Petronas needs new direction to survive climate change, says MP

October 8, 2021

Again, PETRONAS, Petrlouem Development Act? This is like saying PROTON needs to pivat towards mass transport, and gomen will subsidise them… wait. Or maybe Malaysian Airlines needs to pivot toward hospitaliy services, and gomen will subsidise them.. wait.

Dateline 2021-09-29, FMT:

State energy firm Petronas has to change its business model to survive in the coming decades due to climate change.

Wong Chen (PH-Subang) said it would need to focus instead on renewable energy, together with its contractors, vendors and suppliers.

“Otherwise, Malaysia will face a catastrophe,” he said during his speech on the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) at the Dewan Rakyat.

Growing Champions: Malaysia’s rooftop estate offers valuable solar potential

September 29, 2021

Dateline 2021-09-10, The Edge:

2020 marked a record-breaking year for renewable energy. Solar photovoltaics (PV) will be at the forefront of this continued opportunity in 2021-22, with renewable energy expected to account for 90% of new capacity expansion globally.

This period of accelerating growth is framed by a projected US$6 trillion power sector investment between now and 2025, higher than the expected investment in oil and gas. This is largely driven by expansion in renewable energy.

Solar PV is now a mature and disruptive renewable energy technology, leading capacity additions around the globe. Annual installation of solar PV is expected to reach more than 160gw in 2022, almost 50% higher than in 2019. Rooftop solar is a critical element of this opportunity, unlocking the substantial generation capacity of building stock in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia.

Is Malaysia committed to addressing climate chance?

September 26, 2021

Dateline 2021-09-03, The Sun:

“Code Red for humanity”. That was how United Nations secretary-general António Guterres described the Sixth Climate Change Assessment Report released by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group 1 last month.

“The alarm bells are deafening and the evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel burning and deforestation are choking our planet and putting billions of people at immediate risk,” he was quoted as saying in a statement issued in response to the IPCC report.

Takiyuddin says committed to strengthening Energy and Natural Resources Ministry agenda

September 24, 2021

Dateline 2021-09-01, Malay Mail:

Energy and Natural Resources Minister (KeTSA) Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan today expressed his ministry’s commitment in pursuing its agenda to ensure that the country’s natural resources are safeguarded, and managed sustainably and responsibly for future generations.

Takiyuddin said in line with the agenda to address the country’s climate change, KeTSA was also committed to increasing electricity generation from renewable energy sources through the Electricity Supply Generation Development Plan 2021-2039.

RESEARCHERS REVEAL THE REAL SAVINGS FUEL ECONOMY STANDARDS WILL BRING TO MALAYSIA

September 23, 2021

I think this is what is called ‘angkat bakul sendiri’ but hey, if it saves the world for my office’s cat’s (n)greatgrandkittens, why not?

Dateline 2021-08-31, XJTLU:

In a paper published in the journal Sustainability, Distinguished Professor Teuku Meurah Indra Mahlia and PhD student Ahmad Zuhairi Muzakir, both from UTS, along with Professor Eng Hwa Yap from XJTLU, found that if Malaysia adopted a fuel economy standards policy similar to those implemented internationally, it would provide huge savings in fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

Not impossible to achieve net zero emissions

September 19, 2021

Dateline 2021-08-18, NST:

Malaysia has an urgent role in fighting climate change as we hold a large amount of fossil fuel resources.

According to Malaysia’s third biennial update report (BUR3) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, we are committed to reducing greenhouse gases emissions intensity per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 45 per cent from the level in 2005, unconditionally.

In the renewables race, how can Malaysia come out on top?

September 15, 2021

I would like to define renewables as sources that will be able to regenerate before Cthulhu rises.

Dateline 2021-08-14, FMT:

As countries begin to implement environmental protectionist policies, and with regional neighbours making strides in their green energy industries, Malaysia’s lack of progress in the space stands out.

FMT takes a closer look at Malaysia’s renewable energy situation and the way forward for the country.

What are renewables?

Renewables are forms of energy that do not require the burning of fossil fuels like petrol, diesel and coal which take eons to regenerate.

Why the silence on key climate change report, Putrajaya asked

September 9, 2021

Oo, this was before we had a change of underwear. Let the new underware speak.

Dateline 2021-08-14, FMT:

Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has questioned the government’s silence on a key United Nations (UN) report on climate change and its effects.

Released last Monday by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the landmark report warns that global warming is dangerously close to spiralling out of control, saying humans are “unequivocally” to blame.

Speaking to FMT, Shahril said Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin could have addressed the report yesterday in his speech at the launch of the Perkukuh initiative, in which he announced reforms for government-linked investment companies (GLICs).

Solar PV cn help businesses save at least 25% on Energy Costs

September 8, 2021

Unless you are like me, the inverter kaputs every 2 years or so. And I don’t want savings, I want profit.

Dateline 2021-08-XX, The Star (hey, don’t they put datelines in anymore?)

A typical solar photovoltaic (PV) panel installation on commercial or industrial properties would help businesses to save potentially at least 25 per cent in electricity cost, UOB Malaysia deputy chief executive officer Ng Wei Wei said.

She said the amount of savings translates to an average payback period of three to five years on businesses’ total investments.

“Landed residential property households get to enjoy between 30 per cent and 50 per cent of monthly savings in electricity bills.

Renewable Energy the Way to Go

September 7, 2021

I think ‘energy that exceed UN Sustainable Development Goals and gives my grandchildren other than a Malaysian desert’ is the way to go, but hey, each to his own pocket.

Dateline 2021-08-XX, The Star:

Tough economic times are the best time for companies or individuals to invest in solar photovoltaic systems, says the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda).

Seda Strategic Planning Division director Ibrahim Ariffin said the value proposition for investments was two-fold – environmental and cost savings in the form of electricity bills.

“Climate change and sustainability have become key motivations across the globe and for the private sector.
