I am afraid that oil and gas is really in bad shape now. I am graduate from local university in chemical engineering and still looking for a job with humble 6 month internship experience. Any room for me?

    my tips

    1. Stay No to online jobs. A masses of unemployed people are going to these websites applying for jobs. The competition is fierce.Apply in person if you can.

    2. Call companies who are not advertising they have a job available. If you can, apply for a job the old fashion way, in-person or call companies directly on the telephone. You have better chance of getting it, if it is not advertised to the masses. Hit the pavement and ask people who work there, if the company is currently hiring.

    3.Take What You Can Get:
In a recession, you have to take what you can get. Don’t be too picky. A job is a job, even if it does pay minimum wage. The recession is about survival of the fittest. Drop your pride and work a lower job for less money, even if you have Masters Degree with 20 years experience. When things get better, then you kick that job to a curb.

    4. Network
Ask all your employed friends and family members who are working and have jobs, if there company is hiring. Right now you are looking for the real job hook-up! It doesn’t matter if it part-time, full-time, temporary or seasonal. A job for any length of time is a good deal right now. So don’t be afraid to ask around to everyone.

5.Substitute teach (not sure if we still practice this in school or not)
If you have a Bachelor’s degree, you might consider getting your emergency teaching credential to substitute teach at elementary, middle school or high school. There always seems to be a need for substitute teachers and during the recession is no exception.

    6. No Pity Parties:
I know it is very discouraging. I watch CNN and read the newspaper too, but things will get better. It is hard not to feel sorry for yourself, especially if you lost your home due to foreclosure, and you lost your job too. It is easier said than done not to feel sorry for yourself. Hang in there, you never know when things will get better.

Lastly..think positive and pray that you find a job so you can feed your family and pay your bills. I know how it feels to have RM10 in your pocket and no money in your savings account. Be thankful, things could be a lot worse!

  3. Jabbathehutt says:

Jabba used to be flat broke younger in my career. Being left with RM30 in pocket, buying ikan dulang (i.e. u get 3 trays of random fish at pasar malam for RM10). Riding motor with 2T level constantly on low to save money.

    Everyone been through it.

Now, I am the crime boss. hahahaha.

weather it out. things will get better.

  4. io says:

very bad. here in norway companies started to lay off contract staff. my boss told me statoil put on hold few exploration contract which has already been signed last year. my friend in the UK told me, becthel has started to lay off permanent staff (this is scary). I’ve also being told that shell global solutions is freezing the recruitment on top of that, there will be no increment for 2009 (applicable to nl office only. not sure about other offices). and now, i’m sitting in front of my pc shaking my legs. very free…. this is not good.

  5. io says:

by the way… slumdog millionaire is really a good movie though. at least to my perspective. i really enjoyed the movie. touching…

  6. Relax says:

It’s not the end of the world.
Chef Li left his white collar career (bank manager) to begin his own kuey tiow business and now he’s a rich dude.

  7. salleh says:

Not sure about it, still arranging interview for my client, project has to progress and job must be done only now they want the experiance engineers only, people with 10 years industry experiance or more and have work with contractor/consultant and also operating company. People like Jabba & Wata has a good chance in moving jobs now

  8. Fadzli says:

Yes,you are right..they sold knowledge and experience..the most valuable assets and job insurance.

  9. Wata says:

salleh: I’ll let Jabba work out the details. Where he goes, I follow the slime trail.

  10. bendspear says:

Wow, synergy quite strict, my application failed in 24 hours. Really tough time.

  11. Engineer1 says:

bendspear: Well, Wata run a tight ship. Try harder next time.

  12. Jabbathehutt says:

Jabba just back from offshore visiting CNOOC fields. Just to update, the platforms in CNOOC Indonesia uses all ladies name. Based on some of the older guys explaination, it is based on the operator’s new born daughters.

Anyway, Wata is running a tight ship. Its based on an international accepted crimeboss employee vetting program developed

Do write and ask for a job. it sometimes serves as an entertainment, especially badly written self description to whoever reading the letters.
