IEM Shout Out – 2017-10 One Day Course on Shell and Tube Exchanger Thermal Design

September 28, 2017

My technical division will be hosting a one day course on the 31st October, 2017. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Ir. Anwar Ahmad.

During this Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Thermal Design course, there will be overview on the thermal design for designing shell and tube heat exchanger by considering design, operational, and maintenance perspective. The design of the heat exchanger is extremely important, as it is the key element of a heat-exchanged system. This is not only on the desired temperature to achieve during operation but also when considering the optimum design prior procuring an exchanger. Furthermore, properly designed heat exchanger can reduce the turn-down time for maintenance as no frequent cleaning is required while operating the plant or platform. Technologies involved in this thermal technology will be discussed during the workshop to highlight the importance and advantages when designing and operating shell and tube heat exchanger (STHE).

Ir. Anwar Ahmad is a registered Professional Engineer with Board of Engineer (BEM), Corporate Member with Institute of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Corporate Member with Institute of Chemical Engineers, UK (IChemE), Chartered Engineer from Engineering Council, UK with more than eleven (11) years experiences in process engineering in oil and gas industry, mainly in design with engineering firm and operation for technical support during turn around.

Plant and building facilities have diverse operational requirements due to the difference in user populations and the design intent of the facilities. Most facilities design is focused on the process requirements rather than the operations of the facilities. This course focuses on the operational perspective in the design of plant and building facilities. The term operational perspective covers all handling of materials, human machine interfaces and managing people in plant and building facilities.

General operational concerns are touched upon. The operational needs such as handling provisions, human factors and regulatory compliance for the facilities are summarized based on the current practices.  Also, recent development and engineering practices in the plant and building facilities operation are elaborated. Usage of human factors tools and others operational studies in design development activities are discussed as well.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-08 Technical Visit to Yakult (M) Sdn Bhd

August 5, 2017

Yes, come and stock up before Hari Raya.

My technical division will be hosting a visit on the 19th August, 2017.

Yakult was born over 75 years ago and since then has been loved by 28 million of consumers overseas. However, in Malaysia, Yakult is still a young and growing company. Yakult Ace was launched here just a few years ago in 2004. Yakult (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Yakult Honsha, Japan. Yakult has committed millions of ringgit to establish and operate our one and only local factory in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan and our Head Office in Glenmarie, Shah Alam. Since then, we have opened branch offices in Johor Bahru, Melaka, Penang, Kuantan, Ipoh, Seremban and Kota Bharu. Yakult is a high quality probiotics in the form of a cultured milk drink. Yakult contains the probiotic bacteria “Lactobacillus casei Shirota” (also called the “Shirota strain”). With 30 billion live Shirota strain in each bottle, Yakult has among the highest concentrations of probiotics compared to other probiotics on the market (most probiotic drinks and supplements claim to contain at most 1 to 10 billion live probiotic bacteria per serving or per capsule). The Yakult factory was built specially with visitors in mind where the participants can view the whole production process and see how Yakult is being made and can even take a closer look at our bacteria using a microscope, enjoy fun and educational video shows, and sample some delicious, freshly-made Yakult.

IEM Shout Out – 2017-08 One-Day Course on One-Day Course on “The Design of Oil & Gas Fixed Offshore Structure”

July 26, 2017

Structural engineers, please attend.

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day  course on the 12th August, 2017. It is worth 6 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. The course will be presented by Assoc. Professor Dr Venkatesh Rajagopalan (Venkat)

The first offshore structure was built to extract oil in the 1930s. Since then, there are now more than 1000 offshore structures worldwide, extracting oil & gas under the ground to meet the world demands.  This one-day course will provide the audience with the basic principles in designing these fixed offshore structures.  It will be presented in a way that is comprehensible to the engineers who are with or without the oil and gas background.
The course will try to address some of the engineering issues that have to be considered when designing an offshore structure. Some of these issues are listed below:
– The environmental loads (such as wave and wind) and accidental loads (such as blast and fire) that the structure has to face throughout its design life.
– How the structure will be fabricated, transported and then installed at its offshore location.
– Technical requirements from the contemporary design codes and third-party certifications.
– The types of analysis that need to be carried out to ensure the structure can meet the above challenges.

Assoc. Professor Dr Venkatesh Rajagopalan (Venkat) graduated from Annamalai University, India with a degree in Structural Engineering in 1989.  He then obtained a post graduate degree in Engineering Management and Post-Doctoral in Structural Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has more than 26 years of working experience in various roles.

He is currently a Senior Principal Structural Engineer at McDermott Malaysia. He has presented talks at various symposiums in India, Singapore and Australia on Design on Offshore structural related topics.
