October 28, 2020

Dateline 2020-09-23, Malay Mail:

A taskforce will be set up with the objective of ensuring that all 624 abandoned oil wells throughout Miri would not pose any danger to the public and also to the environment.

Transport Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said this taskforce, comprising experts from oil and gas (O&G) industries, would be chaired by the Miri Resident.

“Petronas, Shell and Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) will form this taskforce.

“We will also invite those from Curtin University Malaysia, who are experts in petroleum engineering and geophysics, to look into all the abandoned oil wells in Miri, particularly those up on Canada Hill that have been left abandoned for a long time,” he said when met by reporters after chairing a meeting on ‘Abandoned Oil Wells and Historical Places in Miri’, which took place at the Resident’s Office here yesterday.

Invest more on workforce, O&G players encouraged

March 31, 2020

Dateline 2020-02-04, Borneo Post:

The oil and gas (O&G) industry players should consider investing continuously into their workforce through training and retraining, in view of today’s challenging landscape.

In this regard, Minister of Transport Datuk Lee Kim Shin believes that the economic prospects in Miri as far as O&G is concerned are ‘looking brighter’, with tens of millions of ringgit worth of investments being injected into projects.

As such, he sees the need to revitalise the industry, where there is a high demand for workforce.

Lee: Miri should be centre of oil and gas industry in Malaysia

October 21, 2016

Reeeaaaaaally?

Dateline 2016-09-08, Borneo Post:

Miri should be made the centre of oil and gas industry in the country because it is the birth place of the industry over 100 years ago.

Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin said it was high time Petronas acknowledged this fact and this was among issues that had to be addressed by the oil and gas company in order to be more practical.

“Sarawakians have the longest experience in the oil and gas industry in Malaysia; having been in the industry for over 100 years. This is a fact. Petronas must recognise the fact that the oil and gas industry started in Sarawak in 1910.

“The industry started in Miri, so it is only logical that Petronas gives more attention and focus on oil and gas development in Sarawak,” he said during the launch of Oceancare Corporation Sdn Bhd’s (OCSB) Rope Access Training Centre in Piasau yesterday.

Its president Datuk Nelson Balang Rining was also present.

April 11, 2015

Really? I am looking forward to the RM2.1bn ang pow to support local, bumiputra SMEs and young engineers, and payouts to whistleblowers as to which foreign worker engineer is not registered with the BEM.

Dateline 2015-02-21, Free Malaysia Today:

Oil and gas contractors in Sarawak have been given a RM2.1 billion “ang pow” from Petronas, to be given every year.

The figure is the value of yearly contracts that will be set aside by the national oil corporation exclusively for oil and gas contractors in the state, Star Online reported today.

Assistant state communications minister Lee Kim Shin was reported to have disclosed this at the Chinese New Year open house of Sarawak United People’s Party.
