A great diagram of a typical land drilling rig.  Notice the Topdrive on this rig.  For those of you who are just learning about drilling rigs, this is normally the best clue you can get that will tell you whether its a newer rig or not.  Older drilling rigs will use a rotary table and Kelly to drill/ turn the drillpipe.

Oil Rig 101

It is common to see natural gas being flared off, so common that its done in just about every major oilfield in the country.  This is done for a few reasons.  The first and most common of which is because the gas is just not worth enough to sell, and renting a flaring unit to burn off these energy rich carbons is less expensive than trying to sell it.  Justifying this wasteful practice is tough, but without the pipelines and infrastructure to move the gas to market, drilling rigs haven’t had much choice.

Taking advantage of the normally ‘flared’ gas is catching on as diesel maintains record price levels.   After a quick but costly conversion of your diesel engines, a rig can easily and affordably run on a mixture of diesel and natural gas.

“By running the bi-fuel system on the diesel engines and also converting their boiler to…
