I go to Kerteh once in a while, either chasing business, or being chased to get business in that most famous of oil towns. Well, the ‘town’ designation is a bit grand for a place that is essentially a hamlet.
Anyhow, travel around Kerteh is difficult if you don’t have your own transport. Taxis are based at Kerteh airport, and charge you according to travel distance to and from the base. You won’t find taxis roaming the streets that you can flag down.
Taxi travel is expensive around Kerteh, with the rates being set the local Taxi Association (located at said airport). Sample costs are:
- Awana Kijal to TCOT is RM50
- Airport to TCOT is RM25
- Awana Kijal to PETRONAS @ Rantau PETRONAS is RM25
- Awana Kijal to Airport RM30
Note that the taxis make most of their money ferrying people to and from the airport. These would be people transferring to and from offshore, and passengers on the twice-a-day Subang shuttle. I guess the low volumes justify the high cost of taxis.
Useful contact nos. are:

My suggestion is that if you travel to Kerteh via Kuantan and have a lot of places to visit, rent a car at the Kuantan airport.
It makes economic sense for them to do it that way. Locals do not need taxis; hence there aren’t in town service. People who go there clearly have designated spots from the airport; hence to and from the airport journeys are sensible. Lastly, there isn’t enough supply but there is demand and people are willing to pay for it. If you go on a company trip(which most people do to Kerteh), you get reimbursed anyways.
Is there anything to sightsee there?
Soha: In Kerteh, not much to sightsee. People go past the Kerteh industrial area at night to see the lights. There’s an oyster place at Kuala Kerteh. There’s a nice seafood place in town, and one behind the Esso station in Paka. There are a few waterfalls around the area, though I used to go to the Chemerung falls near Bandar Al-Muktafi Bilal Shah (AMBS).
cool stuff – but don’t think i will visit anytime sooon
