Election Time!

March 18, 2013

Yes, it’s time for the 2013 IEM Elections. Up for grabs are vacancies for the Vice Presidents positions (4 of them) for 2 sessions. Get your ballots in by the Friday, 5 April, 2013.

I think I’ll throw down my vote with those I see often at the BEM (those who are often there, but I don’t see, my apologies). Let the next 2 years theme be, “Symbios Govermentus (whomever it may be).”

In alphabetical order,

  • Ir. Gopal Narian Kutty
  • Ir. Mohd Aman Hj. Idris
  • Ir. PE Chong
  • Ir. Prof. Ishak Abdul Rahman

Sabah’s natural gas set to fuel growth of industries over next few decades

March 14, 2013

Any Sabahan companies want to team up with Synergy? We’re going to need to create a company in Sabah, to reap its assets? Or did I spell reap wrong?

Dateline 2013-03-07, by the Malaysian Insider:

Sabah, with over 12 trillion cu ft of gas reserves, is able to fuel the growth of various industries, including the larger ones, over a few decades, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai.

He said the active promotion of natural gas usage, a much cheaper and environmentally-friendlier alternative fuel, was in line with the government’s five-fuel policy, thus avoiding over-dependence on a single energy source.

“On average, a 1,000-megawatt (MW) gas-fired combine cycle power plant requires 1.1 trillion cu ft of gas over a period of 25 years.

“The total capacity of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd is 866.4 MW. You can work out the scale and magnitude of what the little reserves we have can do for us,” he said at a talk on “Alternative Energy Source — Compressed Natural Gas” here today.

Malaysian oil firm PETRONAS posts 14 per cent drop in 2012 profit, sees further headwinds

March 13, 2013

Obviously, PETRONAS is now associated with nautical terms now.

From the Times Colonist, 2013-03-07:

Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas said Thursday its profit fell 17 per cent last year, partly due to a shutdown of production in South Sudan, and warned of further headwinds.

Petronas said revenue rose by 1 per cent to 291 billion ringgit ($93.6 billion) but net profit slipped to 49.4 billion ringgit ($15.9 billion) in the financial year ended Dec 31.

It suffered a 45 per cent drop in profit for the last quarter of the year.

Petronas, which is Malaysia’s only Fortune 500 company and the country’s most profitable, attributed the lower profit to rising costs, loss of production in South Sudan and impairment of its Egypt investment.

IEM Shout Out – Full-Day HAZOP Training For Team Members – A Practical Approach

March 12, 2013

The Young Engineers  will be hosting a 1 day seminar on the 26th March, 2013. It is worth 6 CPD points, and held at Wisma IEM. Since I’m giving it, I expect hoards will have to be turned away at the gates.

A Hazard and Operability study is a formal and systematic and detailed examination of the process and engineering intentions of new or existing facilities which assesses the hazard potential and effects on the facility as a whole when operation is outside of the design envelope, or individual items of equipment malfunction.

This course is designed to educate participants in the HAZOP process from the perspective of a HAZOP team member. It is meant to provide both instruction and workshop sessions so that the participants:

  • Are familiar with the concept of ‘risk’
  • Are familiar with the theory behind HAZOP
  • Are familiar with the actual HAZOP workshop process
  • Have expectations as to what the HAZOP will (and won’t provide)
  • Understand what deliverables can be expected from a HAZOP
  • Have the opportunity to participate in HAZOP exercise in a safe environment
  • Opportunity to share HAZOP experiences

At the end of the session, the participants should:

  • Understand the responsibilities of all parties in the HAZOP
  • Have experience in a HAZOP session.
  • Understand the outcomes from a HAZOP session

Wata has 17 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, in both design and operations.

Malaysia’s Oil, Gas Worker Needs to Rise amid Ambitious Growth Plans

March 6, 2013

Workers, arise and join the Worldwide Brotherhood of Workers!

From Rigzone, dateline 2013-02-26:

Oil and gas production has been central to Malaysia’s growth ever since oil was first drilled in Sarawak at the start of the 20th century. Given Malaysia’s prolific hydrocarbon resources, it comes as no surprise to industry watchers that the government’s focus will continue to be placed on developing the country’s oil and gas sector moving towards 2020.

GLCs and PLCs

March 5, 2013

Most Malaysians are aware of the definition and commercial-political implications of a GLC. here are some independently compiled lists here, here, here and here.

However, I hypothesize there is such a thing as a PETRONAS linked company. (PLC). What would be the character of these mythological beasts? How about I start by saying one of the following must be present:

  1. The management or grand high poobahs must consist of high ranking ex-PETRONAS staff of  flag country vintage.
  2. Said management is in favour with current PETRONAS grand high poobahs.
  3. PLC may have a indirect, obfuscated,  commercial link with PETRONAS (this eliminates the companies listed in the lobby of Tower 1) or individual flag country staff mentioned above.
  4. Invitations to bid (ITB) will be fabricated such that the PLC capabilities stand out as the only possible candidate for the job.
  5. Missteps by the GLC will be attributed to RLC (rakyat linked companies) working for the GLC.
  6. Always part of PETRONAS mega projects.
  7. The hoi polloi, that is us grunts in trenches always wonder, how the heck did this company AlphaBetaGamma win his job?

Who do you think would meet the above criteria. Lekas-lekas, spew out your answers here.
