IEM Bulletin – Wata’s June 2012 Editorial

July 13, 2012

I wrote the editorial for this edition of the Bulletin. However, as I prone as I am to writing meandering, long-winded prose while injecting my version of British dry humour, the text got cut (or shall I say, shot) down.

Here’s the original meandering article, in all it’s glory. Read, then vote on which version is better.

Petronas approves floating LNG plant

July 3, 2012

Dateline 2012-06-05:

Petronas has approved plans to build a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant offshore Malaysia and aims to bring it online in 2015, which, if it were successful, would make it the first such plant in the world.

Petronas’ main competitor in the race to bring the first floating LNG plant online is oil major Royal Dutch Shell which approved its Prelude LNG floating plant last year and has said it intends to bring the plant online by 2017.

The floating LNG plant will allow Petronas to drill and ship gas from fields that were either too small or too remote to be profitable previously, CEO Shamsul Azhar Abbas said at a gas industry gathering in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

“This is an example where advancement of technology has made it economically feasible to monetise stranded gas in small and scattered conventional fields,” Shamsul said of the project.

Saturday Star 2012-06-23 – Job Opportunities

July 1, 2012

C’mon. Buy my recommendations, or through my Amazon store. I need the money to pay for my new camera. Where are those corporate sponsors? Or throw donations at me.

If you need my help to submit your CVs, donate to the blog, and I’ll review your CV to see if it is worthy of my (and my associates’) expectations. If you can’t figure out how to donate, no need to ask.

  • I’m looking for a senior process engineer, 7+ years experience. Send your cv here . Also looking for process safety persons, lead piping designer, lead instrument engineer, and other seniors you think will catch my eye.
  • And what, no adverts this week?

May I suggest that readers try Bluestacks? Run your Android apps on your Windows tablet, so you can buy that Win8 tablet (and buy me one) without worrying you won’t have anything to play on it!

Support your local bookshop!  Bookalicious at The Summit Subang is a good choice. I think they focus on trilogies, quadrilogies, and other ologies. Tell them I sent you, and enjoy the look of perplexity on their faces. Those of you who have dropped my name, thanks!

You need to improve your Excel massage skills if you want to be an engineer. Here are some words to help you along.

Shout Out – Talk on Onshore Pipeline Engineering And Mechanical Integrity

June 28, 2012

This is a shout out for the IEM. My Technical Division will be  hosting a talk on the 12th July, 2012. It’ll be at 5:30 pm  (makan-makan at 5:00). There is a lift at Wisma IEM.

Pipeline is the widely-used medium of transportation for liquid or gas from a supplier to its customer over a considerable distance. It is generally selected due to its reliability and cost benefits. There are various types of pipelines used and these are selected based on their specific intended requirements. The professionals involved in designing, operating and maintaining these pipelines are generally referred to Pipeline Engineers.

Pipeline Engineering requires multi-discipline engineering skills which involve many subject matters learned during an individual’s years in college. However, not many have the opportunity to apply the knowledge into Pipeline Engineering, especially applying the importance of mechanical stress-strain design, which is the essential item in pipeline system integrity.

The speaker will discuss several important considerations specifically for pipeline design. This includes the standards and guidelines, sizing, wall thickness selection and verification, material grade selection, buoyancy control. Several pipeline failure cases will also be shared to show the consequences when design integrity is compromised.

Ir. Mohd Nasahie Akbar Ali is a Manager for Pipeline Engineering Group at PETRONAS Gas Bhd.(PGB), a public-listed gas and utilities company that processes, transports and handles an estimated of 2200 mmscfd (million standard cubic feet per day) of gas for the power producers and other industries in Malaysia.

Register here or download the form here. A map to Wisma IEM is presented here.

  • SapuraKencana has a multi-page ad (half page here, 2 pages there, another page towards the arse end of the supplement). Send your cv here. They should pay more attention, I am getting an error message upon visiting their site “Bandwidth Limit Exceeded. The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.” Beats the 404 message, I guess.
  • MMC Oil & Gas Engineering Sdn Bhd is looking for people. Send your cv here. I happen to know they are not registered as a Engineering Consultancy Practice under every discipline they provide services for, yet they have a multi-disciplinary registration with PETRONAS. How does that work?
  • I see Petrofac is looking for engineers. They are ‘at the heart of oil & gas operations’. If you want to be in the left atrium,  send your cv here.
  • Hey hey, I see that Labuan Shipyard & Engineering are advertising.  Send your cv here, or snail mail at Human Resource Manager, Labuan Shipyard & Engineering Sdn. Bhd., km 9, Jalan Ranca-Ranca, P.O. Box 81210, 87031 Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia.
