Iran parks oil off Malaysia to dodge Western sanctions
September 25, 2012Dateline 2012-09-13:
Iran is using a little-known port off the East Malaysia coast to hide millions of barrels of oil from Western sanctions, according to shipping data, industry sources and officials.
A Reuters examination of shipping movements and interviews shows how Iranian crude is shipped to the area and loaded on to empty vessels at night to await potential Asian buyers. Storing the oil on hired tankers operating under the Panamanian flag in the calm waters off the tax-haven port of Labuan – an offshore financial centre about the size of Manhattan – means Iran can keep its own fleet active and ensure the flow of oil money into its struggling economy.

September 23, 2012Brisk demand for local rigs
September 22, 2012Dateline 2012-09-12:
WE hosted a luncheon for private company Gryphon, an aggressive accumulator of mobile offshore production unit (Mopu) rigs that is benefitting from thriving exploration and production (E&P) activities in the oil and gas (O&G) sector, to provide its outlook for the Malaysian rig market.
Gryphon expects especially brisk demand for the sparsely available Malaysian-flagged rigs driven by rising rig count in Malaysian waters, as Malaysia intensified its E&P activities to boost oil production, rising substitution effect as Malaysian-flagged rigs replace some foreign-flagged rigs (on charter expiry). Gryphon notes that the domestic charter rate for rigs has recently firmed up, and expects rates to inch up over time, which point to potentially rising margins for rig owners.
