Blog from the Trenches – Kerteh Airport

Hmm, it’s 10 in the morning, and I’m at the Kerteh Airport tea room. Yup, Kerteh does have an airport, though it’s unique in the sense that it is a PETRONAS owned facility rather than a Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd asset. The only scheduled flights in and out of here are helicopters designated for offshore locations, and the twice daily Subang-Kerteh turboprop.

No, Kerteh Airport does not have a wifi hotspot, I’m surfing via my N95 and unlimited 3G access. Hey, there’s a business opportunity. Establish a wifi hotspot here, and those who have their own PCs can rent access to it.

I’m scheduled to go offshore, but there seems to be a dearth of choppers. Me and another 40 people are hanging around the airport, in the KIV category. Let’s hope that I can get on a chopper this afternoon, if not the next 2 hours waiting to see if I get on the 1400 flight is will be wasted.

What’s the engineering spin? I work for a consultant company, and when you cut a contract, you should make sure that hours spent in transit are chargeable. Considering the state of transport these days, at least you get some compensation for listening to muzak.

Jabba reckons no one will pay for using Wifi because most oilman are cheapskate. They will work how having a N95 with a unlimited wireless connection is cheaper than paying RM10 for 15mins usage.

Jabba reckons if Jabba needs to make money, hire a bunch of reflexologist (indonesia reflexi) and start putting them in Kertih. probably that makes better sense.

Jabba normally get paid to travel (i.e. travel time). I get to charge for the six slave carrying me too…. (normally two senior slave/engineer and four junior slave/engineer).

hahahahahaaaa……… If I am lucky, I get some hours for my foot reflexologist/drafter.

By the way, the N95 brings back old memories. If you get lost in the jungle, you can use its GPS function to get you home…..

The last time i tried, it says “walk 25km ahead, you will see a shack, buy refreshment, and walk another 25km to reach kampung sesat”.

Great Jabba, we want the reflexologists, and a better tea room if you want to heat up the competition.

Did I mention that flights to my destination were cancelled yesterday, and I am in a holding pattern today, waiting to see if there is ride my way?

Just imagined amount of possible income if you had opened a reflexology centre, in addition to what your consultancy company is paying you.

I bet if it was Jabba at the airport, people would be paying their helicopter pilot not to arrive just so they can enjoy the “amenities” Jabba would provide.

Jabba reckons Wata will reach platform if he swims.

Reminds Jabba the Hutt of the time in Tattoine (sorry, that’s star wars)…. ok..

reminds Jabba of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The airport was closed for a year due to unknown reasons (some claim a bomb went off on the landing strip…. i reckon some aliens probably landed there and abducted some cows). Initially, all oilmen were forced to travel to a god forsaken place all Owerri, with militants took pot shots at the Oil Company’s bus (I won’t mention names, but the logo resembles a crustacean we cook char kue tiaw with). Some private vehicles got robbed, mugged etc. At least oilmen here do not have this problems, only locals selling food along the roads in Kertih.

Tearoom is probably better in Kertih. The only drink we had in Owerri (the back of beyond) is coke, and people selling water packed in plastic bags (yes, it looks like those medical drip bag).

Anyway, hope wata comes and update this blog. I am starting to get bored…..
