ExxonMobil banks on local power generation

Over the years, ExxonMobil Inc has scaled down its operations here, being absent in the refinery and retail businesses. But there’s more to Malaysia for the oil major, said ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Malaysia Inc president and chairman Edward E Graham.

“We are still very active,” said Graham in an interview with The Edge Financial Daily. “Exploration still is [commercially viable]. There are areas that have yet to be explored in Malaysia, so that has some potential.”

Pengerang — A game-changer

PENGERANG in Kota Tinggi, Johor, has an abundance of natural resources and unique landforms. It was a place when once upon a time bauxite was extracted and was also famous as a fishing area and for its lobsters.

There is also Desaru, a favourite beach haunt among locals and Singaporeans — at least until the mid-90s.

But despite the seasonal economic activities, not much can be said about the little sub-district. Just like other small “sleepy hollows”, revellers came and went and many young locals, in search of greener pastures, looked elsewhere outside Pengerang.

Sarawak CM denies giving Petronas ultimatum

The Sarawak Chief Minister’s Office has denied a posting on social media that cited Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg purportedly giving an ultimatum to Petronas.

“The office wishes to clarify that the chief minister has never issued such an ultimatum to Petronas though the onus is on Petronas to comply with the state law like any other companies with prospecting and mining interests in Sarawak.

Malaysia renews Petronas CEO’s contract for another three years

The Malaysian prime minister’s office on Tuesday re-appointed Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin as the chief executive officer of state energy firm Petroliam Nasional Bhd, or Petronas, for a second three-year term.

Wan Zulkiflee’s reappointment is seen as a vote of confidence in the company’s and his performance after presiding over a period of low energy prices. He was first appointed CEO in April 2015.

Third Party Access system no threat to Petronas Gas, says Kenanga Research

Kenanga Research is of the view that the Third Party Access (TPA) system, which took effect yesterday, will not be a drag on Petronas Gas Bhd’s (PetGas) earnings, given that the company is purely a transporter and processor and is not involved in gas supply.

In any case, the research house said, TPA will only affect PetGas’ parent company, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and Gas Malaysia Bhd.

On Monday, PetGas announced that the Energy Commission had confirmed the current tariff for the Peninsular Gas Utilisation System, Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang and Regasification Terminal Pengerang will be maintained until the end of this year.

At the same time, the company said it is in full compliance with the technical and operational provisions of the TPA system, which allows any party to have access to gas facilities available.

Kenanga Research said the news was not a surprise, given the management indication earlier that the new tariff structure is likely to be delayed as the authority needs more time to come out with a feasible framework to ensure the stability of the fee structure.

Sarawak CM hints of plans to claim more oil, gas revenue

CHIEF Minister Abang Johari Openg has given another hint that Sarawak will muscle in to claim more revenue from oil and gas for its coffers.

“I already have ideas (on generating more income), but I cannot reveal them today,” said Abang Johari, who is also president of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), the second-largest party in the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, when jointly opening the PBB Women and Youth wings’ triennial delegates’ conference in Kuching today.
