RM300bil-RM400bil in investments needed for Malaysia to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

Malaysia’s commitment to becoming a nation with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 would require RM350 billion to RM400 billion in cumulative investments, mainly in the energy sector, representing 0.8 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) every year until 2050.

Bursa Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said this shift includes continued investment in public transportation, tax incentives to promote electric vehicles, and the commitment to phase out coal.

Govt giving more attention to renewable energy, says PM

Putrajaya will be implementing a programme aimed at improving the nation’s electricity supply system as part of efforts to transition to renewable energy (RE), says Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The government has approved an allocation for the distribution of 1,200 megawatts (MW) of RE for solar power, he said.

This will include the installation of solar panels on the roofs of government buildings, Bernama reported.

MALAYSIA’S response to climate change underpins our international commitments – previously through the Kyoto Protocol 1997 (ratified in 2002), which expired in 2020, and thereafter the now legally binding Paris Agreement 2015 (ratified in 2016), which requires concerted policy focus and action from signatories to ensure the fulfilment of the set objectives and national obligations.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated that the government will continue to uphold Malaysia’s pledge to cut the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 45% in 2030, even as the country’s contribution is less than 0.7%.

Malaysia has reached 23% installation of renewable energy (RE), and is planning to hit 40% by 2035.

Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Datuk Ali Biju said the transition of Malaysia’s electricity supply system towards a low-carbon energy system is outlined in the Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap, which focuses on increasing the share of four key RE resources, namely solar, biomass, biogas and hydro, through a balanced yet sustainable approach.

He said the push for the energy transition had become much stronger over the past few years.

A pilot study conducted at the Cyberjaya Sewage Treatment Plant found that every 15 litres of raw sewage can produce 15 per cent butanol gas and 1.5 per cent ethanol.

Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the study conducted by Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) and local company EMB Business Sdn Bhd was in line with efforts towards a circular economy in exploring the potential of sewage waste as a source of renewable energy.

Malaysia to stop building coal plants from 2040

The Malaysian government will stop building coal power plants starting in 2040, and shift its focus toward clean and renewable energy, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s department in charge of economy Mustapa Mohamed.

Speaking at a question and answer session of the Malaysian Parliament’s second meeting, Mustapa said the ongoing global energy crisis will accelerate the transition to cleaner energy, adding that Malaysia will improve its renewable energy capacity to fulfill the set targets.

A number of renewable energy sources identified for development include hydroelectricity, solar energy, biogas and biomass, he said, noting that battery energy storage technology will also be introduced to ensure quality and guaranteed power supply.

Tap into huge potential of ‘mini’ power plants

I say we go for Rolls Royce mini fusion (or fission) plants.

The government is aiming to achieve 40% renewable energy capacity by 2035 with a focus on green energy, including solar, hydro, and bio energy.

This aim, as outlined in the Malaysia Renewable Energy Roadmap (MyRER), is noble and progressive.

The reality is that while renewable energy is the buzzword for governments, NGOs, and climate change experts alike, it is not a new concept in Malaysia.

For many years, the government has supported efforts to increase renewable energy uptake in Malaysia.
