From the Star – No listing plan for Petronas Carigali

December 30, 2010

Please, someone tell me why PETRONAS would want to sell off one of their cash cows and their talent pool for upstream engineering. Selling off Carigali would mean the PETRONAS may be the only National Oil Company without an Operating Company. Can you say ‘ATM machine’?

And does MIDF have an ulterior motive in starting such rumours?

Taken from the Star, dateline 2010-12-25:

National oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) has shot down market talk that it will list wholly-owned exploration and production unit Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd.

“We have no plans to list Petronas Carigali or any other unit,” a Petronas spokesperson told StarBizWeek when contacted yesterday.

Several business dailies yesterday quoted MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd research head as saying that Petronas Carigali could list on Bursa Malaysia next year in a move to draw foreign funds.

From The Star – Plant fires won’t affect Petronas Chemicals’ business

December 29, 2010

Anyone planning to sell their shares in anticipation of the next ‘fire sale’?

Taken from the Star, dateline 2010-12-27:

The fire that occurred at the aromatic plant belonging to Petronas Chemicals Group Bhd is not expected to have any major impact on its business; however, any prolonged closure could affect its revenue.

According to OSK Research analyst Jason Yap, the plant is used to produce paraxylene and benzene, which make up about 20% of forecast revenue for financial year ending March 31, 2011 (FY11).

From Bernama – Malaysia, Brunei To Publish Book On Oil Industry

December 23, 2010

Someone please send an autographed copy or two my way. Thanks. From Bernama, dateline 2010-12-18:

Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam will jointly publish two coffee table books on the oil industry and the flora and fauna in Borneo in an effort to step up cooperation in the field of information.

The initiative, to be undertaken by Brunei Darussalam Information Department and the Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA), will also involve photo exhibition to be held in both countries.

These were among the new programmes agreed during the 3rd meeting of the Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Joint Technical Committee on Information which ended here Saturday.

Deputy Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum said the publication of the two books would promote both countries to the world as well as further enhance cooperation in the field of information.

“I believe the books will be easy to read. Beginning from history, for example, how oil was found in Brunei and in Miri, also is the uniqueness of the flora and fauna in Borneo,” he told reporters.

Fire – MCOT

December 22, 2010

From the Business Times, dateline 2010-12-21:

The operation of the Miri Crude Oil Terminal (MCOT) in Lutong, about 12 kilometres from Miri, was halted for three hours today after a fire broke out.
PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, the exploration arm of national oil corporation PETRONAS, in a statement today said the fire, which started at about 9.30am today was extinguished within 10 minutes.
It said the fire started at the MCOT’s Free Water Knock-Out Vessel which received the oil and gas supply from offshore.
“The incident did not cause any injuries to personnel,” the statement said, adding that the terminal’s operation resumed at 1.15pm today.
