THERE was a rush to install solar panels on commercial premises last year, as rumours started circulating that the government would no longer provide one-on-one credit for the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme.

According to Steven Chiew, the founder of Next Energy, the rush for the rooftop segment at the end of last year was because the quota for NEM2.0 had almost been taken up. A lot of businesses wanted take advantage of the one-on-one credit benefit as it has been proven to reduce electricity cost.

Gas Malaysia announces new natural gas tariff hike

Gas Malaysia Bhd has been directed to implement the new average base tariff for the utilisation of the natural gas distribution system (NGDS) under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, Gas Malaysia said the directive was issued via a letter from the Energy Commission dated March 31.

β€œWith the adjustment to the base average tariff, the allowed average tariff for Gas Malaysia Distribution Sdn Bhd (GMD) for the period from April 1 to Dec 31 is RM2.05/MMBtu. Meanwhile, the approved surcharge to GMD’s tariff, remains at RM0.62/MMBtu for the same period,” Gas Malaysia said.


ConocoPhillips gears up for Malaysian drilling

ConocoPhillips is set to drill up to three wells off the Malaysian state of Sarawak after hiring a jack-up drilling rig from Malaysia’s Velesto Energy.

Velesto said ConocoPhillips has hired its Naga (dragon) 7 jack-up rig under a contract worth $8 million. Drilling is planned to start before end of June.

ConocoPhillips is considering drilling up to three wells offshore Sarawak this year – the Salam-3 appraisal and the Gagau-1 wildcat on Block WL4-00, and the Mersing-1 exploration well on Block SK 304.


PTTEP and partners make oil and gas discovery offshore Malaysia

Thailand’s PTT Exploration & Production (PTTEP) and its partners have made new oil and gas discovery in the Sirung-1 wildcat exploration well offshore Malaysia.

The exploration well is situated in Block SK405B production sharing contract (PSC), located in the shallow waters of Balingian Province, approximately 237km off the coast of Miri, Sarawak.

Drilled to a total depth of 2,538m, the Sirung-1 exploration well encountered significant oil and gas column, exceeding 100m within the Oligocene to Middle Miocene sandstone reservoirs.

The partners plan for an appraisal well in near future to assess the upside resources.


Malaysia’s Petronas Chemicals pins hopes on Saudi Aramco JV

Β Malaysia’s Petronas Chemicals Group is pinning its hopes on a long-awaited $16 billion Saudi-backed refinery and petrochemical project as it seeks to boost slumping profits while investigating possible new acquisitions, its top executive told Nikkei Asia.

The Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) joint venture in the southern state of Johor is a portion of the larger $27 billion Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex mooted in 2012. Saudi Aramco — Saudi Arabia’s national oil producer — is to supply half of the crude feedstock for the refining portion and share half of the output.


Malaysia’s Petronas says first to produce LNG from 2 floating facilities

Malaysia’s state oil firm PetronasΒ PETR.ULΒ said on Thursday it had become the first global energy company to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) from two floating production units, following its first cargo delivery from the second floater facility.

The Petronas Floating LNG DUA (PFLNG DUA), sitting off the coast of Sabah on Malaysia’s Borneo island, has a production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of LNG per year and operating at the water depth of 1,300 metres, the firm, formerly known as Petroliam Nasional Berhad, said in a statement.


B20 biodiesel mandate in Malaysia expected to absorb one million tonnes of CPO, says industry expert

The B20 biodiesel mandate in Malaysia is expected to utilise over one million tonnes of crude palm oil (CPO), said Malaysian Biodiesel Association (MBA) president UR Unnithan.

The implementation of the mandate to roll out B20 β€” biofuel with a 20% CPO component β€” for the transport sector has been delayed to December 2021 in Peninsular Malaysia.

It has already been implemented in Sarawak since September 2020 and is scheduled to be rolled out in Sabah in June 2021.
