“The length of the pipeline is 94km in Sabah and 427km in Sarawak, and involves more than 3,000 workers, half of whom were recruited from local people.”

The other seven SSGP camps along the 521km route are Camp 1 Beaufort, Sabah; Camp 2, Lawas; Camp 3, Merarap; Camp 4, Limbang; Camp 6, Long Lapok; Camp 7, Niah; and Camp 8, Bintulu.

IEM Shout Out – Visit to Penjom Gold Mine

April 11, 2012

This is a shout out for the IEM. My technical division will be hosting a trip to Penjom Gold Mine, Kuala Lipis, Pahang on the 28th April, 2011. You will be anointed with 4 CPD / PDP hours.

Penjom Gold Mine is the largest producing gold mine in Malaysia and is owned by Indonesian based PT J Resources Nusantara. The mine is located in Kuala Lipis District, Pahang, 170km from Kuala Lumpur. A trip by road to Penjom may take 2 to 3 hours from Kuala Lumpur. Prior to 1990, mining activity at Penjom was intermittent during 19th and 20th centuries, exploiting oxide ore and alluvial deposit as well as into the deeper part by underground working. Production figure during this period was unknown. However, based on the intensity of old working underground shafts and tailing sand left over in certain areas, the amount of gold extracted must have been quite substantial.

A review of the economic potential of gold by the Pahang State Government in early 1990 led to major exploration work; which succeeded in bringing Penjom back to the world map as the pioneer large scale gold mining in Peninsular Malaysia by applying modern technology. Starting in December 1996, with less than 5 years resources, Penjom continues to grow and reached 1Moz of gold produced in 2007. Through systematic exploration strategy, Penjom is looking to increase the current 1.1Moz resources identified below the current topography.

Penjom is located 30km away from the major tectonic structure of Bentong Raub Suture, along a NNE splay of this structure. The deposits is hosted within shear vein and associated extension veins where the highest ore grade are associated with felsites intrusive which providesd physical and chemical contrast unit. Sedimentary rock host to ore zone is at times highly carbonaceous and produces significant problem to plant processing recovery. However, proper stockpile management and processing technique of Resin-in-Leach (RIL) have overcome this problem with 91% plant recovery achievable depending on the carbon level.

Tentative schedule:

  • 07.00am Bus departs from IEM, PJ
  • 09.30am ETA Penjom Gold Mine
  • 09.30am – 11.30am Safety induction and project briefing
  • 11.30am – 11.45am Mill tour
  • 11.30am – 3.00pm Property and Mine Tour, Lunch, Photography session and End of Visit

Energy sector to play a bigger role

April 10, 2012

Dateline 2012-04-03:

ACCOUNTING For about 20% of gross domestic product (GDP), energy is an important factor in the country’s economic growth.

The Government plans to increase diversification of the energy industry, step up exploration for new oil and gas resources, enhance production from known reserves, and encourage the use of alternative energy sources.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin said that the energy sector’s contribution to the gross national income (GNI) was expected to rise from RM110bil in 2009 to RM241bil in 2020.

The oil, gas and energy (OGE) National Key Economic Area (NKEA) is targeting 5% annual growth for the sector from 2010 to 2020. The OGE NKEA would focus on four key thrusts: sustaining oil and gas production, enhancing downstream growth, making Malaysia the number one Asian hub for oil field services and building a sustainable energy platform for growth.

IEM WE Invite All Women Engineers(WE) to Our Annual Gathering 2012

April 9, 2012

This is a shout out for the IEM. The Woman’s Engineers will be hosting a gathering on the 14th April, 2012. It’ll start at 9.30am and is worth 3 CPD hours.

Every second there are new and improved Growth, Innovation and Leaders emerging into the engineering profession and the industry. An important question Woman Engineers (WE) raise is how does woman engineers fit into this scenario? This question leads to other important questions as below:-

1. How are WE positioned?

2. How do WE cope with the fast moving and challenging profession?

3. Are WE contented with the comfort zone of our working environment?

4. How do WE continue to promote and motivate growth and innovation?

5. Are WE creating leaders of the profession?

It is thus, crucial for WE to progress and not to be left behind. WE have a significant role to play in the engineering society. Therefore, this special event serves as the platform for the woman engineers to be updated with the growth and innovation in the engineering profession; and to be exposed, motivated, and mentored to be leaders in the field. How do WE do this? WE bring in professional woman engineers, leaders in their respective fields to share, motivate and mentor the participants coming to this event in addressing the above issues.

Who should attend?

We invite all Women Engineers who are in practice, who would like to add more value in life, who wish to gain inspiration, who want to network with others, who want to contribute back to society. We also welcome WE’s friends to join us in this Day of Inspiration. Come and be inspired and inspiring US in our sharing session.

Support me by purchasing my recommendations, or buying through my Amazon store. I need the money to pay for running this site. Corporate level sponsors are encouraged.

If you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, no need to ask.

  • I’m looking for a senior process engineer, 7+ years experience. Send your cv here . Also looking for process safety persons, lead piping designer, lead instrument engineer, and other seniors you think will catch my eye.
  • PETRONAS has a one page ad. Send your cv here. State your applied discipline as subject/title of your application.

May I suggest that readers install the Waze app on their phones? And use it as much as possible? It says its a “a social mobile application providing free turn-by-turn navigation based on the live conditions of the road. 100% powered by users, the more you drive, the better it gets. Join the community of drivers in your area today!” It’s definitely getting better for the Klang Valley area, though we need more users from East Malaysia.

Support your local bookshop! Visit Bookalicious at The Summit Subang, good selection of imported books. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and otherologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Maybe I should say that next time I visit them. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

BTW, did I tell you that I am the Secretary of MOGEC?

Petronas To Award Additional Licenses To Develop Marginal Fields

April 8, 2012

Dateline 2012-04-02:

Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) will be awarding additional licences this year to develop marginal fields to bolster crude oil and gas production to further stimulate growth in the Oil, Gas and Energy sector.

The additional licenses would also support to maintain production at 650,000 barrels per day, the Performance Management & Delivery Unit (Pemandu) said in the Economic Transformation Programme Annual Report 2011 released today.

This move to develop small fields through innovative solutions is part of the entry point projects (EPPs) in the Oil, Gas and Energy (OGE) industry under the National Key Economic Areas (NKEA).

Having passed the Petroleum Income Tax Act last year to introduce new tax incentives for the oil and gas sector to unlock and monetise stranded O&G resources, the Act would be utilised to incentivise new players to enter the marginal field development segment, the report said.

Among licenses awarded in 2011 were risk service contracts to Sapura Kencana Petroleum Bhd and Petrofac Energy Developments Sdn Bhd.
