Saturday Star 2015-07-11– Job Opportunities

July 13, 2015

Ramadan Kareem. May Allah accept my efforts, and yours. Donate to your favourite charity, buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. Or get the Young Turks series (all 4 books). Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me.

  • Talisman/Repsol is looking for people. Team leader, Inspection & Integrity, Topside Integrity and Corrosion Engineer, Material and Welding Engineer, Lead Completion Engineer, Process Safety Engineer (didn’t they just get a new one, and someone is in the queue?) Go and bug them here, and email them  here.
  • I’m looking for jobs for 4Q2015. Send me y0ur POs.
  • An associate of mine is looking for a technical safety part-time adviser. Needs to be needle sharp with respect to QRAs, and HSE safety cases. A calm demeanor to handle nonsensical questions from young engineers helps as well. Either that, or a drinking problem.
  • Nothing much in the news.

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

Food choice of the week? Go visit the mee bandung / asam pedas stall in front of the Petaling Jaya Police Station (don’t ask).

Seen the Episode VII new trailer? Ff you say “What is episode Vii?”, I disown you.

PETRONAS Plays Up Technology, Efficiency Gains in Tough Times

July 12, 2015

Dateline 2015-06-01, Rigzone:

A change of guard at Malaysia’s national oil company (NOC) PETRONAS amid unfavorable oil price movements spells the start of a tighter fiscal regime, but instead of outright cost cutting, its new CEO is paying more emphasis on continued investment in differentiating technologies and increasing operational efficiencies.

Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin understands as the new captain at Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), he needs to steer the company through a “drastic downturn” with market conditions completely reversing those of the reign of his predecessor, Shamsul Azhar Abbas.

Petronas to lead industry-wide effort involving 25 PACs

July 11, 2015

… And the rat race continues anew.

Dateline 2015-07-02, TMI:

“This is not a mere cost cutting exercise. Beyond that, it is about ensuring the robustness and sustainability of our business,” Petronas’ chairman Tan Sri Sidek Hassan said in his speech at the opening ceremony of 15th Asian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Engineering Exhibition (OGA 2015) today.

IEM Shout Out – One-Day Workshop on Rock Blasting and Explosive Engineering

July 9, 2015

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will hosting the above seminar on Wednesday the 11th Aug, 2015 by Mr. Mohamad Razif Kemat, Mr. Yap Hong Hor, and Ir. Look Keman Sahari.

This Workshop will be a series of Courses on the Application of Explosives in mining, quarrying and Construction industries tailored to the engineers and other professionals such as Safety personnel who need to know how explosives are used safely and efficiently in rock blasting operation, mining, quarrying, and construction industries.

The Workshop will introduce the various types of explosives used in the commercial application and suitability of particular explosives for a particular application. The right choice of an initiation system, for example, will determine the degree of disturbance to the public and the potential complaints from them which may cause delays in a blasting project. This may also help the project manager to understand the proposal made by the consulting engineer or blasting engineer for a particular blasting project instead of just depend on blasting contractor’s proposal which purely focus on the cheapest costs.
The Workshop is also a good introduction to those who wish to learn about the productive use of explosives in our life. It includes lectures and demonstration of explosive products (dummy samples) used in our industries. As a result of fast pace development housing, business centres, factories etc are being built near existing structures. Development within city areas for examples requires firm foundation below the surface where underground space are also used as car parks, LRT stations, bus station etc. Excavation of underground space requires the removal of soil and also rocks. In both Selangor and Penang Island the need for building new houses for expanding population requires the cutting and levelling of hilly areas. All these require the use of explosives.

You can register here. Flyers may be obtained here.

IEM Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

July 7, 2015

My technical division will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 13th August, 2015. It is worth 6.5 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates. And it’s a big room, so I need to fill the seats.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:

  • Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
  • Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
  • Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
  • Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
  • Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
  • Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
  • Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

Wata has 19 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, in both design and operations.
