Saturday Star 2008-12-27 – Job Opportunities

December 31, 2008

Another week, another scan of the Saturday Star newspaper. Here’s a list of job ads in the paper:

  • Synergy Oil and Gas Engineering is recruiting fresh chemical engineering graduates, or those with around 1 year experience. CVs may be sent to enquiry@synergykl.com.my. It’s also looking for admin execs who can run the invoicing / payroll / accounting as well as be office managers. We DO have a physical office, y’know.

Strangely, there were no oil and gas engineering adverts in the last Saturday issue.

Well, I’m upbeat that SOGE will survive and prosper during this period. Maybe my readers can send work my way?

Saturday Star 2008-12-20 – Job Opportunities

December 22, 2008

Another week, another scan of the Saturday Star newspaper. Here’s a list of job ads in the paper:

  • Synergy Oil and Gas Engineering is recruiting fresh chemical engineering graduates, or those with around 1 year experience. CVs may be sent to enquiry@synergykl.com.my. It’s also looking for admin execs who can run the invoicing / payroll / accounting as well as be office managers.
  • Technip has requirements for an offshore structural engineer, architectural outfitting engineers, electrical engineers, civil/structural engineers. Visit their website.
  • Here’s a company that people as about, Offshore Works. Their subsidiary, Offshore Geo-Surveys Sdn Bhd, is looking for a geotechnical engineer.

Sigh, when I move with Synergyout of KL, will you patronise Chee Meng in my memory?

BEM CPD Records – Word Copy (donateware)

December 21, 2008

As a service to the community, I’ve transcribed the PDF form available at the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) site into a Word document. The table automatically calculates your total weighted hours using fields. When you are done, select the whole table and hit F9 to update the fields.

Find this useful? Send a donation my way.

Ah, my first visit offshore after I joined Esso Production Malaysia Inc (note the use of the old name).

MOGSEC – MOG(small)EC

December 19, 2008

There is an organization called the Association of Malaysian Oil & Gas Engineering Consultants, acronym MOGEC. Its stated objective is to

foster a closer relationship among the oil and gas engineering consultants

If you look the MOGEC members, it seems as if it is a list of big boys in the O&G consulting industry. Now, are the aims of these entities the same as say those who are starting out in the field? They might be focused on:

  • protectionism of their pie.
  • cooperation to improve economies of scales
  • self – interest in tailoring work to suit the Procurement, Construction and Consulting arms of their respective conglumerates.
  • Possibly distributing work to their overseas partners.

What about the smaller engineering companies? They have different things to worry about:

  • Getting work from big boys.
  • promoting their services viewed as niche markets.
  • Promoting their names.
  • Growing specialised services locally.
  • Getting put (and knowing off) the appropriate lists to get on, and people to talk to.
  • Malaysianization of their operations.
  • Access to financial instruments more suited to their scale.

So, do you think that another industry body, which I propose calling MOGSEC, be appropriate, and would it get support?

Don’t get me started on MOGSC (which is pronounced mogs-see).

Petrol Prices Drop in Malaysia

December 18, 2008

Quoting from the New Straits Times on the 15th Dec, 2008

The price of fuel is reduced further by 10 sen a litre from midnight tonight. The price of RON97 is now RM1.80 from RM1.90 and RON92 at RM1.70 (from RM1.70) and diesel at RM1.70 (from RM1.80).

Linking to my other article on comparative pricing, the US gas price on 15th Dec is RM1.569 per liter (USD1.667 per gallon).

Photosynth – Grandkemang Hotel, Jakarta

December 17, 2008

Okay, I know there’s no engineering here, but I’ve stayed in the grandkemang so often on business that I would label it as a choice for oil and gas visitors to Jakarta. Considering that most of the companies have moved to Jakarta South, the grandkemang is even more convenient.

Photosynth views of the lobby and the pool are here. Drop my name if you pop down.

Different Outlook – Chem Eng

December 16, 2008

If you were a chem eng, you could calculate what the pressure of the pump supplying water to the attraction is:

  • Knowing height and distace, you could calculate exit velocity.
  • Knowing exit velocity, you could calculate the discharge pressure at the holes.

If you were a corrosion engineer, you would wonder what the chem inhibition processes are.

If you were a holiday maker, you would just chill out…
