The first offshore structure was built to extract oil in the 1930s. Since then, there are now more than 1000 offshore structures worldwide, extracting oil & gas under the ground to meet the world demands.  This one-day course will provide the audience with the basic principles in designing these fixed offshore structures.  It will be presented in a way that is comprehensible to the engineers who are with or without the oil and gas background.
The course will try to address some of the engineering issues that have to be considered when designing an offshore structure. Some of these issues are listed below:
– The environmental loads (such as wave and wind) and accidental loads (such as blast and fire) that the structure has to face throughout its design life.
– How the structure will be fabricated, transported and then installed at its offshore location.
– Technical requirements from the contemporary design codes and third-party certifications.
– The types of analysis that need to be carried out to ensure the structure can meet the above challenges.

Assoc. Professor Dr Venkatesh Rajagopalan (Venkat) graduated from Annamalai University, India with a degree in Structural Engineering in 1989.  He then obtained a post graduate degree in Engineering Management and Post-Doctoral in Structural Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has more than 26 years of working experience in various roles.

He is currently a Senior Principal Structural Engineer at McDermott Malaysia. He has presented talks at various symposiums in India, Singapore and Australia on Design on Offshore structural related topics.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-07 Talk On A Comparative Study: Offshore Facilities Load Out Methodology

aMy technical division will be hosting a talk on the 25th July, 2017. It is worth 2 CPD points (why is it shown as 0 on the web page?), and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Hj. Ahmad Khairiri.

The presentation will share the author’s experience in load out activities and its’ various methodologies. Load-out is the process of transferring offshore structure from fabrication yard onto the transportation barge/vessel and the process of structure’s sea fastening prior to sail away. The load-out process generates load-out forces on the structure as it moves from the fabrication yard to the barge.  Most often, these activities are performed at the fabrication yard which is located near the sea area.

Ir. Hj. Ahmad Khairiri is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, United Kingdom, and a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. Currently, he is with Global Project Delivery, Project Delivery & Technology Division of PETRONAS. Responsible in ensuring the governance of onshore construction and fabrication work. Recently completed task include the load-out activities of F12, Angsi-Besar and Bardegg jackets and topsides. Previously, he was responsible to ensure the successful completion of the offshore installation hook up work for PETRONAS first floating LNG, PFLNG SATU Project. He was with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, OGP Technical Services Sdn Bhd and PETRONAS Gas Bhd involving in various project locally and globally.

My technical division will be hosting a 3 day  course on the 3rd to 5th July, 2017. It is worth 18 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. CHUA KENG SENG.

This fundamental course is designed to give you the understanding of the essential theories and the working principles of air conditioning system. It will also show you how to apply them in practice for the proper operation, energy saving and troubleshooting of the air conditioning system.  It also includes an overview of different types of air conditioning systems and their applications.  The second part of the course will equip you with the capability of designing air conditioning systems in cooling capacity calculation, air duct design and chilled water piping design.

Ir. CHUA KENG SENG, B.E. (Hons), MIEM, P.Eng, MASHRAE, MIMM, CCP, graduated from the University of Malaya in 1974. Qualified as a Professional Engineer, he worked with Carrier Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., first as the Service Manager and then as Engineering Manager for about 10 years. During the next 25 years, he operated his own companies in contracting, maintenance and also in consultancy business. He has wide experience in the design, installation, and troubleshooting on various types of systems and also in project management. He was in the design and project management team which implemented the Putrajaya Precinct 2 District Cooling Plant which has a capacity of 30,000 cooling tons. Ir. Chua has also been involved in many training programmes. He lectured air conditioning design in the Mechanical Faculty of University Malaya between 1978 and 1984 as well as in Monash University for the 3 years. Besides he had been invited to deliver lectures and presentations in the University Technology Malaysia, University Technology Petronas, The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and conducted in-house training for some Corporate Companies.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-06 Talk On Issues of Vibration From Blasting

Blasting of rock using explosives is a necessity when other rock breaking equipment such as rock breakers, chemical or any other means could not do so. Rock blasting is actually the cheapest mean to break rock, to fragment rock or to remove rock to a design level such as road, building foundation, sump etc. in construction work. However, the use of explosives produces ground and air vibration which may cause damage to structure and annoyance issues to the public. There are many complains from the public of alleged cracks on the walls, ceiling etc. resulted from this blasting work. There are also fears from the public that the use of explosives at construction site may endanger the people and properties nearby. Blast monitoring using seismograph is actually a necessity and the authority had imposed a condition that vibration from blasting must not exceed certain limit that will minimise annoyance and reduces any risk of damage to structure.

Ir. Hj Look Keman bin Sahari graduated from Strathclyde University, Glasgow, Scotland in mining engineering in 1979 and served as engineer at Mines Department (now Jabatan Mineral dan Geoscience) from 1979 to 1996. He started his career as mining geotechnical engineer specialising in landslide investigation at Pusat Penyelidekan Mineral, Ipoh and later as Inspector of Mines serving Perak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca. In 1990 he further his studies at Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University, England and earned M.Sc in Explosives Ordnance Engineering. He had also attended many rock blasting courses in mining, quarrying and tunneling locally and overseas. He had given lectures on the subject at IEM.

From 1996, he works as independent consultant engineer specialising in the use explosives in mining quarrying and construction work. He also specialises in blast monitoring work. He is a committee member of IEM Training Board and Oil & Gas and Mining Technical Division. He is Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate, Fellow of IEM, Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying and a Member of International Society of Explosive Engineers, USA

Ir. Prof. (B) Dr. Maulud Abdul Latif obtained his Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in Engineering Finance from UTM/University of Warwick. He also holds an MBA Finance from the University of Queensland Business School, a B. Sc. (Hons) in Mining Engineering from the University of Wales and a Diploma in Mechanical Eng. from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. In addition, he holds the Dredgemaster Certificate of Competency and is a member of the Board of Engineers, Malaysia, The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia and the Institute of Mineral Engineers.

He started his career in Malaysia Mining Corporation (1977) and has an extensive experience in project feasibility studies (technical, marketing and finance) and mine management. She worked for both the industry and academia focusing on English Language teaching for adults and professionals. Her specialties are on Business English and Communication Skills; also, a Cambridge ESOL Certified Speaking Examiner. My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 15th February, 2017 (Hey, if things don’t work out on the 14th…) It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Hj Look Keman Bin Sahari, Brig. General Mustapha bin Omar and Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohamed Alias bin Yusof.

Malaysia is considered a young country and rapidly developing. We see many new high rise building coming up even on small plot of land in city area. This is due to high cost of land. However, anything that goes up some day, sometimes it will have to come down. It can be due to aging, high cost of maintenance, availability of new technology, new planning by the owner or authority or whatever other reasons. It is very rare when forwarding development plan, the subject of the need for demolition later is ever considered. Bringing down a building or any structure by mechanical means for example will subject the neighbours to vibration, dust noise and numerous other dangers to them for a long time. It may even take several months. There are also incidents where demolition workers were injured and some were killed in line of duty. Demolition by using explosive may require the services of civil/structural engineer working together with the blasters and blasting engineer. The preparation may take months to study the structural plan of the building to be taken down, to survey the surrounding area and plan how to mitigate the effect of air blast, fragmentation, dust and ground vibration. Beside that the proponent will have to convince the authority that demolition by using explosive is the most practical and probably the cheapest way. Demolition by itself will only take a few minutes. Demolition by using explosives will require the blasters/blasting engineers to have the knowledge of both military and commercial explosives which in Malaysian scenario will require a person to have military background but need to learn the use of commercial explosive in service of after he leaves. Currently the only Institution that give training in the use of commercial explosive is Institute of Quarrying and endorsed by Jabatan Mineral and Geoscience. However, it is tailored to quarrying.  Therefore, there is a need to add to the current syllabus for Shotfiring to include construction blasting and demolition issues a least for a short term. This will enable them to communicate and assist the future demolition expert. Currently only those with Shotfirer Certificate are allowed to apply for Explosive Permit. Demolition by using explosive is not taught at any higher Institute of learning in Malaysia. In USA and Europe for example the subject is learned on the job. The course is design as an introduction to demolition by explosives. An introduction of explosive engineering followed by insight into both commercial and military demolition and followed by the effect of using explosives on the structure. Videos on demolition will be shown to support the lecture. The subject of human resource development for demolition engineers will also be touched. The course be particularly useful for those who are likely to be involved in demolition and thinking of the alternative to mechanical means and also the evaluators of the proposal for demolition work such as government engineers.

Hj Look Keman Bin Sahari graduated in mining engineering from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland in 1979. He joined the Mines Department initially as Geotechnical engineer specializing in Slope engineering particularly technical investigation on slope failures. He later joined the Inspectorate division of the Department until retirement in 1996. In 1990 he continued his studies at Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University, England and obtained M.Sc in Explosives Ordnance Engineering. His interest was then on the use of Shape Charge in the industry. On retirement, he worked as Consultant Engineer in the use of explosive for mining, quarrying and construction. He had also served as expert witness in control blasting in Arbitration. As a committee member of IEM Training Board, he had attended many courses particularly on Geotechnical Engineering, Health and Safety, forensic engineering and also tunneling as Auditor. He is a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate and a Fellow of IEM. He had also given lecture on explosives application at IEM and Institute of Quarrying, Malaysia. He is also a qualified Shotfirer.

Brig. General Mustapha bin Omar is a qualified Ammunition Technical Officer and had rose through the rank in the Malaysian Army to become Chief Ammunition Technical officer He is an expert in the application of military explosives including demolition. He also had a Diploma in Industrial Management from UKM in 1993 and subsequently Bachelor in Business Administration from UPM in 2001. In 2002-2003 he further his studies at Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University at MSc level in Explosives Ordnance Engineering. He is also knowledgeable in the use of commercial explosives and had attended a Shotfirer Course organised by Institute of Quarrying, Malaysia. He is currently a Senior Research Officer at STRIDE (Institute Penyelidekan Sains Teknologi Pertahanan.

Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohamed Alias bin Yusof obtained his Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from UTM in 2002, MSc in Project Management from UITM in 2005 and Ph D in Civil Engineering in 2012 from University Pertahanan National Malaysia. He is also a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineer. Dr Alias specialises in the Blast Effect on Structure. He is also knowledgeable in Commercial and Military explosives and had also attended course in Explosives Engineering at Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University He also attended Shotfirer Course and Blast Vibration, Monitoring and Control Course at Institute of Quarrying Malaysia.
