Petronas Group Research and Technology won the Oil and Gas category for a nanobubble flotation technology that removes oil from water. Meanwhile, Petronas Penapisan won the Process Safety award for creating Chemical Hazard Reactivity and Physical Hazard Compatibility Charts in response to the port warehouse explosion that killed more than 200 people in Lebanon in 2020. The charts were implemented to help ensure adequate controls are taken on site and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

Sabah takes another step to carbon neutrality

January 19, 2023

Interesting… means that they have running water sources that they may need to block off to get this working.

Dateline 2022-10-19, FMT:

The Sabah Foundation, or Yayasan Sabah, will develop mini hydropower plants at several locations in the state under a joint venture with hydropower and solar power group G Capital Bhd.

The RM3 billion project, to be undertaken by Sabah Renewable Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd, will mark a new milestone in the Sabah Maju Jaya 2021-2025 transformation masterplan that will help Malaysia become a carbon neutral economy by 2050.

Another agreement, also inked today, will see G Capital and Yayasan Sabah subsidiary Innoprise Synergy Sdn Bhd become shareholders of Sabah Renewable Energy.

Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor, who witnessed the signing of the agreements, said the mini hydropower plants would ensure a constant supply of electricity to Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd.

Potential in Ultra-deepwater Sabah, Malaysia – Can it be Realized?

January 18, 2023

Dateline 2022-10-17, SP Global:

Exploration and development activities in deepwater Sabah, Malaysia have increased since the first oil and gas discovery, Kamunsu East 1, in the late 1990s by Shell. More than 45% of discoveries in the area are found within the Upper Miocene Cycle V reservoirs of the Baram Delta and the Northwest Sabah Province.

The Kikeh field was the first deepwater development in Malaysia which was discovered in 2003 and commenced production in 2007. Six other fields have come onstream since then with the latest, the Rotan field by PTTEP, in early 2021. A variety of production systems have been used for the producing fields in deepwater Sabah. These production systems range from spar dry tree unit (DTU) (Kikeh field), semisubmersible floating production systems (Gumusut-Kakap field), tension leg platforms (TLP) (Malikai field) and floating liquified natural gas (FLNG) (Rotan and Buluh fields).

Malaysia introduces tax incentives in boost for CCS

January 12, 2023

Time for that backyard calcium carbonate generator.

Dateline 2022-10-10, Energy Voice:

Malaysia’s 2023 budget announced on Friday introduces a raft of tax incentives for carbon capture and storage (CCS) as the country aims to become a regional hub for the nascent sector.

As one of the main economic contributors to the country, Malaysia cannot afford to lose these assets and there is a need for a “wake-up call” for Malaysia to aggressively act now and defend its oil and gas assets at the SCS region rather than taking a “soft diplomatic” approach over the situation.
